WEBO ANGUS - TURNING GRASS INTO GREENBACKS

welcome

you can always choose to be happy and content, or not.
i t’s your choice.
- KATHLEEN HALL JACKSON

We are so Blessed to absolutely love what we do. Our family’s matriarch, my Mom, passed away in December. At 94, she reminded us how lucky we are, she was so happy with her life when she looked back over the years. She had faced plenty of hardships in her life but lived her life believing “You can always choose to be happy and content, or not. It’s your choice.”

Thank you for your interest in our program. On the Angus side, we are continuing to seek out and find herd bulls that will produce feeder calves and yearlings in the Top 40% of the breed for Weaning Weights (WW) and Yearling Weights (YW), while still focusing on replacement females. On the Hereford side, Odessa purchased a Top-of-the-line Donor Hereford cow. Watch for her sons in a couple of years.

We continue to view fertility as our very first selection criteria, our cow herd calves in 45 days. We apply intense pressure on feet; bulls must cover the country and need good feet to do so. We have common sense carcass, with additional selection for improving PAP scores. We continue to strive for Balance with maternal traits & maternal index’s as additional score cards, as well as keeping an Eye on the same Value index’s your buyers do. We also use eyeballs and scales! Good Maternal Cows that raise heavy calves and breed early are a big deal to us.

All the bulls in the sale have feed test and efficiency data, ADG and feed conversion, as well as EPDs sale day. We have a note from Dr Steve Paisley Director UW-SARCE, explaining how to apply the data. We continue to demand a lot of our cows, they cover all the bases, we are focused on having an efficient cow herd that targets reduced feed consumption of 10 to 15%, have great feet, extra maternal merit, breed back early, live healthy at altitude with decent dispositions.

There are some power bulls in here, they’ll add the pounds to your calves and yearlings, some highly maternal bulls to leave you with extra fancy females and genuine heifer bulls, we are targeting the 1450 to 1650 pay weight for finished cattle that get there in an efficient and timely manner.

You are welcome to come to look at the bulls any time. We provide all the data we have to help you make your choices. We’ll have lunch ready Tuesday, April 7.

We are grateful and honored that you allow us to have the opportunity to be your source for high-quality Angus bulls. Thank you for taking the time to come.

Sincerely,

WEBO Angus

HERD DEVELOPMENT:

Bulls are fed a forage based ration to have both optimum gain and growth. They will not be packing a lot of extra condition. They will look good, but will not be fat. We still maintain that too much condition will have an impact on their soundness and longevity. We believe they will be better breeders, sounder and last longer if they are not overfed. The dams of these bulls are wintered here at home. They have to make it on native pasture, hay and cake. If they work for us in this environment, they should work for you.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Cattle will sell under the suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association and the American Hereford Association.

CALVING EASE STARS

All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk, and WEBO Angus assumes no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

SUPPLEMENT SHEET:

A supplement sheet will be available sale day with ultrasound data and updated performance as well as scrotals on all bulls. This sheet and all announcements from the auction block will take precedence over information in the sale book.

INSURANCE:

We highly recommend purchasing full mortality insurance on the bulls you purchase, to protect you from loss should they die.

TURNING grass INTO greenbacks BULL SALE

FIRST BREEDING SEASON INJURY GUARANTEE:

We offer a first year breeding season guarantee on bulls selling for $4,500 or more for the 90 day period following first turnout of the bull, for any injury that would keep the bull from being a breeder for the first breeding season. If a problem occurs, buyer will be able to exchange the purchased bull for a bull of similar value. If a replacement is not available, the buyer will be given credit minus salvage for the original bull purchased, that is to be used within one year of sale. Lack of care or feed (starvation or no water), human error or injury caused by purchaser will cause this guarantee to be null and void. Example: Deliberately running into bull with pickup resulting in broken leg.

PAP TESTING (PULMONARY ARTERIAL PRESSURE):

In recent years, our industry has been seeing an increase in Right Heart Valve Failure in black hided cattle, both at lower elevations and in feedlots. Here at WEBO we have watched bloodlines and have been careful not to use lines that are known to have trouble with the issue. Growing up at Laramie and Centennial, WY, I have been very aware of the issues and the costs to producers with PAP problems. We have PAP tested all of the 2-year-old bulls in the sale, at 18-20 months of age. We do this because at this older age and elevation the bull’s PAPs become more reliable and stable. We do not test our yearling bulls because the test results at best are only a screening PAP, the accuracy is 60% or less for low scores on a really good day. Low scores at our elevation on young animals does not mean they will remain so. Low scores are not predictable and may well not have much indication of their future level of reliability at an older age and or high elevation. The results for high scores are accurate on younger animals at lower elevations, the results are a screening test and alert us who the hyper-responders are. Lower PAP scores are a better indication for living successfully at high elevations.

WEBO NORTH STAR 502

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

MATERNAL

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES

$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. EPDs directly influencing a combined index are: CED, CEM, WW, YW, Milk, HP, DOC, MW, Angle, Claw, DMI, Marb, CW, RE and Fat.

