Welcome to our Cattleman’s Advantage Bull Sale! While recent times have presented all of us with many changes and challenges, we’ve chosen to focus on the positive and to keep moving forward and looking upward. The blessings seemed to shine brighter that way, and among those in 2021, were the delightful babies we’ve added to our VDAR families. Everyone loves growth and production in their operations, and this time it wasn’t from the fuzzy little four-legged kind, but the sweet cooing, smiling, laughing (and sometimes crying!) kind!! Tim Crabtree and Jaynee Van Dyke were married in a small ceremony in November 2020 and they held a beautiful wedding at the ranch this past September! And then just a few days before this sale book went to press, they welcomed a sweet baby girl, Miss Shirlee Colleen. Jaynee’s older sister, Brittnee, and husband, Kelby, also welcomed a darling little boy back in May, Bradlee Douglas. Tom and Sherry Wulff were excited to be grandparents again as their daughter and son-in-law, Kasey and Charles Pera, were blessed with their third little one, Marsali Caterina! And, finally, the Feddes Family welcomed another baby…when Nate and Aly had a sweet little girl, Lydia Joy, who joined her happy blond brothers! Through all the excitement…along with the ups and downs of life in 2021, we did manage to keep focused on the cattle as well and are extremely pleased with the offering for our upcoming Bull Sale! Each year we continue to be very happy with the progress of the bulls, regardless of outside circumstances that play into the picture. Many visitors have expressed positive comments in our sale offering this year and we’re once again looking forward to gathering in southwest Montana with many of you to sell some great Van Dyke bulls on February 24th! And we know with travel, weather and just life, that you may not be able to join us in person, so we invite you to attend online through DVAuction. Each year, we’re getting more and more folks who are part of the sale that way and placing bids online as they’re out and about. It’s becoming the way to buy if you can’t come in person and we encourage you to join the action! We are fortunate that we have very few of the affected pedigrees. However, when there is a possibility, all animals involved have been tested free of all known genetic defects. Retained Interest Van Dyke Angus reserves the right to 1/3 semen interest in all sale bulls. The 1/3 semen interest is a semen revenue sharing interest only, with 100% of the bull’s salvage value belonging to the buyer.

Settlement & Delivery All bulls are to be settled for on sale day unless prior arrangements have been made. In regards to the bulls selling, Van Dyke Angus is offering to feed, maintain and fertility test for an approximate March 15 delivery. Free delivery is available in Montana and surrounding states. All bulls are fully guaranteed for one full breeding season. Food & Refreshments Will be available throughout the duration of the sale. Sonny Boy offspring have become a dominant part of our breeding progam over the last 5 years. He has sired Showdown, Gallatin and Lone Peak, all of which have become highly used in our herd. His daughters have gone on to raise 100 calves at a ratio of 102 in 12 different herds. They make fantastic females and have proven themselves to be fertile and sound, producing wonderful attitudes with exceptional foot structure.

Gallatin has a very exciting future ahead of him here at VDAR. His daughters are tremendous young cows. Extremely sound footed and correctly made with great attitudes and ideal udders. He’s seen a lot of use the last 3 years and we have a lot of calves on the ground right now. His calves have a ratios of 101 on both weaning and yearling. His grand-dam is a tremendous 12 year old cow and the mother of VDAR Stout 1623.

We just calved his first daughters in and they are fantastic young mothers. 400 comes from an old cow who had him at 12 years old. His sire we bought from Deitz Angus, he was out of one of our cows who was a donor for them for many years. 400 had a birth ratio of 94 on his first set of calves. This is a bull that packs a punch, the $22,000 selection of the 2017 bull sale. A son of Genex sire VDAR Sonny Boy 1194, Showdown was a complete standout from the time he was born. His daughters have done a tremendous job for us and continue to do so. Showdown’s Pathfinder dam has a calving interval of 367 days, a weaning ratio of 106 and a yearling ratio of 105 on 9 head. The feet and disposition of Showdown are remarkable, much like his sire. They also exhibit tremendous muscle shape and growth wrapped up in a stylish package. We have used Showdown heavily on cows and heifers with tremendous success.

Lone Peak was the High Selling bull of the 2018 Bull sale. Selected by Genex and Stevenson Angus, he was a real standout. Lone Peak has turned into one of the easiest calving bulls that we have ever used. Over 200 head of his calves have ratio’s of 94 on birth. Extreme calving ease without sacrificing bone mass. His first daughters have an average ratio of 101 on weaning. Deep bodied, stout made with the great dispositions we have come to expect from offshoots of Sonny Boy.

Maternal Power! by Tom Wulff There is so much more to maternal genetics than just high “milk production!” Over the past number of years there has been a huge drive in the Angus business to produce cattle narrowly focused on carcass traits or cattle with tremendous spread between birth and yearling, or in other words terminal traits! However, for many years at Van Dyke Angus, we have been driven to produce genetics with the ultimate Maternal Power. It is our belief that the commercial cattleman’s bottom line is much more positively affected by Maternal Power than it is by terminal traits, and the following aspects of maternal power explain why: MOTHERING ABILITY With a huge portion of cattle production happening in harsh environments, the value of a cow’s ability and willingness to mother can’t be overstated! In a few short hours in tough weather conditions, a calf can be lost and if mom isn’t focused on making that calf get up and nurse, the result can be tragic. This one trait will lead to more calves weaned and sold and that means more profit! CALVING EASE Birth weight does contribute to ease of calving, but there are other factors that high maternal cattle provide that allow them to calve easier! Pelvic area, shape, and short gestation are all traits that maternal cattle bring to the game and help cattle to calve quickly and efficiently! FERTILITY The most important maternal trait of all! For over 20 years, we have eliminated all cows from our herd that do not breed in the first 42 days of the breeding season, and trust me when I say that when we go to breeding cows in the spring, they get bred! We all know that the early-born calves are the ones that make the most money. CARCASS QUALITY Conventional wisdom with old-time cattle producers and historical cattle packers was always that high maternal genetics correlated to high quality carcass cattle! A study was performed by Iowa State University where researchers recently analyzed the results of more than two decades of selection on marbling in the university’s 400 head cowherd. It compared marbling to maternal traits, and showed that high marbling cattle had little to no negative effect on positive maternal traits. My belief is that the premise of the study is taken from the wrong perspective! The study was published by Certified Angus Beef and its purpose was to dismiss the concern among beef producers that the tunnel vision focus on carcass EPDs has lost focus on the overwhelming need for quality maternal genetics! Our belief is great maternal genetics have always correlated strongly to exceptional carcass quality! We may not agree that many of the so-called high quality carcass cattle of today are right for the industry, but we do believe great maternal cattle will make great carcass cattle! MILK PRODUCTION Obviously maternal cattle are good milking cattle, but, can cattle milk too much? The answer to that is yes! High-milking cattle can out-milk their environment, leading to a loss of flesh and an inability to breed early. An optimum level of milk production is what makes all of these other traits work! Maternal Power at VDAR is designed to provide our customer, the commercial cattleman, with cattle that breed up at the highest level, calve more early-born calves, wean more total calves, and most importantly, make more PROFIT! - 36 -
