Welcome to Cymru this Christmas Magazine. The Atlantic rollers, formed way out to sea by a winter storm, are making a bee-line for the Welsh coast.
Stood on the cliffs, high above the sea, on the coast path, you can feel the spray when the waves slam into the cliffs with impressive force. You hear the ooo’s and aahs, like on Bonfire night, from the watching crowds.
The storms might even bring snow. It transforms Wales; beaches with snow, somehow it’s not quite right. Kitted out in the warmest clothes you have, grab that sledge and head for the nearest hill. Being Wales, we have a few! It may not last long but the snow brings the widest smiles to faces and cold, so cold toes, no matter how many socks you have on!
Winter is quiet across Wales, it’s that lull before and after Christmas, but it’s a brilliant time to grab a bargain from our featured advertisers. Keep cosy with a wood burner or a nice meal out that will keep you fuelled and safe from the elements.
Christmas in Wales is a family affair and New Year a time for friends. Plenty of pubs and restaurants open for Christmas and New Year dinner. It’s a winner for everyone with no washing up to do either, but book early!
Winter gives you the chance to reflect on a busy year and to look forward to your next adventure in Wales.
We hope you enjoy the magazine and most importantly Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Winter Walks
With a cosy stoP
Winter in Pembrokeshire might not be peoples first choice for a short break at the darkest time of year but be assured it’s worth the journey.
The breathtaking views take on a whole new character, dancing in and out of shadow as the clouds race across big open skies. You’ll enjoy brisk walks, fresh, fresh air, and even on the wildest, windiest, wettest days, you will have places to explore. And at the end of the day, there’s the sheer joy of knowing that you will retreat inside, your face glowing, to good food, warm drinks and fireside conversations that nurture your soul. Here are six of the best. Enjoy!
Carningli, Newport
• Distance: 4 miles
• Time: 2½ hours
• Fireside: The Golden Lion or Llys Meddyg
There are few sea to summit walks in Wales
as accessible as Carningli in Newport. In the space of a morning, you can paddle in the sea at Newport’s Parrog and then walk 1138ft up the mountain (and back) all before lunchtime. The walk is regularly tackled by locals of all ages and the views are breathtaking – so go for it! When you get back to Newport you have a choice of two cracking fireside retreats. Llys Meddyg, with its roaring fire in their cosy basement bar, or the equally warming Golden Lion pub next door. Both offer exceptional menus if you’ve worked up an appetite.
Angle Peninsula
• Distance: 3.7miles
• Time: 2½ hours
• Fireside: The Hibernia Inn
This gentle half-day circular walk starts at West Angle Bay car park, following the Pembrokeshire Coast Path as it meanders along the coastline back to Angle. You’ll walk along cliff tops, through woodland and across
fields until you sweep round into East Angle Bay and back into the village for your lunch stop or warm-up at The Hibernia Inn.
St Davids
• Distance: 2.6 miles
• Time: 1¼ hours
• Fireside: The Farmers Arms
There’s something really pleasing about being able to walk out of a city and down to the sea, without having to jump in a car. The rugged cliffs at St Non’s will greet you with the day’s weather and it’s a lovely walk round to Porthclais harbour where you may see some brave souls taking a winter coasteer or kayak.
After a walk across the fields back into the city head for The Farmers Arms. It’s a real local, with a cosy bar and fire room that everyone seems to pack into in the winter. It won’t take you long to get drawn into a conversation, where you’ll learn a thing or two about St Davids for sure.
Pembrokeshire
• Time: 2 – 2½ hours
• Fireside: Tafarn Sinc
This exhilarating circular walk takes you from the heart of Rosebush through the remains of the Bellstone Slate Quarry to a recreational forestry area, Pantmaenog Forest, for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders.
Forestry roads gentle lift you up to the ‘Golden Road’ on the Preseli Ridge and a short climb gets you to the highest peak in Pembrokeshire – Foel Cwmcerwyn – at 1757ft. On a good day, you can see the whole of Pembrokeshire, North Wales, Gower and even Ireland!