WEBO MANIFEST 402

The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 17 traits and calculates three profit indexes.

AHA’s genetic evaluation makes use of a Marker Effects Model that allows the calculation of EPDs by incorporating the pedigree, phenotypic and genomic profile of an animal. Animals that have a genomic profile will be denoted with a GE-EPD logo.

The current suite of Hereford EPDs and profit indexes includes:

Calving Ease — Direct (CE) CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average, if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would have an 8 percent more likely chance of unassisted calving when compared to sire B’s calves.

Birth Weight (BW) BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average, if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD.

Weaning Weight (WW) WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves.

Yearling Weight (YW) YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves.

Maternal Milk (MM or MILK) The MM EPD of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation.

Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G) The M&G EPD reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of the daughter’s progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.”

Carcass Weight (CW) CW EPD is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight.

Rib Fat (FAT) The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs, are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Ribeye Area (REA) REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better- muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Marbling (MARB) MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.

Baldy MaternalIndex (BMI$) The BMI$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of nonreplacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows.

Brahman Influence Index (BII$) The BII$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Brahman x Hereford cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards a commodity beef market since Certified Hereford Beef© does not accept Brahman influenced cattle. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability in finishing nonreplacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep harvested progeny successful for a variety of commodity based programs. This index targets producers that use Hereford bulls on Brahman influenced cows.

Certified Hereford BeefIndex (CHB$) The Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows where all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight and Marbling to ensure profit on the rail. As well there is a positive weighting for Average Daily Gain along with a negative weighting on Dry Matter Intake to ensure efficient pounds of growth in the finishing phase. In addition, there is a positive weighting for Rib-eye Area and a negative weighting for Back Fat to maintain desirable Yield Grades. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that no replacement heifers are being retained.

In Loving Memory

Kathleen Hall Jackson, age 94, passed away on her father’s birthday, December 13, 2025, at the Niobrara Extended Care Center in Lusk, Wyoming. She was born at the old Ivinson Hospital in Laramie, Wyoming, on September 24, 1931, to Ed and Rose Hall. She was Baptized at Saint Mathews Episcopal Cathedral in Laramie.

The mountains, rivers, and creeks of Albany County helped shape her into the tough, independent woman she was. Fly fishing on the Little Laramie brought her the greatest joy; a good fight with a big brown trout was an absolute thrill that she cherished. Make no mistake—she was a world-class dry fly fisherman; she just did it for fun.

Education and ranching filled her life. Graduating from the University of Wyoming with an education degree in 1952, Kathleen taught school in Escondido, California; Saratoga, Wyoming; the Buckeye School in rural Albany County, Wyoming; Slade School in Laramie; and Wheatland Elementary in Wheatland, Wyoming, where she retired from teaching. As a teacher of primary students, her often-stated goal was to “teach them to read—if children can read, they can learn anything.”

Kathleen was born to be a rancher. Her father gave her early instruction in survival of the fittest in Centennial Valley along the banks of the Little Laramie. Forking hay and chopping ice all winter to keep livestock healthy and thriving created the determined, independent, tough woman she would need to be in life. Kathleen was briefly married to Eugene Brown in 1953; a daughter, Kathleen (Katie), was born from this union. She married Richard (Dick) Jackson, whom she had known since she was 14, on October 30, 1954. Two additional children, Arleen (Buttons) and Richard (RJ), completed her family. Her belief in education and reading started at home-she made dang sure her own kids had access to books, and she monitored their use!

Dick and Kathleen left the ranch in Centennial Valley in 1969. They finished raising their family on a farm-and-ranch combination they purchased while teaching school in Platte County. Dick passed away in 1984 after a long, hard battle with mesothelioma cancer, when Kathleen was 52. After spending 43 years teaching school, Kathleen retired and moved to Niobrara County. She said it was easier because she wasn’t looking for Grandpa Dick everywhere she went, and there was the rest of her life to fill up. Ranching full-time was exactly what she needed. So, she loaded her herd of sheep and 11 black cows and hit the road all by herself, with her loyal hired man Manuel in tow.

A life of hard work spent doing what she truly loved—arthritis finally slowed her down. She couldn’t check water or fix fence by herself anymore. She lived with her daughter for a couple of years and finally moved to the extended care facility in Lusk in 2023, when the crippling effects of arthritis demanded she slow down even more. Kathleen finally “retired” from ranching at age 93, selling her herd of fine-wooled Columbia sheep and her fantastic Black Angus cows.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Rose Hall; her brother, Robert Hall; her son-in-law, Waldon York; and the love of her life, her husband Dick Jackson. She is survived by her daughters, Katie (Rod) Smith and Buttons York, and her son, RJ (Shawn) Jackson; grandchildren Merritt, Cinnamon, Megan, Elly, Odessa, Clay, Laramie, and Tally; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mom loved her life filled with her family, livestock & her dogs, especially Border Collies—the ups, the downs, and the plain hard, heartbreaking times—It didn’t matter the times she lived in; it was Truly How She Lived her life. She lived her life her way and she did it with Class.
