DEAR CATTLEMEN:
What a year for cattle producers. With prices on calves and cull animals breaking records all over the United States. It makes being in this industry look like were on the right path finally to insure that our future generation of farmers and ranchers can make an excellent living again.
As I sit here and write my Dear Cattlemen letter for the 20th year, there has been some big changes around Prickly Pear Ranch. I accepted an opportunity to look at leasing a ranch of my own to add to the future expansion of the Prickly Pear program. Kyler has taken on the day to day at Prickly Pear Ranch. I will be overseeing the genetic decisions on the herd and help with the AI breeding all of the cattle. In the future, we are looking at using the herd I’m working with to test all of the genetics that we produce to insure even more that we are producing the best genetics for our customers. Our hope is to start producing up to 150 commercial bred heifers that are Prickly Pear genetics. Feel confident that you will continue to receive the same genetics and guarantees that we have always provided.
Now on to the bull offering. This year we ramped up our 2 year old program to 50 plus also adding another consignor, Jace Burrier, to go along with Keller Angus that sold with us last year.
Again this year we have a nice set of embryo bulls out of the Great 6053s donor. There are three Marda Blacksmith, a High Road purebred bull and the last Commodore embryo out of her.
We have a 17 Predictable sons in the sale. Again, they went right to the top of the bunch. He produces cattle with high fertility lots of length and above average thickness.
Schooley Standout has 7 sons in the sale. He sires depth of body with excellent disposition. The daughters did an excellent job for us this year producing above average calves.
I added the Harvest Moon AI sire this year and I’m very impressed with what he produced adding thickness, length on a moderate frame.
There are 4 Major Impact sons this year he will add a lot of thickness while not increasing the birth weight too high.
This year there are 7 Bold Ruler sons that are high calving ease low birth weight bulls. He adds length great disposition and the ability to use them on heifers or cows.
I also went back to the TJ Roosevelt bull last year to produce some more females for our herd. The 3 bulls in the sale will produce some top females for any herd.
The last bull I would like to touch on is Progressive. He sires low birthweights with above average growth and excellent dispositions. I’m looking forward to the upcoming calving season so we can see a large group of Money Maker calves and also the calves out of the Money Maker son King Chester that sold to Jake Fritz in last year’s sale.
We will also be getting calves out of the new herd sire Airborne purchased for Lassle Ranch last year.

FROM THE WEST ON US 12 -Turn left (N) at 3rd light (Henderson Street). Turn right (E) at stop sign in front of fairgrounds (Custer). Continue east until you cross over I-15 and then use the directions from I-15 above.

NEW CUSTOMERS
For those of you that are new customers. I just want to go over a few goals we strive for: 1. Disposition. I see a lot of people now are putting disposition codes in their catalogs. We take great pride in the disposition of our cattle, so you can assume they’re all very docile unless noted by us.
2. Retaining growth while improving everything else we all want. Calving ease, smaller birth weights, moderate frame size, good udders, feet, etc. Growth is one of Simmental’s best assets. Some people are concentrating on birth weights so hard they are losing the growth advantage.
3. We concentrate more on calving ease and maternal calving ease than birth weights. All the bulls in the sale were unassisted at birth. 4. We also look at individual performance more than growth EPDs. The EPDs will change if the animal has the performance, but the animal won’t always perform just because he’s got good EPDs.
RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST
The bull buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value, and 2/3 semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale (unless otherwise noted). This means we are retaining a 1/3 semen interest in these bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Prickly Pear Simmental Ranch (PPSR) to 1/3 of the revenues of any semen sold. PPSR semen interest remains even if the bull or any interest in the bull is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that PPSR’s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of PPSR’s interest if the bull is ever sold. PPSR will not be responsible for expense related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased, unless a mutual agreement is reached prior to semen collection or promotion. Our retained semen interest also includes the right to collect semen on the bull at our expense and the buyer’s convenience.
ACTUAL SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS
We do not believe in adjusted yearling scrotal measurements, therefore all scrotal measurements are actual figures. Actual measurements will be taken at the end of January. All bulls under 30 centimeters will be sifted reguardless of age. The bull’s testicular size is an early indicator of puberty, which is passed on to their sons and daughters. Bulls with larger testicules service more cows and produce more semen, plus their daughters cycle at an earlier age and have a higher conception rate.
All bulls are measured and palpated by Derek Brown DVM prior to sale. Since a lot can happen between January and April, they will all be fertility tested prior to delivery. The extra $25 added to our $100 off if you take your bulls on sale day is to pay for testing at home with your other bulls. The scrotal measurements will be on a supplement sheet along with carcass data.
Most testicular growth occurs from nine to twelve months of age. Remember to consider the age of the calf at the end of January when using these measurements.
EPD & Index Definitions
Instructions: The following are definitions of ASA’s EPD and indexes and can be used by members in their catalogs or other marketing material to define EPD and indexes.
CE • Reported as the difference in percentage of calves being born unassisted out of first-calf heifers, with higher values representing greater calving ease.
BW
• Reported as the difference in pounds of calf birth weight.
WW
• Reported as the difference in pounds of progeny weaning weight.
YW • Reported as the difference in pounds of progeny yearling weight.
ADG • Reported as the difference in postweaning pounds gained on a daily basis.
DMI • Reported as the difference in pounds of daily dry matter intake.
MCE • Reported as the difference in percentage of daughters calving unassisted as first-calf heifers.
MILK • Reported as the difference in maternal pounds of weaning weight from an individual’s daughters due to milk.
MWW • Reported as the pounds of weaning weight expressed in daughters’ progeny due to the milk production of the daughter and the direct genetic effect for weaning growth.
STAY • Reported as the difference in probability of a sire’s daughters staying in the herd until 6 years of age, given that they calved as a 2-yearold.
DOC • Reported as the difference in yearlingage progeny temperament, represented as a difference in probability that progeny will be scored as a 1, rather than a 2–6 on the docility scale (1 = docile disposition; 6 = extremely aggressive).

$API • Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a grid (carcass grade and yield).
$TI • Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a grid (grade and yield).
$GAIN • A prediction designed to identify animals that are more profitable in the feedlot by converting feed into weight. $Gain is a combination of DMI and ADG, where ADG is weighted by the value of a pound of gain, and DMI is negatively weighted by the cost of a pound of dry matter. $Gain is expressed as the dollar difference per head per day during the post-weaning period.