Dropping back down into Rosebush a trip to Tafarn Sinc will round off your day beautifully, with a wood burning stove, unique bar and the Welsh language in full flow.
• Time: 1½ hours
• Fireside: The Quay Rooms
Tenby is a really pretty town and well worth a walk in winter, especially if the rain is intermittent. Start at North beach and walk through the harbour, around Castle Hill and then down onto South beach and all the way across to Giltar Point and back. You’ll always have Tenby in your sights so you can dash back if the weather turns.
A hot chocolate reward, or something stronger, awaits you (and your dog) beside a roaring fire in the Quay Rooms, a cosy café below the Plantagenet House restaurant. You have to walk down a cobbled alley to get to it and feel like you are finding a real hidden gem, which of course you are. The households a Flemish Chimney circa 10th century and has oodles of character. Well worth a walk around.
Stackpole Quay
• Distance: 6 miles
• Time: 4 hours
• Fireside: Stackpole Inn
This is a wonderful circular walk, taking in some of the best natural attractions in South Pembrokeshire: Barafundle beach, Stackpole Head, Broadhaven South beach, Bosherston Lakes and the 8-arch bridge. If you do only one walk this winter do this one.
When you’re finished head to the Stackpole Inn where a wood burning stove in the top bar awaits winter walkers (and their dogs). Warm yourself by the fire with a hot drink, light lunch or something special from their award-winning restaurant.
If you can’t tear yourself away, bed and breakfast is also available.

Fresh produce tastes much better when in season and there’s plenty to choose from, even in the winter months. Here’s our list of our top five winter fruit and veg!
With the short days and terrible weather, January and February are often dull and grey. But when it comes to produce, the winter months don’t have to be boring. There’s such a wide variety of seasonal produce, meaning it is possible to inject some colour into your cooking.
From hearty root vegetables to bright, sweet citrus fruit, winter produce offers a surprising range of flavours
Bramley Apples
Although available all year round, Bramley Apples are at their best from December until March. Considered by many to be the best cooking apple of all, Bramley Apples are delicious in crumbles, apple upside down cake, homemade apple sauce and even stews.
For a twist on the classic combination of pork and apple, try layering slices of apple on a shoulder of pork and cook slowly in a low temperature oven for a wonderfully succulent piece of meat infused with the flavour of apples.
Swede
Swede is often confused with turnip, as they are both root vegetables and members of
the cabbage family. In season from midOctober to late February, Swede has a round shape and a purple-green skin, unlike the creamy-white turnip.
With a yellowy-orange flesh that’s sweet and earthy, Swede is delicious when boiled and then mashed with a knob of butter and a dash of salt and pepper. The perfect side to any winter roast dinner!
Clementines
Often found at the bottom of our Christmas stockings, clementines are the smallest and sweetest variety of tangerines. In season from November until February, this sweet and tangy fruit is delicious eaten on its own or perhaps dipped in melted chocolate for an indulgent snack. Or, grate the zest and add to sauces, homemade salad dressings and marinades for a tasty alternative to oranges.
Parsnip
Parsnips are usually only harvested after they have been exposed to the first of the winter frosts, so are at their tastiest at this time of year. They have an earthy but sweet flavour, making them the ideal winter vegetable.
Great used in hearty winter casseroles or stews, you can also create tasty dishes where parsnips are the star of the show. Try layering blanched parsnips onto a rolled out
sheet of puff pastry (leaving a 1cm border around the edges) and drizzle with maple syrup or honey for a mouth-watering savoury tarte tatin.
Forced Rhubarb
The first crop of rhubarb, which tastes the best in January and early February, is grown under pots, hence the name ‘forced rhubarb’. With its characteristic tart flavour, rhubarb is treated as fruit though it is actually a vegetable.
Too tart to be eaten raw, make sure you cook the rhubarb with plenty of sugar. It also goes well with apples, so why not whip up a rhubarb and apple crumble, with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, for a tasty dessert?
Other winter fruit and veg to try this month: cabbage, cauliflower, grapefruit, Jerusalem artichoke, lemon, pear, and sweet potato. What’s your favourite winter fruit and veg? Let us know below!
