GENERAL MANAGER MESSAGE Dear Members, Thank you to ALL of our members for your support of YOUR club! We have started to bring back events to the Club, all while social distancing and keeping our sanitation processes in place. Our first ever Bourbon and Cigar event was such a success that we are going to have another in the first quarter of 2021. The Peninsula Cup Regatta and Poker Run, the Fleet Committee's two biggest events, were held over October 17-18 and they were met with enthusiasm from the membership. The event was a tremendous success and the weather was delightful. Are you interested in joining the Wine Society? If you would like to learn more about wine, enjoy meeting members with like interests, and be able to get wine at a reduced cost, then the Wine Society is for you! Please contact Monica Scott, our Sommelier, to learn more and to register! Her email is beverage@ peninsulayacht.com The Annual Sip and Shop will be held on November 7. Please make your reservations to take part in this member favorite holiday event that includes wine tastings, shopping and hors d’oeuvres. It will prove to be an event you are glad not to miss. Pancakes and PJ’s is back and our PYC children love this event! The craft will be Give Thanks Rock Painting and a fun movie! The Fall Fest is November 14, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. We have live music, fire pit, S’mores kits, complimentary beer, Louisiana Gumbo, a Fall Salad and Chef’s Cornbread. This year we are making some changes to our Thanksgiving Feast and we decided on a traditional ‘Norman Rockwell’ style Thanksgiving. So, this year, we will be offering the menu items family style. Nothing better than gathering around the table and just enjoying each other's company without having to cook! For those that want to stay at home, we will also have a To-Go Thanksgiving Menu as well! Keep an eye out in the weekly eblasts for this announcement of where you can go to order your meal. The PYC Team and I wish for you a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. Butternut Squash Soup A favorite of my family when it is chilly outside. Ingredients 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 4 cups chopped yellow onion 32 ounces pumpkin puree 1 cup diced bacon 1 teaspoon chopped thyme 3 pounds butternut squash, peeled and cut in cubes 8 cups chicken stock 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white pepper 2 cups half & half Directions • Heat the butter and oil in a heavy-bottomed pan • Add the onion and bacon, and cook over medium-low heat for 10 minutes, or until translucent. • Add the pumpkin puree, thyme, butternut squash, chicken stock, salt and pepper. • Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes, until the butternut squash is tender. • Blend the mixture with an blender or immersion blender. • Add half & half, and keep the heat low. • Taste and adjust seasoning if it needs it. • Garnish with green onion and diced crispy bacon. Bon Appétit!

Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” Last year, The Peninsula Yacht Club Members helped children in need throughout the world have a Merry Christmas by generously participating in the Shoebox Project for Samaritan’s Purse. “Operation Christmas Child” is a project that will help fill shoeboxes with a variety of gifts for needy children. Please pick up a shoebox at the Club, take it home and fill it with items a child would love, need, and be excited to receive at Christmas time. Your child’s gender and age, as well as a list of suggested items, will be included inside your box.
Please return your filled shoebox to the Club by Sunday, November 15 by 1:00 PM. One of our members has generously agreed to deliver the shoeboxes to the distribution center, where they will then be shipped to deserving children. Making a child smile and feel loved on Christmas is a wonderful gift for them! Helping these children with your donation and knowing you are bringing happiness to them is a wonderful gift for you!

MARINA NEWS WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A NORTH CAROLINA CLEAN MARINA? With several policies and standard practices in place The Peninsula Yacht Club, a Safe Harbor Yacht Club, is proud to be listed as a “NC Clean Marina!” This consists of and is a combination of promoting clean and safe fueling, biodegradable cleaning products provided in the Ship's Store, a clean shoreline, manicured lawns for safe and cleaner run off and clean docks. These are just a few of the things we do here at The Club! There are several things to remember and keep in mind when it comes to a clean marina. It certainly does not stop here at The Club, but it can start with all of us doing our part!

