Celebrating 50 years! It is with great pride that I am writing this letter, celebrating 50 years of Mangen Angus Ranch. It is also with deep sorrow we celebrate without John and Chris. Chris passed away in the fall of 2008 and we just lost John to COVID in October. Together they created an iconic name in the Angus world, raising high quality bulls and creating a fantastic customer base. Our customers, as we call them, are our extended family. For this we thank each and everyone of you for your loyal support and friendship. It has been a tough couple of dry years for ranchers, but as ranchers do, we manage to keep trudging on. The bulls were fed out at the ranch again this year. They are fed on a ration that is formulated by the CBH nutritionist. Our goal at Mangen Angus Ranch is strict semen testing, structural soundness, maternal instinct, good disposition, and satisfied customers. We are honoring the 5% off on 5 bulls purchased and 10% off on 10 bulls. We will pay $100.00 per bull taken home on sale day, free delivery as always at your convenience. As for the one-year unconditional guarantee, we will not be able to satisfy this with it being our final bull sale. We will, however, have a few bulls left at home if you have problems. PERFORMANCE INFORMATION BIRTH WT. EPD: Birth weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an indicator of an individual’s contribution to its progeny’s weight at birth and is a comparison to breed average. Birth weight seems to affect calving ease of first calf heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT: Birth weight is moderate in heritability and excessive birth weight may increase calving difficulty. Birth weight seems to have a positive relationship to yearling growth and each breeder must determine how much birth weight is acceptable. It seems birth weight will vary from year to year depending on winter weather and feeding rations. Length of gestation can also affect birth weight. The unborn calf is gaining about one pound per day during the last days of gestation. WEANING WEIGHT EPD: Weaning weight EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in weaning weight you would expect from the progeny of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for weaning weight. It is related to the genetic growth that a bull will pass along to his offspring. WEANING WEIGHTS: Actual weaning weight is taken at the time of weaning. Adjusted 205 day weight is a calf’s weaning weight adjusted to a standard 205 days of age. Adjusting weaning weights allow for comparison of one bull against another for weaning growth. These comparisons are only against other animals in a contemporary group in the same herd where all animals are handled the same. Since adjusted weaning weights are moderately heritable, choosing bulls with high ADJ WW can increase that trait in your herd. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD: The yearling EPD is expressed in pounds and is an estimate of the amount of increase or decrease in yearling weight you can expect from the offspring of a bull compared to an average bull of the breed for yearling weight. ADJUSTED 365 DAY WEIGHT: Yearling weights are adjusted to 365 day weights to make an accurate comparison of bulls. This comparison is also made against animals of a contemporary group. Since 365 day weight is considered highly heritable, choosing for the 365 day weight will increase growth. There is a direct correlation between birth weights and increased yearling weights. Accepting a little more birth weight may be necessary in increasing yearling weight. MILK EPD: Milk EPDs are a prediction of milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Milk EPDs are not related to teat size or udder shape of those females. PELVIC AREA: Pelvic area is one of the factors which determines calving ease. Pelvic area is attained by multiplying the width times the depth of the pelvic opening. Pelvic area is highly heritable and measuring the pelvic area in bulls should be a good indicator of pelvic size that can be expected in a bull’s daughters. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE: Scrotal circumference is directly related to mobility and concentration of semen. Bulls with larger testicle size are more likely to have higher pregnancy rates. Scrotal circumference is also closely related to age at puberty in both bulls and females. Maintaining early sexual maturity in larger, fast growing cattle is among the most important performance traits and is essential to profitability.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1.
The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.
2.
The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.
3.
The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.
4.
Pelvic measurement and angle, as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease.
5.
Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.
6.
Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.
7.
Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.
Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lbs. may actually be 80-90 lbs. Remember, everything is relevent. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lbs. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.