‘Tis the season to be jolly, not just because of the holiday cheer, but because you’re armed with the ultimate guide to surviving your office Christmas party. Brace yourself for an adventure that even Santa would envy!
Step into the holiday party scene like a pro, not a rookie. Pace yourself like you’re in a marathon of merriment. The office party is no sprint; it’s a festive marathon, so fuel up with a pre-party feast and hydrate like you’re training for the Olympics. And remember, Tequila might be a party trick, but becoming a Tequila statistic? Not so cool.
Buddy up, because navigating the festivities alone is like trying to build a snowman without the snow. Find a comrade in chaos, someone to rescue you from the clutches of a Chardonnayinduced meltdown. After all, a true friend is the one who holds your hair back, not your career.
Don’t be the human equivalent of a Facebook check-in button. Get involved, mingle, and don’t be the Grinch in the corner. Save the embarrassing pictures for the morning after, when you can blame it on the mistletoe-induced amnesia.
Speaking of mistletoe, it’s not your wingman. Resist the urge to spill your heart out under its leafy influence. Mariah Carey can’t save you from the aftermath of belting out “All I Want for
Book that cab home like you’re reserving front-row seats to the North Pole fireworks. No one wants to wake up in the office kitchen, cuddling with the photocopier. And while you’re at it, thank the host, thank your boss, and keep your shoes in check. You’re not Cinderella; your ride home won’t magically appear.
Now, onto the Christmas party don’ts. Rule number one: at Christmas, you tell the truth, but not about your colleague’s questionable fashion choices. Avoid starting sentences with “I didn’t like you when I first met you” or any other truth bombs. Save the honesty for your therapist.
Talking about work is like bringing a fruitcake to the party –nobody wants it. This is a time for merriment, not a boardroom meeting. Network with caution; a promotion won’t magically appear in your stocking. And for the love of tinsel, keep the conversation light. No one wants a lecture on the geopolitical implications of snowflake shapes.
Lastly, don’t be the office fountain. Save the tears for the holiday movies; waterproof mascara is your emotional lifeboat. Now, go forth, merry reveler, armed with wit and wisdom. May your Christmas party be the stuff of legend, not HR memos. Cheers to a holly, jolly celebration!
Christmas is You” in your boss’s face. Trust us on this one.

Host a Festive Feast with Style
The British are renowned for their indulgent feasts during the holiday season. Embrace this tradition by hosting a festive dinner party, setting a stunning table with elegant tableware and festive decorations. Incorporate elements like Christmas crackers for a touch of whimsy.
Plan a menu that includes classic dishes like roast turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, and Christmas pudding. Enhance the festive atmosphere with Christmas crackers, each containing a paper crown, a small toy, and a festive joke. This playful tradition adds a lighthearted and entertaining element to the Christmas meal.
Celebrate with the Harmony of Carols
Christmas carols, with their timeless melodies, hold a special place in holiday traditions. Organise a carol singing session, either with friends and family or by joining a local community event. Traditional carols like “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night” evoke a sense of nostalgia and community, bringing people together in the spirit of Christmas.
Create a playlist that blends classic carols with contemporary Christmas songs, ensuring there is something for everyone. Encourage participants to bring along instruments or use simple props like candles to enhance the festive ambiance.
Incorporate Stocking Traditions with a Personal Touch
Hanging stockings is a cherished Christmas tradition that adds an element of excitement to the holiday season. Create a designated stocking area, whether it’s the fireplace mantel or a special display. Personalise stockings with the names of family members, and include small, thoughtful gifts and treats.
Expand on this tradition by incorporating the Christmas Eve box. Fill it with small gifts, festive pyjamas, and snacks, creating a sense of anticipation and joy on the eve of Christmas. It’s a charming way to build excitement and create lasting memories with loved ones.
Embrace the Spirit of Giving with Generosity
Christmas is a time for giving, and embracing the spirit of generosity adds a meaningful dimension to the season. Incorporate charitable activities into your festive traditions, whether it’s donating to local charities or volunteering time during the holiday season. Organise a charity drive, encouraging friends and family to contribute to a cause that resonates with them. Whether it’s collecting food for a local food bank or participating in a charity run, these activities spread goodwill and reinforce the true meaning of Christmas.
