GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members,
The Summer Camp brochure is out and sign up is available now. We look forward to enjoying your children at the many camps we offer. This year, our wakeboard and wake surf camps will be led by Tyler Rhyne. These camps will go fast as Tyler has a great reputation on Lake Norman. Our boating camp will include sailing as well. The Pool bathrooms are almost finished. For our newer members, just a reminder, there are showers in these bathrooms for use by the members after a day of boating, pool use or sailing. Our Valentine's Dinner will prove to be another delicious event and each couple will go home with a lovely gift of a chocolate covered bottle of wine. Last year, we were so busy we had members dining in the library! Our Commodore's Ball is scheduled for March 19th. Please don't forget to make your reservations. The theme is an "Evening Around the Globe". Mr. and Mrs. Gary Treen have chosen a Surf & Turf Entree for the menu of the evening. There will be a Dj as well. Spring is just around the corner and we are looking forward to a great season at the SHPYC! The Marina water will be turned on in March. Please call the Ship Store if you need any assistance from Harry and his dockhands. They are always happy to assist you. Chef Andres and his team have created a new menu for your enjoyment. We should have drawings of the new pool grill and bar very soon. This will be a wonderful addition to the club. Please remember to register for all of the events you want to participate in. CHEF'S CORNER
Pisto
A Spanish Vegetable Stew
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •
4 ripe tomatoes 1 onion 1 green pepper 1 red pepper 1 zucchini 3 garlic cloves 4 tablespoons of Spanish extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons of cumin powder 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional) Canned tomato or tomato sauce (optional) Ground pepper Salt
How to make pisto:
1. In a wide pan or a casserole, add the EVOO from Spain and heat at medium. 2. Chop the onion, the garlic and the green and red peppers, add them to the pan with a pinch of salt and some ground pepper. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions start to look golden. 3. Then, wash the zucchini –it is not necessary to peel it, just get rid of the ends- and chop it in small cubes. Add it to the pan and sauté for 3-4 minutes. 4. Rinse the tomatoes, get rid of the core and cut them in cubes. Add them to the pan, along with some more salt, ground pepper and cumin powder. 5. Lower the heat a little bit and let it all simmer for about 10 minutes. 6. At this point, try the Spanish stew and, if it tastes too sour for your liking, add a teaspoon of sugar to sweeten it up a bit. You can also add some canned tomato at this step if you see the stew is too thick and dry, letting it cook for a few more minutes. Or you can make tomato sauce yourself instead, and add it.

BOATING & MARINA NEWS Dock Power Please remember that all power on the dock is metered and belongs to the corresponding slip. Individuals rely heavily on this power to keep batteries charged, bilge heaters powered, heat/AC running, etc. So please be observant and courteous to your neighbor when using the power on the pedestals by using your own power source. Remember when using power cords on the docks to make sure NO electrical tape or repairs are made! All repairs must be done by a licensed electrician or simply replace the cord. 15/20 amp cords must be for outdoor use and must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter or GFCI. These GFCI’s can be found in the ship’s store. Lastly, Cords don’t last forever so replace and/or inspect regularly. (Always make sure the power is off before inspecting any electrical cord)
If you have any issues, please let your marina team know. Marina Manager Reminder Please remember to always put eyes on your boat during the off season. With all the wet weather and freezing temps recently, it pays to be observant. It doesn’t take much for something to happen that could be preventable. Please remember to only use ABYC approved heating sources and do not use lightbulbs.

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS WOW . . . It’s amazing to see the incredible start to 2022! Our SHPYC events are up and running . . . boating, sailing, and even plunging, as we get off to a great start in 2022. This year promises to be action-packed and fun for all. Take a look at the wonderful events that are planned in the coming weeks/months and join the excitement, camaraderie, and fun at PYC! Let’s make 2022 our best year ever! PYC Polar Plunge [2-5-22]. It’s a “chilling” event and supports a wonderful cause . . . raising donations for the Special Olympics. Please come out and join us for this year’s
Polar Plunge! Sail Fleet Events - SHPYC sailing events kicked off New Year’s Day and continues with some great events in early 2022. Let’s go sailing! LNYC Ice Bucket Regatta [1-1-22]. SHPYC was represented and competed with J/88 sailboats/team’s Alchemy and Spray in this exciting “pursuit” racing format. Results: https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/23599 LNKC Icicle Series [1/15, 1/22, 1/29 w/awards 2/12]. SHPYC is hosting this year’s Icicle Series. The 2022 LNKC Icicle Series is a Lakewide PHRF sailing competition held in benefit of the Lake Norman Keelboat Council that promotes and supports sailing on Lake Norman. This fun series of 5 Sunday afternoon races in April/May is for all levels of sailors and vessels, whether you are a competitive racer, a novice racer or just want to sail around Lake Norman with your peers. This event honors our outgoing Commodore [Jim Hill] and introduces our incoming Commodore [Gary Treen], as well as our 2022 Fleet Committee members. Please plan to join us for an exquisite dinner, music, ceremony, and fun! Fleet Volunteer Appreciation Reception [3-24-22]. We absolutely could NOT plan & execute our SHPYC Fleet events without the incredible contributions of our volunteers at SHPYC. 2021 Fleet volunteers . . . the Fleet Committee cordially invites you to join us to honor and THANK YOU for helping make our Fleet events a huge success in 2021. Safety & Education - Boating education and safety continues to be a priority in 2022. We have many valuable events planned this year including the CNF Youth PWC Safety Seminars scheduled for 4/2, 6/25, and 10/1. Be on the lookout for some GREAT Safety & Education activities in 2022. Fleet Awards - We have a number of annual Fleet Awards that recognize SHPYC membership and their contributions to our club. These awards are presented as merited each year at our annual Commodore’s Ball. Power Boater of the Year – Recognizes individuals from SHPYC membership for their participation in SHPYC events/activities and extends beyond powerboat events to include areas like volunteering in key club efforts and participation in SHPYC education & safety activities. Sailing Yachtsman of the Year [YOTY] – Mission of the Yachtsman Award is “to recognize an individual from the SHPYC membership who has embraced and promoted the spirit of sailing and has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of sailing at SHPYC”. David Goodman Spirit Award – Honors Honorary Commodore David M. Goodman. The David Goodman Spirit Award” is awarded as merited to one who exhibits the extraordinary attributes that exemplified David Goodman. Attributes included . . . love/support for SHPYC, focus & passion for boating education & safety, and an unparalleled personality, charisma, enthusiasm, and joy for everything he did and everyone he touched. We have some incredible events planned for 2022 at the club so please be on the lookout for details and scheduling in the Watch and weekly SHPYC Happenings email.
