GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members,

We are happy to announce that our new fuel dispensers are in at the gas dock. Harry and his team are thrilled to have these digital fuel dispensers as they have never been replaced before. We hope that you all find them easier to use. Please remember to depart your boat while fueling up. We care about our member's safety and it is a priority here at the SHPYC. The pool bar and grill is on target and is looking great. If you have a chance, we have screened window areas to look in and see the progress. We think this will be a great place for our members to gather and enjoy as they come off their boats or are at the pool enjoying swiming and sunshine. Thank you for your patience regarding the new back decking. It is now finished for your enjoyment. Next up is the new awning that will go in the front of the club. August showed up this year very hot right out of the gate. Thunderstorms were plenty but it didn’t keep you, our members, away from the club. Thank you for spending time at your club. Trivia in the bar is back on the 11th. If you like trivia then this event is for you! The Fleet Committee Raft Up is on the 13th and last month there were over 60 people registered to enjoy a great time on the lake. No boat, no problem; the club will shuttle you to the raft up. Our member mixer is August 19th and we see a lot of new members coming to meet our existing members and forming friendships! The docking challenge is back on August 20th. It was a fun event last year and the proceeds go to the SHPYC’s charity of choice, the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Education Fund. The NOP has been varnished and we have new seat cushions. The wine down cruises are back and it is a lovely way to end the evening on Lake Norman. The ever popular Progressive Dock party will be in September on the 17th, so mark your calendars. We look forward to seeing you then. We are wrapping up kids' camp this month and the camp counselors had a fabulous time. We hope that your kids share the same sentiment. CHEF'S CORNER

Crema Catalana Serves: 6-8 2 TBSP cornstarch 2½ cups whole milk A big slice of peel from both a lemon and an orange (note: not the zest, but rather big slices of the peel) 1 cinnamon stick 5 large egg yolks ½ cup superfine sugar (if you can't find superfine, don't worry, it'll just be a bit grainy) Additional sugar to caramelize on top Fresh fruit (like figs, raspberries or strawberries) to top INSTRUCTIONS

1. Put the milk on the stove in a small saucepan, along with the citrus peels and the cinnamon stick. Slowly bring to a boil. 2. Dissolve the cornstarch in a splash of water and set aside. 3. While the milk is slowly heating, beat the egg yolks with the sugar, until the mixture turns pale yellow. Beat in the dissolved cornstarch and a spoonful of the hot milk. 4. Remove the citrus peels and cinnamon stick from the hot milk, and lower the heat. 5. Slowly add the egg yolk mixture to the milk, making sure to keep stirring so that the eggs don't scramble! 6. Stir constantly over a low heat, until the mixture thickens. 7. Remove from the heat and pour the mixture into traditional clay dishes or ramekins. 8. Allow the custard to cool, and then cover in plastic wrap and chill the crema catalanas for about four hours (preferably overnight). 9. Before serving, I like to let mine come to room temperature (unless it's summer-- that would be too hot!). Then sprinkle a thin layer of sugar on top of each ramekin. Spread the sugar out by tilting the ramekins in all directions. 10. Caramelize with a small kitchen blowtorch (though the truly authentic crema catalanas are made with a hot iron). 11. Top with fresh fruit (optional). Bon Appétit

BOATING & MARINA NEWS Fire Safety You can never be too cautious when it comes to marina/fire safety. Just a few things to remember to help maintain a safe marina… 1. Follow proper vessel fueling rules. 2. Make sure your vessel has all required safety equipment. 3. Do not attach anything to the dock fire standpipe system. 4. Adequately maintain your vessel. Keep all systems in working order. 5. Routinely inspect power cords (Be sure and cut power before inspecting). 6. If you notice something unsafe, please notify your marina team as soon as possible! We can all do our part to ensure we have a safe and fun marina. Marina Manager Reminder Come in as fast as you want to crash! When approaching the dock, or any other structure, approach with caution and at a controlled speed. Never try to dock during thunderstorms. If you cannot make it in before the storm, wait it out or come to an endcap if it can be done safely. Harry Smith Marina Manager

The Ed Sherrard Memorial Power Boater of the Year Award was established several years ago by the SHPYC to encourage participation in the broad range of events hosted by the club and Fleet Committee. Ed was an active member of the club and enjoyed supporting his fellow boaters in maximizing their enjoyment of our beautiful lake. Points are awarded for a wide range of boating club activities and extend beyond powerboat events to earn points. Earn points for Raft-Ups, Lake wide History Tours, Poker Run, many other boating events, along with volunteer participation in key club efforts as well as completion of the educational and safety seminars that keep our members safe. We have our next event on August 13th, our 3rd raftup so please come out and enjoy the fun and earn points for Boater of the Year.

Recently we have had some questions regarding our 48-hour cancellation policy and why online registration is only available 48 hours before the event. It is at the 48-hour mark that the Club makes its decisions regarding food preparation and staffing needs. After online registration is closed, you can still call the club to see if space is still available as we always buffer our count of total registrations by 5-10% depending on the event. It is for the same reason that we have a 48-hour cancellation policy. We have procured and started to prepare food, and other items needed for each event based on the number of reservations. If we can replace your cancelled reservation, you will not be charged. We hope you find this information helpful, and as always, if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS I am often asked “what does the Purser do?” I am responsible for securing our sponsors for the events that are sponsored by the Fleet Committee. While we partner with SHPYC, we use separate pool of money for our events. Sponsors offset this expense. Who are our Sponsors? ANYONE who owns a business, member or non-member can be a sponsor. Some of our sponsorships come from members who just want to send “well wishes” for a specific event-no business required! There are lots of perks & recognition, so let me know if you would like to learn more! I have been honored to pray the “Blessing of the Boats” at our Annual Fleet Commissioning Ceremony since 2019. This year, I was asked by many if the prayer could be published in the newsletter. I hope it is a blessing to all who read it. I look forward to seeing you around the club. Please come & say hello! Prayer of Blessing 2022 Heavenly Father, we are grateful for this day and this beautiful lake. We ask for your blessings to be upon all the boats-power and sail and all who steer them. Cover every boat from the bow to the stern that all necessary equipment function as it was designed to be used. Grant wisdom to every captain that they take this privilege seriously. Give us a clear mind to make responsible decisions and keep us safe when we go out into the deep. God, help us to respect the water and each other whether in a boat, personal watercraft, or swimming. As the number of vessels on the water greatly increases, give us the discipline to learn and follow the rules of boater safety. May the seasoned boater kindly assist the novice without judgement. May the novice graciously accept guidance without attitude. May we avoid preventable incidents so we can have peace on the water this season. We ask for your blessings over the Fleet Committee (past and present, in person and in spirit) as we partner with management to safely host events to keep us anchored. Bless our efforts to provide pleasurable events for members and may we exceed our goals to raise funds for our deserving charities. Loving God, we give thanks for all those who work on this lake and ask that you bless them for their tireless efforts to keep us all safe while enjoying the activities that unite us. We pray for those who work on the docks, who serve us with a smile. Continue to bless their work, and machinery, that boating might be a safe activity for us all to enjoy. We ask that you bless ALL first responders on land and lake as they fulfill their duties and face the dangers of their calling. Lastly, as we enjoy this season of freedom, let us not forget the lessons we have learned. Masks on or off, Republican, Democrat or Independent, socially distanced or not, wealthy or working class - let RESPECT & KINDNESS be our guide. There is more that unites us than divides us. It is with that unity in our hearts that we ask you to grant us incredible sunrises and colorful sunsets, mysterious cloud formations, good winds for those who need it, and when we are on the waters at night, more stars than we can count.