With over 350,000 registered boats in North Carolina, every effort by boaters to follow the actions below will help preserve waterways in our beautiful state.
SOME CLEAN BOATING TIPS Contain Trash • Do not let trash blow overboard. Trash must be retrieved. • Purchase and pack food in reusable and recyclable containers. • Buy products without plastic or excessive packaging. Plastic used in products is harmful to fish and birds. • Recycle fishing lines, cans, glass, plastic and newspapers. • Follow the “Plus One Rule”— bring back all of your trash PLUS something you find. Dispose of Hazardous Waste Properly • Dispose of paints, batteries, antifreeze, cleaning products, oil, oil filters and other hazardous waste at a hazardous waste collection facility. Cigarette Litter • Cigarette butts are made from plastics and end up in storm drains, creeks and waterways when they are tossed overboard or thrown on to the ground. They can last for decades, leave an unsightly mess and harm fish and other wildlife. Choose Green Products • Use the cleanest maintenance products that do the job. Look for the EPA-certified “Design for Environment” label (DFE), which ensures that the product has minimal environmental impact and is safe for the person using it. Safer products like these reduce water pollution. Use Pump out, Don’t Dump Out • Use marinas’ pumpout stations. • If you don’t have an installed toilet, use a port-a-potty and empty it at dump station or in a bathroom. Human waste can contain disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Swimmers, water skiers and others who swallow or come in contact with water that has been contaminated with human wastes can become ill. Fueling • Prevent fuel spills by filling fuel tanks slowly and using absorbent pads or range to catch drips and spills. • Do not top off or overflow your fuel tank. Leave the tank 10 percent empty to allow fuel to expand as it warms. Prevent Oily Discharges from the Bilge • Keep your engine well-tuned to prevent fuel and oil leaks. Secure an oil absorbent pad or pillow in your bilge and under your engine where drips may occur. Check the pads often, do not let them clog the bilge pump and dispose of them as hazardous waste at a marina or local hazardous waste collection center. Spill Proof Your Oil Changes • When changing your oil, use an oil change pump to transfer oil to a spill proof container. Wrap a plastic bag or absorbent pad around the oil filter to prevent oil from spilling into the bilge.

THE SAILING SCENE The Peninsula Cup was outstanding! As fall colors are now upon us, we continue to have an incredible sailing season on the Lake. October’s Peninsula Cup attracted 33 boats from 3 yacht clubs to compete in two days of racing and to enjoy the fantastic weather. (Who do you think was 1st across the start line in the photo?) Sharing the same weekend with the Poker Run event, the PYC harbor and grounds were very busy places to be! Fall sailing is magnificent on the Lake with the colors, fair winds, and little boat traffic. Keep a careful eye on the weather forecast and wear plenty of sunscreen, it’s a great way to spend the day with family and friends. Calling all skippers, sailors, and want-to-be-sailors - be on the lookout for a December Social Sail in the weekly Happenings email. We’ll match skippers, boats and crew for a few hours of flotilla sailing. Power boats are welcome as well. The PYC Sail Fleet will continue to innovate in support of our on water events while always keeping in mind everyone’s safety in these odd times. COMMODORE'S COMMENTS On October 17 & 18, The PYC and the Fleet Committee hosted the 28th annual Peninsula Cup Regatta and the 22nd annual Poker Run. The weekend kicked off on Friday with the always popular Dueling Pianos. Then on Saturday over 30 sailboats staged the first two races of the Pen Cup. The Poker Run and the Charity Auction took place. We sold over 140 poker hands with the winning hands being played by Ms. Meg Hewitt for first place, Meredith Frisch had the second best hand and Mr. and Ms. Meg Hewitt repeated to win third place. Attendees got to enjoy the humor and magic of Denny Corey and music by Tim Cook and the oyster roast was a huge hit. The charity auction raised over $6,600 to benefit the Levine-Dickson Hospice House of Huntersville, the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center and, this year a new charity the Calvin Newman Youth Boating Safety Fund. Our thanks go out to all of you who cast bids for the items in the auction. Sunday was the final two races for the Peninsula Cup Regatta. There was a great BBQ lunch that afternoon. The weather was phenomenal on both days. It was great to see members interact and have fun while The PYC maintained the highest level of personal protection procedures. It has been a trying year and we are just glad we could provide you with an opportunity to relax and have fun. Stay safe and stay well.
