Closed For The Season

Since we moved south 12 years ago, I have a different view of the month of February. Instead of “OMG, worst month of the year! Relentless snow and bitter cold!”, I now view it as “Hey, it’s February! By month’s end I’ll be back in shorts and on the water!”

Yes, February is a transition month down here in the south, one that lends itself to thinking about boating activity. Thoughts like, shall I buy a new boat this year or join the club’s cool new Boat Club? Or give our current boat a fresh coat of varnish, or at least a good scrub to remove the lingering spider webs? Perhaps swing by the club’s Ships Store for the latest in boating fashions?

And for our sailors, to paraphrase an old saying, “ a young sailor’s thoughts turn to ” a new set of sails? An early spring cruise? Helping interested club members learn to sail? Taking part in an early race on the lake? We have a new Sail Fleet Committee this year (Colleen Keegan and Colleen Lloyd-Roberts) and several club members who are on the Lake Norman Keelboat Council. They all have the pulse of the sailing activities for the year and can steer you in the right direction. Email me at wesbray74@gmail.com, and I’ll connect you.

Meanwhile, the club has packed February with lots of fun activities to help us bridge to the warmer weather.

See you around the club!

February Forecast: More Wind, More Sails, More You!

Hello Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club friends February is here, and while the water may still have that “brisk and sparkly” vibe, the sailing season is closer than it looks

We’re Colleen Lloyd-Roberts and Colleen Maruster, and as your Sailing Fleet leads this year, we ’ re keeping the same mission front and center: more boats on the water, more people involved, and more fun doing it.

Think of February as the pre-season tune-up month the perfect time to go from “someday” to “this year. ” If your boat has been sitting long enough to collect a few avian blessings, consider this your friendly nudge: a quick rinse, a little TLC, and a check of lines and sails now will make spring launching feel effortless (and slightly heroic).

No boat? No problem. You don’t need to own a sailboat to be part of the Sailing Fleet. You can show up, learn, crew or just sit back and enjoy the ride.

And yes our Women in Sailing idea is still on deck. If that sparks your interest, you ’ re exactly who we want! Email us today, “I’m interested in sailing,” colleenlloydroberts@gmail.com Stay in the know. We’re planning our first Women in Sailing Get Together and our very first events!

Let’s use February to get ready so when the wind shows up, so do we. Colleen + Colleen

Some of these events also support local charities by raising funds. The Social Scene offers a fun and easy way to get involved with both the club and the Fleet Committee.