A Timeless Celebration of Joy
Transforming your home into a Christmas wonderland is about creating an atmosphere of warmth, tradition, and joy. By infusing your festive décor with subtle nods to timeless traditions, you not only craft a visually stunning environment but also evoke the essence of the season. As you embark on this festive journey, remember that the true magic of Christmas lies in the moments shared with family and friends. Whether you’re singing carols, enjoying a festive feast, or simply basking in the glow of Christmas lights, may your home be filled with the timeless charm of a Christmas wonderland, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.

In Britain, people typically switch their central heating on in October and use it daily until March or April. This coincides with the clocks going back, the drop in temperature and Winter Fuel Payments – to anyone who receives the state pension.
Heating homes accounts for over 70% of household energy consumption. So reducing this figure – while keeping homes warm enough – not only cuts energy bills, but helps meet the carbon reduction commitments that the UK government is legally required to deliver.
The most recent figures show that 2.38m households in the UK are in fuel poverty – which basically means that almost 11% of British homes cannot afford to keep warm. But while the scale of this problem is significant, not all the solutions need to be complex and costly. So here are 10 simple tips for keeping your home warm for little or no extra cost – just in time for that severe weather warning.
1. Use your curtains Heat from the sun is free so make the most of it. Open your curtains and let the sunlight in during the day to make use of this free heat. When it gets dark, shut your curtains, which act as another layer of insulation and keep warmth in your rooms. You should also make sure you don’t have any leaks or gaps so that the warm air can stay in and the cold air stays out – this also helps to reduce
condensation.
2. Use timers The Centre for Sustainable Energy advises that programming your boiler to turn the heating on a little earlier – such as 30 minutes before you get up in the morning – but at a lower temperature is cheaper than turning it on just as you need it at a higher temperature. This is because a boiler heats up at a constant speed whether you set your thermostat to 20°C or 30°C. But don’t make the mistake of leaving your heating on low all day – because then you’re just paying for heat when you don’t need it.
3. Move your sofa It might feel great to have your favourite seat in front of the radiator, but it’s absorbing heat that could be warming your home. By moving it away from the radiator, hot air can circulate freely. The same goes for your curtains or drying clothes – keep them away from the radiator so that you can get the most out of your heat source.
4. Maximise your insulation When it comes to heat, around 25% is lost through the roof. This can be easily reduced by installing 25cm of insulation throughout your loft. It’s also worth seeing what’s going on in your walls, as around a third of the heat in an uninsulated home is lost this way. Although it’s not as cheap to install as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation could save up to £160 a year in heating bills. It’s
also worth checking with your energy supplier to see if they have any insulation schemes running – which can sometimes mean cheap or free installation.
5. Wrap up warm If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly lagged –or insulated. This will keep the water warmer for longer, and reduce heating costs. The Energy Community reckons that insulating an uninsulated water tank could save up to £150 a year – but even just upgrading your tank’s “old jacket” will help to save money.
6. Turn down the dial This may seem a little counter-intuitive, but bear with me. The World Health Organisation previously recommended a minimum temperature of 21°C in the living room, but Public Health England revised this to 18°C in 2014. And research shows that turning your thermostat down by 1°C could cut your heating bill by up to 10%. So keep the dial at 18°C, save money and avoid the negative impacts of a cold home .
7. Block out the draughts Even a simple solution such as a making your own sausage dog draught excluder will help keep the warmth in your home. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that DIY draughtproofing your doors, windows and cracks in the floor could save £25 per year. You can do this yourself for very little cost. Self-adhesive rubber
seals around doors and windows and door draught excluders are relatively cheap and easy to install. So it’s worth getting those doors and windows sealed before winter properly kicks in.
8. Install thermostatic valves
Research at the University of Salford has shown that installing heating controls and theromostatic radiator valves results in energy savings of 40% compared to a house with no controls. These work by allowing you to programme your heating to come on at predefined times – so you only use energy when you need it. New smart thermostats can also be controlled remotely via your mobile so you can turn on your heating on the way home, ensuring it’s nice and toasty when you arrive.
