Young Rancher discounts have been discontinued from our sale The reason for discontinuing the discount is that on retirement from ranching the ranch has been donated to the Rancher’s Stewardship Alliance (RSA) The RSA mission is to maintain working landscapes in rural communities and nurture the next generation of ranch stewards . We are very happy to provide this opportunity for our community However, since we have given away our most valuable resource . Janet and I need retirement plans so we will be using the young rancher discounts to that end

We would highly recommend that our neighbors and customers investigate RSA and take advantage of their educational programs, conservation opportunities and land access programs to make this landscape a better place for everyone

Our bulls are smaller than bulls at most other sales . There are good reasons why they are smaller at this time in their lives Our bulls are born in April, not in January These cattle are moderate framed cattle . Elephant cattle are bigger and have higher maintenance requirements Our cattle live in the Missouri River breaks, without mountain meadow or irrigated pasture We usually graze our cow herd year-round

Without harvested feedstuffs i e , hay, haylage or silage, except in the worst conditions

Thank you!

Dale & Janet

Quick Reference to ASA EPD and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD): EPD are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels . In using EPD, the difference between two sires’ EPD represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny For example, if sires A and B have EPD of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units) . Key to using EPD is knowing what units they are expressed in . For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPD, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists . A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPD rank him relative to other bulls in the breed . For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD and $ indexes visit www simmental org Listed below are the units ASA EPD are expressed in:

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an allpurpose-sire scenario . (See below for more details .)

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat .

Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers .

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters

Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk .

Marbling (MRB): Marbling score .

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth .

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye .

Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak .

Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age .

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminalsire scenario . (See below for more details .)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight .

Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight

Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score

$ Indexes: Though EPD allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle . That’s where $ indexes come in . Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPD and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI Then, just as with EPD, zero in on the unit difference between bulls (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed ) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another . Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff x 30 hd x 4 yr = $6,000) A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed . For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD and $ indexes visit www .simmental .org .

414 VRT LAZY TV HOMEMADE J414

He was a sire we brought from Thortensen’s Lazy TV Ranch in Selby, ND We thought that this was the best line of cattle for feed conversions we have found to date 414’s Residual Feed Intake was -7 3 for the second-best bull test out of over 200 head that year 414 has lived up to all our expectations! Bruce Hould phoned after the first weight at 66 days on feed He thought we had some new sire groups that had picked up performance as a group The bulls were averaging 4 25 lbs / day (a new record for us) The top 414 son was gaining 6 93 lbs/day When I walk through the pens, I pick out the bulls that continually catch my eye for the performance pen, to start the sale . It was not until we started putting the catalog together that I realized 5 of the 6 bulls in the performance pens were by 414 . I hope you like 414 sons because you are going to see a lot more of them . Bull Lots are 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 19, 23, 25, 27, 28, 31, 38, 41, 42, 52, 66, and 84 .

RH is a true performance bull that keeps birthweight in check . You will see a lot of his calves in the calving ease pens of bulls . This is a homegrown bull and as his name implies after 30 years of raising bulls . RH holds the record of 3 .88 lbs/day from his modest birth weight of 81 lbs to his 365 day weight of 1421 lbs and he achieved this record in a drought where we hauled the cows 400,000 gallons of water that summer This is his third calf crop His sons Lots: 20,30,50,75 and 90

Choosing Veseth Red Angus Bulls has been great for our breeding program. The bulls that we have purchased at the sale have added a lot of great qualities to our calves. Growth, sound structure, docility and the ability to make it on their own. The bulls don’t require any special treatment during the winter. They hold their shape and add muscle and mass. They are ready to go to work during breeding season. The Veseth Cattle thrive in the rugged pastures of South Phillips County. Great job Dale and Crew.

The ranch purchased 004 from Keller Broken Heart Ranch in Mandan, ND We thought he had it all: phenotype, pedigree, disposition, EPDs and individual performance For his Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE) at 12 months of age; he had a 46 CM scrotal with excellent semen quality and an IMF ratio of 135 out of an exceptional herd We were lucky enough to get him bought, but it was a little scary to throw him out with my heifers .

Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle

Paul Beck, Oklahoma State University Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist

Feed is a major cost input for all segments of the beef production chain . Feed efficiency is always a primary determinant of profitability, but when feed costs are high, it becomes even more important We are most familiar with feed efficiency being expresses as the amount of feed required per pound of gain, or the ratio of Feed:Gain There is considerable variation in feed intake by individuals above and below that is expected for the animal’s size and growth rate . Researchers have been using the concept of “Residual Feed Intake” to explore animal feed utilization and the efficiency of feed use . Residual Feed Intake or “RFI” is a measure of feed efficiency defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake (either above or below) and the expected feed intake based on the growth rate of the animal An animal with a positive RFI would consume more feed than expected for a given level of growth, and therefore is less efficient . While an animal with a negative RFI would consume less feed that expected for a given level of growth and is more efficient . Many breed associations have feed efficiency EPDs based on RFI to help select for more feed efficient cattle .

Different RFI has been tied to differences in nutrient digestibility, production of volatile fatty acids and methane in the rumen, feeding behavior, and differences in the microbial population in the digestive tract . Research from Texas, showed that steers and heifers with low RFI had 19% lower feed consumption with the same average daily gain Feed digestibility (along with digestibility of protein and fiber) was increased by 4% and ruminal methane production was reduced by 14% in low RFI (or more efficient) cattle . Feeding behavior was also tied to RFI . In another study from Texas, low RFI steers had fewer and shorter bunk visits and meal events, but the key finding was that low RFI steers had less day-to-day variation in feed intake . More efficient steers (those with low RFI) have lower fasting heat production and thus lower maintenance energy requirements than less efficient steers (those with high RFI), thus less of the feed consumed is used for maintenance

Stress and disposition have also been tied to performance of breeding and growing animals Cortisol is a hormone associated with the fight or flight response, higher cortisol levels have been measured in animals with poor disposition (wilder cattle) . Research conducted in Nebraska by Andrew Foote (now in our OSU Department of Animal and Food Sciences) found that while cortisol levels were not associated with feed intake, cattle with higher cortisol had lower average daily gain, higher feed:gain, and higher RFI (were less efficient) .

These findings point to mechanisms for improved efficiency of low RFI calves and can provide selection tools to help beef producers reduce costs and feed resource use

Veseth Cattle Facts

Will Baeth leads with 4-H steer champions for the Veseth Steers His steer placed Grand Champion in the Red Angus Division and placed 2nd in the overall carcass competition He had a 9 .45 marbling score, which put him in a quality grade of nearly mid-prime My reaction was we should have left his testicles in that bull and put him out with the cows

DARR Feedlot

Tyson, Lexington, NE Plant

The Ranch retained our steers and sold them on the carcass in 2025 The Simmental Association collected carcass data on 135 steers . The averages were as follows:

Aubrey Smith from Cohagen got in the winner’s circle for the third time with Veseth genetic descendants .

Starting in 2027, the ranch has joined the Country Natural Beef Cooperative and will market our steers through this program for premium beef . This will allow more carcass information on our cattle and hopefully down the road some market options for our customer’s cattle

We miss our old friend and mentor Bill Pelton . We would like to thank his group for all the help putting our sales together over the years .
