Frank and Charlene Mehling Greetings, fellow livestock producers, producers We wish to invite you to our annual yearling bull and commercial heifer sale that will be held Friday, April 22, 2022 at Bowman Auction Market, Bowman, North Dakota. The bulls have wintered at Midland Bull Test at Columbus, Montana again and will arrive at Bowman on Monday, April 18. 18 You are invited to view them at Columbus before they depart from there, or at Bowman before the sale. The bulls were with their dams on pasture with no extra feed until mid- November when they moved to Columbus. Their gain on feed is 3.45 lbs. per day. They are well grown and in condition to survive the coming breeding season. Due to the drought we are offering less bulls and heifers at the sale. Last fall we sold more cows and wean age calves than we usually do. Our grass and the hay production has been very much on the minus side. Thank you Steve Williams and crew for feeding them for us. Thank you Vanek Cattle Services for clipping them for us. Forty five commercial heifers will arrive for the sale. Brian and Susan Sarsland have wintered a group of our heifer calves for us and the rest of them have been at home here on pasture with hay and lick barrels. Some of the heifers are Angus/Hereford cross. cross When we fill the quota of our need in the registered herd, we put the excess cows with Hereford bulls and have the resulting females in our sale. Our registered calves are never creep fed. We want to know what they can do on what the pastures provide without help. Strict culling is implemented with our mother cows and with the bull calves that we retain for the sale. The bulls that do not qualify get the band at weaning. All bulls have had veterinary recommended shots. They are semen tested. The semen test certificates are available sale day. The first year breeding guarantee is explained on the opposite page. If within 10 days of the sale you find the bull’s disposition unsuitable, we will replace him or refund in full if we don’t have a replacement. If you haul your bull home yourself sale day there will be a discount of $100.00. We are reserving 1\3 revenue sharing semen interest in all bulls sold. sold The purchaser owns the bull and his entire salvage, but if semen in sold we will have a share. If we desire to collect a bull we would like to pick him up and return him at the customer’s convenience. We wish to thank our customers for your past support of our program. - FIRST YEAR BREEDING GUARANTEE -

All bulls selling for $1850.00 or more will be covered 50% by Medicine Rocks Ranch if they are injured during their first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. 50% of the value of the injured bull, minus one-half salvage value, will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement bull if one is available. Salvage value, if any, will be split equally between Medicine Rocks Ranch and the buyer. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. All claims must be made by September 30, 2022. Example 1: A $5,000 bull is injured, a credit of $2500 minus one-half any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 2: A $2000 bull is injured, a credit of $1000 minus one-half any salvage value will be given to the buyer. Example 3: A $1800.00 bull is injured, no credit is given. Buyer retains all salvage value.

KPHU 4055 is known as “Hula”, as he was bred at Kukuipahu Ranch in Hawaii. He has been a good addition to the sire lineup. He exhibits extra hind quarter with a true herd bull presence and is siring moderate framed thick cattle. He has a good disposition and excellent feet. We will certainly be seeing many more outstanding calves from him as we plan to use him much heavier in the future as he continues to impress us with his progeny. He is also available for visitors at Medicine Rocks Ranch between Baker and Ekalaka, MT.

Beaver Creek’s dam had a mature weight of 1175 lbs., a perfect udder at 16 years of age, impeccable feet, and consistently weaned calves well above average (15 = WW Ratio 110). His paternal grand dam SAV BLACKCAP MAY 4136 is possibly the best cow to ever enter the Schaff Angus flush pen. Hello everyone! First of all, thank you for your interest in our program. We believe the cow is key. You cannot develop the “perfect” bull if you are not initially impressed by the cow. Our ideal cows are the ones that calve on their own, breed back timely each year, and perform well in our environment on limited, to no extra inputs while bringing in a big healthy calf each fall . We ask our cows to graze 10+ months of the year whenever possible. The Cows need to be out working to find the best forage available and stay in good flesh. Of course the cow needs to meet our physical standards (moderate frame size, feminine head, expansive rib, adequate hip). She also needs to exhibit great maternal instincts the moment the calf hits the ground, yet be docile enough to let us tag and weigh her calf. With the built-in convenience traits (udder quality, fleshing ability, structural correctness, sound feet) of our herd and the proven females behind the sires we chose to use, we believe you can find confidence in our bulls. Our bulls are fed enough to get a test of feedlot performance, but we absolutely will not push them to the point of harming their long-term structural development. The bulls have been in a pasture, have had plenty of exercise, and are ready to cover cows while remaining in decent flesh. We acknowledge fat bulls sell and we could probably make more money by pushing our bulls, but we refuse to hinder the long-term value of many years of breeding service. This year the bulls were developed at Rounds Angus in South Dakota. Rounds do a great job of developing the bulls with a ration of free choice hay, Bull grower Canola, and Purina Ultimate Breeder 8 mineral. We believe customer satisfaction is paramount to our success! We strive for the type of cattle that will last, but in the case that one does not, we want to make it right. If you ever have a problem with one of our bulls let us know ASAP so we can make it right. We would like to give a big heartfelt thank you to our friends, family, and neighbors for their help throughout the year and their support of our program. We couldn’t do this without you! Medicine Rocks Ranch has been blessed to have Spencer and Cori Wahl with us for over two years. Spencer and Cori moved to MT from WY, made their house and home on the ranch. They celebrated their wedding and one year anniversary during this time. As Spencer has worked for the ranch, Cori pursued her dream business venture with a friend. Spencer has been a tremendous addition to Medicine Rocks Ranch. Sadly, our hearts were shattered on January 12, 2022 when Cori passed away due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Her beauty, smile, charisma, infectious laugh, energy, spontaneity, creativity and ability to experience, cherish and savor all the splendor life had to offer (no matter how big or small), was unmatched. Whether taking in a breathtaking sunset, a beautiful starry night, working indoors or outdoors to create masterpieces with flowers and decorations or enjoying every moment with friends, family and her animals, she did it at 100%. How to Read the Report - Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), (EPD) is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. EPDs are enhanced by genomic results generated by: Accuracy (ACC), (ACC) is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. $Value Indexes, an economic selection index allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. PRODUCTION - Calving Ease Direct (CED), (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), (BW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), (WW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), (YW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), (RADG) expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Dry Matter Intake (DMI), (DMI) expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. Yearling Height EPD (YH), (YH) is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), (SC) expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Docility (DOC), (DOC) is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. FOOT SCORES - Claw Set EPD (Claw), (Claw) is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle EPD (Angle), (Angle) is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth. MATERNAL - Heifer Pregnancy (HP), (HP) is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Herds (MkH) indicate the number of herds from which daughters are reported. Daughters (MkD) reflects the number of daughters that have progeny weaning weight records included in the analysis. Mature Weight EPD (MW), (MW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height EPD (MH),expressed (MH) in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), ($EN) expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. CARCASS - Carcass Weight EPD (CW), (CW) expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), (Marb) expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), (RE) expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), (Fat) expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Group/progeny (Carc Grp/ Pg and Usnd Grp/Pg) reflects the number of contemporary groups and the number of carcass and ultrasound progeny included in the analysis. $VALUE INDEXES - $Value indexes, indexes an economic selection index allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. $Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), ($M) an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct and maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W), ($W) an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight. Feedlot Value ($F), ($F) an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency. Grid Value ($G), ($G) an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. Beef Value ($B), ($B) a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid.
