GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members,
We are very excited that April is here at the SHPYC for many reasons! We are now in our in-season hours so we will be serving dinner on Wednesday and Sunday nights, as well as, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday nights, we have a Burger Night with a limited menu. We have a vegetarian burger among other delicious burger options. We call Sunday nights, “Casual Sunday.” If you don’t want to cook, we continue to have our “to-go” program. We can deliver meals to your boat slip and we also have curbside pick up. The phone number for to-go’s is 704-999-2235. We have emailed the Marina Services to all of our yacht members. Please call the Ship’s Store for assistance. It will be our pleasure to assist you. The pool/bar/bathroom building should begin in April! I know that you all will enjoy this upgrade and we look forward to this new addition. Our Kids Camp program is just around the corner. If you haven’t signed up but want to, please email info@peninsulayacht.com We have both toddler and day camps. Each camp has a theme and the camps sell out quickly. We look forward to having your children with us during the summer. Easter Brunch is April 17th and our famous Bunny Brunch is the day before on Saturday, April 16th. Have your children bring baskets to collect their eggs in the Easter egg hunt. If you don’t have a boat, ‘no worries’, we have two rental pontoons, a Catalina 22 and we offer sundown cruises on our Nopkehee. The SHPYC hosts a Member Mixer once a month. If you are new to our club, it is a wonderful time to meet other members. We serve complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and there is a member charge bar. April’s Member Mixer is set for April 22nd. Just a reminder that we are a reservations based club in our dining room to be able to serve as many members as possible in a timely manner and with excellent customer service. The Fleet Committee is sponsoring a Scavenger Hunt on the lake. The details are in this newsletter. Last year was a fun time for our members who took part. We hope you can make it. CHEF'S CORNER
Crema Catalana Makes 6-8 Servings
INGREDIENTS
2 tbsp cornstarch 2½ cups whole milk A big slice of peel from a lemon and an orange (note: not the zest, but rather big slices of the peel) 1 cinnamon stick 5 large egg yolks ½ cup superfine sugar Additional sugar to caramelize on top Fresh fruit (like figs, raspberries or strawberries) to top
Instructions
1. Put the milk on the stove in a small saucepan, along with the citrus peels and the cinnamon stick. Slowly bring to a boil. 2. Dissolve the cornstarch in a splash of water and set aside. 3. While the milk is slowly heating, beat the egg yolks with the sugar, until the mixture turns pale yellow. Beat in the dissolved cornstarch and a spoonful of the hot milk. 4. Remove the citrus peels and cinnamon stick from the hot milk, and lower the heat. 5. Slowly add the egg yolk mixture to the milk, making sure to keep stirring so that the eggs don't scramble! 6. Stir constantly over a low heat, until the mixture has thickened. 7. Remove from the heat and pour the mixture into traditional clay dishes or ramekins. 8. Allow the custard to cool, and then cover in plastic wrap and chill the crema catalanas for about four hours (preferably overnight). 9. Before serving, I like to let mine come to room temperature (unless it's summer-- that would be too hot!). Then sprinkle a thin layer of sugar on top of each ramekin. Spread the sugar out by tilting the ramekins in all directions. 10. Caramelize with a small kitchen blowtorch (though the truly authentic crema catalanas are made with a hot iron). 11. Top with fresh fruit (optional.) Bon Appétit

Officially Spring
What a great time of year… warmer temperatures and most of all the start of another fantastic boating season. As we began the boating season let’s start off SAFE! Here are some very important things to remember. 1. Take a Boating Safety Course-if you haven’t already, no matter your age, take a boating safety course. 2. Perform routine maintenance on your vessel-This will help prevent those unexpected issues that always seem to pop up right when you have a group of family or friends ready to boat. a.Oil changes, impeller/s, details, batteries, boat washes, etc. 3. Shore Power Cord inspection- Be sure to inspect the full length of your cord even areas you cannot see. Your marina team will be happy to assist. Please remember TO CUT POWER BEFORE INSPECTING! 