GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Happy 2021! We are looking forward to a wonderful year here at The Peninsula Yacht Club. My team and I hope this January's issue of The Watch finds you healthy and safe. We will be painting the outside of the clubhouse in January, weather permitting. Our painting contractors are also slated to paint the main floor inside the clubhouse, as well. We hope to be finished with the renovation of the Members bathrooms in January. A big thank you to Daniel, our Facilities Manager. He ran into unexpected situations while renovating and handled everything with a smile and tenacity. In motion for 2021, Safe Harbor is adding security cameras around the property and on each dock. They are also adding new WIFI on the docks as well. We are planning to resume our Beacon Team that welcomes new members by inviting them to brunch at the Club. We will continue our Brunch service with team members serving our members. If you would like to be on the Beacon team, please reach out to Clair Knox at Cknox@peninsulayacht.com. We will continue our social distancing and all of our sanitizing practices as well. Thank you for continuing to wear your mask! We still have our member referral program in place. If you bring a new Social member to the club, you will receive a credit of $250 on your account. If you bring in a new Yacht member, you receive a credit of $500 on your account. This year we are adding a sundown cruise on the Nopkehee. You and the new members that you recommended to the PYC, will enjoy a complimentary Wine-Down Cruise on the Nopkehee, our beautiful flagship vessel. We look forward to all of the PYC events that we have on the schedule for the year. We have added some fun events that we know you will enjoy! Please make sure you are getting our weekly Happenings at The Club emails to make sure you are in the know! Welcome Mr. Jim Hill as our new 2022 Commodore! CHEF'S CORNER
Carolina Crab Soup This has been a favorite of PYC members since 1996. Great on a cold day with oyster crackers! Serves 6-10 people Ingredients: 1 quart carrots, finely diced 1 quart celery, finely diced 1 ½ quart yellow onion, finely diced 1 ½ lb unsalted sutter 3 cups flour 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 tbsp dried thyme 1 ½ tbsp old bay seasoning 1 tsp curry 4 quart clam juice 3 oz. crab base 2 quart heavy cream ½ cup sherry wine 1 lb lump crab meat Directions: 1. In a large pot combine heavy cream, clam juice and crab base. Heat on medium to warm it, but do not boil! 2. In another large pot, melt butter. Once butter is melted, add vegetables and simmer until tender. 3. Add spices, then add flour and cook all together for 10 or 15 minutes. 4. Slowly add the cream mix to flour and vegetable mix, stir constantly until all liquid is incorporated. 5. Let simmer and stir frequently, aound 15 minutes. 6. Add sherry and crab meat stir and serve or chill in ice bath for use later. Bon Appétit!

Eight Themed Tastings
Themed education provided by wine experts with five or six different types of wines and served with a tapas cheese plate.
Four Paired Dinners
We will have five wines paired with “small plates” of food along with education from wine experts. The meal and education will occur at the same time.
Two Grand Tastings
“Stock your Cellar” and “Sip and Shop” features four to five wine experts to assist you with wine purchases at heavily discounted prices. Heavy Hor d’oeuvres will be served.
Wine Dinner
For a special night out, we will serve four or five high-end wines that are paired with our Chef's premier dinner. There will be representatives from the wineries presenting for this themed dinner.

Marina Emergency Procedures During Cold Weather Conditions As important as it is to routinely check on your boat in the off season its more important, as you venture out, to remember a couple of these very important safety tips. 1. In an emergency call 911! 2. CO Poisoning a. Do not forget about this silent killer! b. Know the signs of CO Poisoning... • The most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, and nausea. • Other symptoms include: fatigue, impulsiveness, flu-like symptoms, confusion, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, weakness, palpitations, shortness of breath, agitation, drowsiness, hallucinations, visual disturbances. c. Make sure when running your vessel’s engines or generator that you are in a very well-ventilated area. Covers and enclosures can prevent these deadly gases from escaping properly! 3. Ice/snow a. Although very rare, if ice and/or snow are present, make sure to watch your step and proceed with caution. b. Gangways, board walk, and docks can be very slippery. c. When boarding the boat be careful, swim platforms can also be very slippery! 4. Do not venture out alone a. Always try and go with someone and/or let someone know where you are going and when you should return. 5. Falling in the water a. When around the water you should always wear a PFD. b. Throw rings and Safety bags are located on the middle of each dock and contain a throw rope and portable swim ladder. c. Know your surroundings and always have a plan if you were to fall in. Most boats in the marina have swim ladders off the back. Know the area and proceed to the closest boat. d. Remember… Reach, Throw, Row but never go in the water after someone! Do not become a victim yourself. Please let your marina team know if we can be of assistance, we are here to help!

THE SAILING SCENE Happy New Year! With the Lighted Boat Parade and the Holidays behind us, welcome to the New Year – 2021! We are hopeful that 2021 brings us back to a state of normalcy and all are safe and well. The Sail Fleet has already posted our 2021 event calendar – and it is a busy one filled with opportunities for all – check it out. We start the year with the continuation of our Social Sail program (January 16 open to both sail and power) and enter February kicking off our educational programs which include Introduction to Racing. Throughout the year we will also be offering Introduction to Sailing, Sailing Basics and Introduction to Race Committee. Please register for the events via the Club flyers and join us for these fantastic opportunities to get boats out of their slips and sailors on the water! January sailing on Lake Norman is truly amazing with the clear sky and brisk breeze. I hope to see you all out there! To fair winds and following seas,

COMMODORE'S COMMENTS As we head into 2021, the 25th year of the Peninsula Yacht Club, I am honored to represent the membership of PYC and the Fleet Committee through all of its activities, including sailing, power boating, charitable donations, social activities, community outreach and boating education and safety. Under the leadership of Commodore Vince Watkins, and despite the pandemic, the infamous year 2020 was a good year. In the winter months, before the pandemic hit, we had a great Commodores’ Ball and two of the three planned events of the J-88 Winter Series. Later in the year we conducted a safe Poker Run and Silent Auction, which allowed us to make substantial donations to our charities, with thanks to our members for their generous contributions. With cooperation from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Calvin Newman Fund, we held the first of many PWC Youth Safety seminars. The Peninsula Cup Regatta and the Fall Fellowship Race Series were also successes with even greater participation than in the previous year. We appreciate that enthusiasm and participation and especially, the attention to distancing and safety while enjoying good racing and boating. I optimistically look forward to everyone receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and a return to more ‘normal’ activity in 2021. But the new normal might be a little different from the old normal. Work environments may be different, and it may take a while before we can realize a safe level of normal activity. In that regard, we have rescheduled the Commodores’ Ball for late March and the Poker Run/Treasure Hunt/ Silent Auction for Labor Day weekend. As a fleet committee, we want to encourage members to use their boats and enjoy our beautiful Lake Norman and have planned a number of activities to facilitate that. The fleet committee’s focus for 2021 will include increased emphasis on education and safety and learnto-sail/learn-to-race training. There is also a social sail for both power and sail boats scheduled every month of 2021 as well as the popular Raft-Ups during the warm weather months. Keep an eye on “The Watch” for more details about boating education and other activities for the membership. It will be wonderful to spend time with each other again when we are able.
