GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Happiest of Holidays! We are excited about being back in the dining room serving you, our members! We have so many events for you to enjoy this month. December 3rd is our Members Only Holiday Party with complimentary food stations, as well as complimentary beer and wine. Please make your reservations to come to the club and enjoy this festive time. This event will also have Children’s gingerbread decorating and the lighting of our SHPYC Christmas tree. Santa Brunch will be December 5th and is always a wonderful time for our members. We look forward to seeing you then. Chef Andres is bringing back another one of his popular Tapas Nights, we have cork Wreath Making with Katherine, Lighted Boat Parade, Pasta Night and the Holiday Wine Dinner. We will not be charging December Social dues as a way of giving back to all of our members for being patient and understanding while the renovations were going on in the upstairs of the clubhouse. The Ship's Store has some exceptional items that would make great Holiday gifts for friends and family. Harry and the Dockhands are here to take care of your boating and sailing needs. Please mark your calendar for our ever popular New Year's Eve party on the 31st. It will be a great time to celebrate. CHEF'S CORNER

Traditional Holiday Dish in the Saborido's House on Christmas Eve Serving for 6 Ingredients •1/4 cup of mushrooms •1/4 cup of peeled prawns •2 heads of peeled garlic •4oz of diced serrano ham •1 oz cayenne pepper •2 cups of oil •1/2 cup white wine •3 cloves garlic, sliced •1 bay leaf •Salt and Pepper ________________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mince garlic and fry in the oil with the cayenne pepper. Set Aside. 2. Fry the mushrooms over medium heat, and the ham cubes. 3. After 10 minutes, add the wine and the reserved fried garlic for about 10 minutes (it remains almost in the oil). 4. Finally, add the peeled prawns, cover for 30 seconds while boiling, and remove from the heat, leaving covered for a minute. RECOMMENDATIONS: Ideally, this dish should be made in a clay pot. To enjoy this dish, you must have a good loaf of bread on hand, And of course a great beer on tap!

BOATING & MARINA NEWS PYC Marina Dock Safety This time of year, the lake water has already started to cool off considerably. If you fall in the water, it doesn’t take long for hypothermia to set in. While on the docks, remember to always wear a PFD and always try not to be alone. If you do happen to fall in the water a PFD can literally mean the difference between life or death. Each dock is equipped with a throw ring, safety box containing a collapsible ladder, throw bag and emergency contact list. Hypothermia Symptoms Causes • The most common causes are cold water and cold weather This exposure to cold can be caused by: • Not wearing clothes that are warm enough • Staying in the cold for too long • Falling into cold water by accident Risk factors that increase the chances of getting hypothermia include: • Age – the elderly and children are more likely to get hypothermic • Alcohol – causes vasodilatation and heat loss • Medications – antidepressants, antipsychotics affect the body’s ability to regulate temperatures • Overexertion – the tolerance for cold diminishes when one is tired

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS

Your 2021 Fleet Committee would like to extend our best wishes to all of the SHPYC Membership for a wonderful Holiday Season. We hope everyone was able to participate in some of the great events that were organized throughout the year. Among these twenty-five or so events, there were many stand outs including the Raft Ups, Poker Run, Lake History Tours, Fellowship Sailing Series, Pen Cup and Treasure Hunt. The PYC Fleet Committee was gratified for your support, flexibility and proud to have been able to sponsor a robust recovery from 2020. We are both optimistic and excited to enter 2022 on a high note and would welcome your participation. The October Peninsula Cup Regatta was a great collaborative success and illustrated the flexibility that was needed for all the Club activities this year. Despite the closure of the main floor of the Club, almost all events were held outside which actually helped to encourage renewal of friendships and creation of new ones. We were fortunate to have great weather and good winds for racing. 21 yachts came to the line for racing among 24 registered. The Fleet Committee, in partnership with PYC, hosted the club’s inaugural PYC Family Treasure Hunt on Saturday, October 23. This fun-filled family event was a huge success with pirates everywhere at PYC . . . on the grounds with maps to waypoints and on the water with excursions to Outrigger Island for “very” lively skirmishes with the pirate ship in an effort to recover stolen treasure taken from PYC. It was incredible fun for everyone! Special thanks are extended to the PYC Treasure Hunt Committee led by Janet Hosler and Colleen Slocum and a host of GREAT volunteers [almost 40] from PYC membership and PYC staff . . . THANKS! It was an incredible

partnership! Be on the lookout for pirates next year and mark your calendar for the 2nd annual PYC Treasure Hunt Saturday, October 22. Arg mateys! During this charitable season, we would like to thank and recognize the PYC Fleet Committee, the Calvin Newman Fund (CNF), and SHPYC for their focus and contributions to PYC Education & Safety in 2021. Special thanks go to Michael Hauser (Fleet Education & Safety Chair) for his tireless promotion of the CNF and PYC boating safety programs.
