Welcome to the
Ellingson Simmentals 26th Annual Performance Bull and Female Sale -Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 26th Annual Production Sale, I would like to thank you for your interest and support since we began breeding Simmentals in 1990. In addition to my goals of improvement with the breed, you have challenged me to seek out the best genetics available so that you can bring cattle back to your herd that will make improvements also. Our original goal was to raise Simmentals with high performance and eye appeal, in addition we now also focus on calving ease with exceptional carcass traits that results in high API and TI that is sought for in our commercial producers. In order to achieve these goals, we utilize artificial insemination and embryo transfer from North American genetics.
We have been flushing two donor cows that will provide exciting genetics, both in this sale and the future. HHS Georgia 802G checked the boxes we were looking for in a donor cow when we purchased her from Robert Fitzpatrick, unfortunately we lost her this year but her genetics will live on through her embryos, this may be the last sale we will offer any of her embryos. Miss R Plus 3007A has progeny and embryos in the sale, the lot one female in the R Plus Dispersion in 2022, she has offspring that have sold for $150,000 and $130,000 in previous sales, her age may limit how many more embryos we can sell, take advantage of this years opportunity to buy some. We had an amazing crop year, the rains came at just the right times with no damage, which resulted in yields that we had not seen before. The lush pastures provided a good growing season for the calves. Once the bulls were weaned, they received a 46 Mcal ration, with only 7 pounds of corn/distillers and a pound of supplement, along with corn silage, chopped alfalfa and free choice mixed hay. This will guarantee long lasting bulls with no feet issues. The entire calf crop is on the American Simmental Association Calf Crop Genomics program, with DNA testing using the GGP-LD Genomics test, it verifies parentage and gives us genomically enhanced EPD’s that are similar to an animal that has 10-25 progeny for calving ease, weaning and yearling weight, and 22 birth weight measurements, improving the accuracy of the EPD’s you are looking for. They are also tested to see if they are homozygous or heterozygous for color, the polled gene and dilution. Our cow herd has gone through the cow DNA Roundup program to verify parentage and improve accuracy. We also participate in the ASA Total Herd Enrollment program which also improves accuracy. In the past we have been awarded the Performance Advocate award for these measurements. All bulls and heifers will have had ultrasound measurements for rib eye size, marbling and backfat, this data will be available online and at the sale. The bulls will be semen tested with scrotal measurements. Be sure to register with DVAuction.com early if you are interested in viewing and bidding with this method. Haul your bulls home sale day and receive a $100 per head discount. Free delivery within North Dakota or 250 mile radius if delivered by April 15. Bull delivery begins approximately April 1. Terms of Sale
Semen Interest
We will feed your bulls for $3.00/day begining April 1. We are not responsible for accidents to your bull during this time. We recommend taking insurance, please see Jeff Thomas.
Volumn Discounts
We reserve one third revenue sharing semen interest in all bulls. We reserve the right to collect 100 units of semen for in herd use at your convenience and our expense. Canadian Buyers – We will guarantee cattle pass health requirements and will deliver your purchases to border crossings in ND. All export fees need to be paid by buyer for purchases under $3,500.
Purchase 3 bulls-3% discount, four bulls 4% discount, five or more bulls 5% discount. No discount on heifers.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for co mparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their p rogeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving fro m -5 to +10 y ields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent mo re unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank h im relat ive to other bulls in the breed. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Average Daily Gai n (ADG): Pounds of postweaning daily weight gain. Back Fat (B F): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Cal vi ng Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring achiev ing a docile (1) score. Maternal Cal ving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical co mputation, $ indexes blend EPDs and e conomics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (b red to both Angus first -calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remain ing heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine wh ich index to use; if you’re keep ing replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth co mpared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull co mpared to another. For examp le, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an ext ra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 d iff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the population.
