GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Happy New Year 2022! We look forward to a wonderful year at the SHPYC! We appreciate each of our members and we look forward to seeing you at the club with the many events that we have to offer. The outside pool bathroom renovation will be finished in February barring any unforeseen circumstances. It will be a great addition to all the other fabulous things that SHM is doing for the club. You may have noticed the new shades on the back veranda. While dining on the inside you will still be able to see the million dollar view while the sun goes down. We have new fans being installed on the back veranda as well. Gangways are still continuing to be repaired and our decking below will be finished very soon. We have so many opportunities to come to the club this month. Here are some you may enjoy: Italian Night in the dining room, Kids Lego and Movie Night, Champagne & Paint Class, and Dueling Pianos. The Commodore's Ball is Feb. 19th 2022. Please don’t forget to make your reservations. It is always a fabulous soirée. Our new commodore is Gary Treen. CHEF'S CORNER
Beer Cheese Soup Serves 8 people
This time of year, with the cool weather, this is one of my favorite soups to make with my family at home.
INGREDIENTS • 2 lbs diced smoked bacon • 4 celery ribs, diced • 4 small onions, chopped • 8 garlic cloves, sliced • 4 jalepenos, chopped • 4 tsp fresh thyme • 48 oz. beer • 9 cups chicken stock • 4 cups heavy cream • 2 lbs shredded cheddar cheese • 1 lb shredded smoked gouda cheese • salt & black pepper to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Render bacon until crisp and transfer to a bowl and set aside. Do not clean pan. 2. Add celery, onion, jalapeno, garlic and thyme in the same pan you cooked the bacon in. Cook over moderate heat until vegetables are soft and onions are translucent. 3. Add half of beer (24 oz) to deglaze pan and let reduce by half. 4. Add chicken stock and bring to simmer. 5. Add cream and remaining beer. Bring to simmer. 6. Melt cheese into soup, a handful at a time. 7. Let cool for about 5 minutes and then purée soup in a blender. 8. Taste and adjust seasoning; thin with more stock if needed.

Bow-Front of a vessel Cleat-Metal fitting on which a rope can be fastened Gunwale-Upper edge of vessel’s side (generally pronounced "gunnel") Hull-Body of a vessel Port-Left side of a vessel Propeller-Rotates and powers a boat forward or backward Starboard-Right side of a vessel Stern-Rear of a vessel Marina Manager Reminder During these colder months please proceed with caution when on the docks. The water is much colder and, although rare, there could be the potential for ice or snow on the docks that could make things very slippery. Remember to check your boat! COMMODORE COMMENTS

Happy New Year! I hope this Watch article finds you well as we continue in these complex, yet very hopeful times as the world continues to round the bend on an unprecedented two years. I am very honored and what a privilege it is to serve as the 2022 Commodore. As I reflect on 2021, under the leadership of Commodore Jim Hill, we had a very successful year holding exciting member events and a couple of new events too while we continued to work out of the pandemic. In March, we had a wonderful Commodore’s Ball. What a safe and fun event. The Sailing Fleet kicked off the year with the Icicle Series and held the Spring and Fall Fellowship Series throughout the year and had a very successful Peninsula Cup Regatta this past October. This past year the Power Fleet held several events including the popular raft-ups, spring and fall Lakewide History Tours, Lake Scavenger Hunt, and a very successful Poker Run. On the Poker Run weekend we had another great and prosperous Silent Auction for the three charities raising $15,700 for Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville and the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. We also added a couple of new events, what an awesome time we had with our first Progressive Dock Party and the inaugural Family Treasure Hunt held in October. We continued to see great growth and participation within the Calvin Newman Youth and Safety seminars. These seminars are important to educate our youth in safe boating. Looking forward, I am encouraged that we will continue to work through the pandemic challenges and we will continue to do our best holding safe and fun events in 2022 for our membership. One of my favorite events over the years and a premier event at the club is the annual Commodore’s Ball. We have the Commodore’s Ball Scheduled for February 19th with the theme, “An Evening Around the Globe.” This event honors the outgoing Commodore and introduces the new Commodore and Fleet Committee members. This promises to be an exquisite dinner put on with the best chief and staff followed by dancing around the globe. A great event to meet members, have some laughs and build lasting friendships and memories. Your 2022 Fleet Committee has already been working hard to enhance the member experience on planning 2022 events working with the PYC leadership of Kathee Dishner and Jeff Barry. I am very excited where we are in the planning phase and there is no question 2022 promises to be a fun and exciting year for our members with safety always at the forefront for our members. My goals in 2022 are to build on partnerships, have open and clear communications and have total transparency working across the Fleet committee and the Club management to bring you the best and fun events throughout the year. Let me share some highlights of the twenty plus events in the planning phase. I am happy to let you know the weather and lake will be cold for the Polar Plunge being held on February 5th. This was an awesome event last year raising donations for the Special Olympics. Let’s challenge ourselves to raise donations for this great cause, so make your plans to do the Polar Plunge for this special cause. On the Sailing Fleet side, the Icicle Series starts in January followed by the Spring Fellowship Series in April. The sailing signature event Peninsula Cup Regatta will be held on October 14th through the 16th. This promises to be an exciting regatta and the 30th Peninsula Cup Regatta. With the kick-off of spring, the very crowd-pleasing Car Show will be back with plans to include a Wooden Boat show on April 23rd. There are plans for this to be a bigger event than last year. On the Power Fleet side, we kick off in April with the Spring Lake Tour and the third Scavenger Hunt. The very popular raft-ups will hold its first of four raft-ups on May 14th which is always a great way to meet members. Our first of two Progressive Dock Parties will be held on May 21st. The Power Fleet signature event and our 24th Poker Run will be held June 18th. We are bringing the Poker Run back on Father’s Day Weekend. The weekend consists of the entertaining Dueling Pianos on that Friday and the Silent Auction for our three charities. The Annual Silent Auction is successful due to the generous donations of the community and the membership. The charitable organizations are so thankful for what the PYC membership has been able to do to help these much deserved organizations over the years. The second and well received fun-filled Family Treasure Hunt will be held on October 22nd , remember to watch out for pirates. These are just a few of the twenty plus events planned this year encouraging you to participate and get out on our beautiful lake. We continue our focus and emphasis on boating education and safety. With the cooperation of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and Calvin Newman Fund we will hold our first of many PYC Youth Safety seminar on April 2nd. If you have suggestions for other activities or want to get more involved in club events please attend the Social Committee meetings. This is also a great way to meet other members. All these events promise to be exciting Lake events for the entire family, so please keep an eye on “The Watch” for more details throughout the year to mark your calendar for some fun events on the Lake for you and your family to enjoy. I hope you and your families are safe and healthy in these challenging times as we realize how much we truly have to be grateful for. I hope you will join us on Feb 19th for the Commodore’s Ball and meet the 2022 Fleet Committee with this wonderful event “An Evening Around The Globe.”