9. Upgrade your boiler If your boiler is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it with a new, more efficient model. Depending on your old boiler type and house, you could save up to £350 with a new A-rated condensing boiler – which uses less energy to produce the same amount of heat. Plus, if it’s new, you’re less likely to have any issues going into the winter season.
10. Reflect the heat Radiator panels are relatively cheap, easy to install, and ensure that heat from your radiators warms up your room and not your walls. They work by reflecting the heat back into the room.
As winter approaches, ensuring your car is prepared for the colder months becomes paramount. The chilly weather can exert additional stress on your vehicle, making it imperative to guarantee it is in optimal condition for both comfort and safety during winter travels. Here are our top 10 tips to help you prepare your car effectively for winter.
1. Schedule a Winter Car Check
Before the frost sets in and garages become inundated, consider booking a winter car check. Whether your vehicle is due for a regular service or not, these checks, often available at discounted rates, encompass a thorough inspection of crucial components such as the battery, tyres, lights, windscreen wipers, and fluid levels. Proactive maintenance can prevent potential winter-related breakdowns.
2. Tend to Your Tyres
Given that tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road, it’s essential to ensure they are in top condition. Regularly check the tread depth, aiming to keep it above 2.5mm for optimal safety. Cazoo cars, for instance, guarantee a minimum tread depth of 2.5mm. Additionally, monitor tyre pressure and inspect for any cuts, cracks, or debris that could pose a threat.
3. Monitor Fluid Levels
Maintaining adequate levels of en-
gine coolant and oil is crucial for your vehicle’s proper functioning. Instead of waiting for warning lights, make it a habit to check these levels regularly, ensuring your car is prepared for winter conditions.
4. Care for the Battery
Colder temperatures and increased use of heating and lights can strain your car’s battery. Get its condition checked and consider investing in a portable jump-start pack as a precaution. Regular short drives during winter can also help keep the battery charged.
5. Keep Your Windscreen Clear
Winter weather often leaves windshields dirtier than ever. Ensure your wipers are in good condition and regularly top up your windscreen washer fluid. Using a quality washer fluid is crucial to prevent freezing in extremely cold temperatures.
6. Maintain Clear Lights and Number Plates
Even if a full car wash isn’t on the agenda, keeping lights and number plates clean is vital. Dirty headlights can impair visibility, particularly at night, and illegible number plates may result in fines.
7. Check Your Brakes
Efficient braking is crucial, especially on slippery winter roads. Conduct visual inspections for any signs of scoring or
corrosion on brake discs. If in doubt, schedule a winter check to ensure your brakes are in optimal condition.
8. Pack an Emergency Kit
Prepare for unexpected situations by packing a winter-ready emergency kit. Include essentials such as a blanket, torch, shovel, first-aid kit, ice scraper, de-icer, high-visibility vest, and a portable jump-start pack. Additionally, store long-lasting food and drinks in case of extended delays.
9. Keep Your Car Clean
Aside from the satisfying aesthetic appeal, regularly cleaning your car is a practical necessity. Winter road salt can be corrosive, potentially damaging your car’s bodywork and accelerating rust development.
10. Maintain Adequate Fuel or Battery Charge
Ensure you always have at least a quarter of a tank of fuel to avoid running low in areas without nearby petrol stations. For electric car owners, maintaining a healthy battery charge is essential for winter journeys, providing power for heating and essential devices in case of an emergency.
By following these top 10 tips, you can significantly enhance the winter readiness of your car, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey through the colder months.

Meta’s push towards controller-free hand tracking adds a new layer of immersion to the Quest 3 experience. While the initial ‘wow factor’ is present, concerns linger about the system’s accuracy and stability, impacting precision in certain applications. Nevertheless, the introduction of hands-on interaction opens up new possibilities for users seeking a more tactile VR experience.
The Verdict:
The Quest 3, priced at an accessible £479.99, stands as a testament to Meta’s dedication to advancing VR technology.