4. Fueling- make sure to remember fueling safety. Signage can be found on the gas dock for proper fueling methods. a. Fuel Safety-Safety First! • No matter where you are refueling, always clear the area of anyone not directly involved with fueling boat. • Put out all smoking materials and secure your boat to the dock. • Turn off engine(s), electronics, and extinguish all open flames. • Keep the nozzle in contact with the edge of the fill to prevent build up of static electricity to prevent sparking. • Don't top off your tank. Know how much fuel your tank holds and fill it to about 90%. Fuel expands as temperatures rise. • Clean up fuel spills immediately with an oil-only absorbent pad. Wipe down the bilge or any interior parts that may have come in contact with fuel. • Treat your fueling operations with care. Never use hands-free clips, and avoid any distractions while fueling. For more information regarding fueling safety go to www. boatus.org 5. Dock lines-leaving dock lines on the dock is a great idea so you don’t have to reset lines when you return. Make sure you also have some lines on the boat for when you tie elsewhere. 6. Remember NO SWIMMING in the marina- swimming in and around a dock can potentially be deadly. Where there is electricity there can be stray current. Educate yourself on ESD (electric shock drowning) www.electricshockdrowning.org 7. Wear your PFD while boating-make sure PFD’s are properly sized and meet the specifications for whichever activity you might be doing. 8. When docking your boat, remember to COME IN AS FAST AS YOU WANT TO CRASH!!! For more information on marina and boating safety please contact your marina team and we will happy to assist!

FLEET COMMITTEE NEWS Springtime at SHPYC is Fantastic! The Club is bustling with activity, everywhere there is a feeling of excitement! I LOVE to go to SHPYC in the spring and enjoy the events as well as develop new friendships. Speaking of events, get ready, for SHPYC is the place to be this Spring! Commodore’s Ball – Wow, what an amazing event! Congratulations to Gary Treen our new Commodore and the entire Fleet Committee. Further Congratulations to all the Award Recipients. Very well deserved! 2022 David Goodman: Vince Watkins 2021 Sailing Yachtsman Award: Tim Harbick 2021 Power Boater of the year: Mark Benno 2021 Volunteer of the Year: Janet Hosler Annual Car Show and Classic Wood Boat Show - Being held 4/23 (Rain Date 4/30). This year we have added a Classic Wood Boat Show and for the Car Show a Kid’s Choice Award! So, if you know a young person who is interested in cars, the Judges welcome their help. The Fleet Committee knows many of our Members are also Car enthusiasts. Please join us for our first event the evening of April 22nd at PYC. Please email me if you plan on attending: chris@cbslocuminc.com The Spring Lake History Boat Tour - April 16th. Presented by Past Commodore John Johnson and his wife Betsy Johnson. John and Betsy (in their boat), lead a chain of other boats to visit sites on Lake Norman that have historical interest. Interested boaters are encouraged to sign up early. SHPYC Spring Fellowship Series - The SHPYC Spring Fellowship Series will be held on 4/3, 4/10, 4/24, 5/1 and 5/22. This is an exciting and fun series of sailboat races that is open to all levels of sailors and vessels. Register at: https://www.regattanetwork.com/event/23752 The Scavenger Hunt – April 24th. A great way to enjoy boating on the water while searching for clues on Lake Norman. Calling all Super Sleuths as this promises to be another fun time. It’s RAFT UP Time! – May 14th. SHPYC very kindly provides food and soft drinks. If you don’t have a boat, contact SHPYC and they will gladly shuttle you to the event. Remember, attending the Raft Up will earn you Power Boater of the Year points. Progressive Dock Party!!! – The Power Fleet’s first Progressive Party will be on May 21st. Another great time to meet others as food and music is located at different dock locations. Pancake Breakfast – May 28th. The Fleet Committee cordially invites the entire PYC Membership to join us for a complimentary Pancake Breakfast! Don’t miss the pancake bar! Fleet Commissioning – May 29th. The Fleet Commissioning Ceremony is a time-honored tradition that celebrates the opening of the social and boating season and introduces the incoming Fleet Committee.
