– From the Heart of Big Sky Country –

Danell DiamonD Six Ranch Gelbvieh

Well, this is our 31st bull sale and we probably will not be having another, since we sold our herd to Galen and Brady Geidel of Geidel Cattle Company in Greenfield, Iowa. We will have a few bulls next year to cover any bull we may need to replace due to injury or whatever. We are still calving a few older and late-bred cows that we kept and we did retain a handful of our Top open heifers.

I am going to miss the cattle, the customers, and the comradery - but we are getting older. I always said it never felt like a job because I enjoyed it so much, but some days it has begun to feel like work (and I don’t seem to mind sitting by the warm fire once in awhile).

With that said, I do feel like we are offering some of the finest Purebred Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Balancers, as well as one Purebred Angus this year – all anxious to move your programs forward! Dr. Greg Carlson, DVM does our foot scoring and does a serious evaluation and he is happy to explain the process if interested. A perfect foot score is 5 for claw structure and 5 for heel angle (see page 15 of catalog for a full description).

The bulls sell with a 1st year breeding season, sight-unseen guarantee. If you do want to see them in person, they are fed here at the ranch and can easily be viewed anytime as long as you give us a call to make sure we are around. Also, we will have a little get together at the ranch Friday afternoon, March 20th starting around 4.

The bulls sell in an ONLINE ONLY auction at billpelton.com – bidding opens Thursday, March 19th and closes Saturday, March 21st at 1 pm MST at which time bidding will continue for all lots in 5 minute increments until there are no more bids placed on any lot. You can always count on Bill Pelton’s daughter, Darci Sachdeva, to talk you through the technical part of getting online and bidding. She is professional, very personable, and easy to reach on the phone at (406) 794-3174.

SEMEN TEST and HEALTH INFO: Full Breeding Soundness exams have been performed. Scrotal measurements and foot scores are listed with the performance data on each bull. INSURANCE: We are willing to pay for ½ the insurance cost to insure every bull sold this year. We have always guaranteed our bulls through the first breeding season, but we feel that this offer is a better deal for you and us as the insurance covers the first full year. Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled 43% Gelbvieh Balancer heifer/cow bull with an 83# birthweight! Jagger boasts an 820# WW (111 ratio) and a 1317# YW (107 ratio). Why his EPDs (WW & YW) are not higher is beyond me – thank you ‘genomically enhanced’ EPDs. With a (6 claw/6 heel) foot score and a 9 for Tenderness! Jagger’s dam, JOB DANELL Harmony 42L, is a first calf heifer with a performance second to none! She had a 77# birthweight (95 ratio) with a 619# WW (99 ratio), 10.02 ribeye (111 ratio), 3.24 IMF and .07 fat thickness (43 ratio). Harmony’s dam, JOB DANELL Jazzy 15C, a 10-year-old still active dam with a performance record of 98 BW ratio on 9 calves, 102 YW ratio on 9 calves, 105 Ribeye ratio on 5 calves, and a 3.48 IMF on 5 calves (90 ratio). Jagger’s sire, JOB DANELL Kickstart 65K, is a Gelbvieh Balancer AI sire with calving ease (96 ratio on 33 calves), WW (99 ratio on 33 calves), YW (102 ratio on 11 calves), Ribeye (106 ratio on 9 calves), and marbling (101 ratio on 9 calves). I would recommend this AI sire for use in anyone’s herd – he will improve foot scores, carcass traits, calving ease, and FPI. Kickstart scanned a 16.81 ribeye (116 ratio), a 4.737 IMF (131 ratio), and .20 fat thickness (91 ratio).

Jagger’s own bragging rights include Top 4% for $ gain, Top 10% CED & HP, Top 30% Docility, Ribeye, & Milk, and Top 40% Marbling. Jagger is an easy-going bull on a moderate frame with a big hip, clean front, and big scrotal. He is an outcross bull that is a herdsire prospect.

Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled 92% Purebred Gelbvieh heifer/cow bull with an 84# birthweight, a nearly perfect (5.5 claw/5 heel) foot score, and a 6 for Tenderness!

USA’s dam, JOB DANELL Ashley 33H, a 5-year-old dam that has had 4 bull calves, 3 of which made our bull sales. Ashley has a great performance record – 96 BW ratio on 4 calves, 101 WW ratio on 4 calves, 102 YW ratio on 2 calves, and 103 ribeye ratio on 2 calves. Consistency is a great tool to use in selecting bulls and this mama has that.

USA’s sire, JKGF All American J109, has proven himself to give calving ease with great growth and exceptional carcass traits.

USA has an exceptional set of EPDs – Top 4% Marbling, Top 10% PG30 & TPI, Top 15% CED, CEM, HP, & FPI, and Top 30% & 35% in WW, Scrotal, & CERY. His genetics are as sound as you can get, coming from a proven dam and sire, and a great spread from an 84# birthweight (95 ratio) to a 742# weaning weight (101 ratio) and 1274# yearling weight (103 ratio)! He is wide-topped, big-hipped, smooth-made, and easy-going with a 42 cm scrotal – a bull that will make great replacement heifers.

He has a good disposition and is very stylish – clean fronted, good spring of rib, good hipped, and (if you are looking for a high percentage Angus heifer/cow bull) at 73% Angus, here he is!

Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled 67% Gelbvieh Balancer cow bull with an 89# birthweight, a (6 claw/5.5 heel) foot score, and an 8 for Tenderness! Full Start’s dam, JOB DANELL Full Moon 63D, is a beautifully uddered Dam of Distinction (only 1.1% achieve Dam of Distinction in the breed) with a 102 BW ratio on 8 calves, 101 YW ratio on 2 calves, 91 Ribeye ratio on 2 calves, and 122 Marbling ratio on 2 calves! Full Moon doesn’t usually give us a bull calf, but has put some beautiful replacement heifers in our herd.

Full Start’s sire, JOB DANELL Kickstart 65K, is a calving ease sire with good growth that has produced some of the most clean-fronted bulls & heifers that have made the bull sale or stayed in the herd. Kickstart has a great performance record with a 96 BW ratio on 33 calves, 99 WW ratio on 33 calves, 102 YW ratio on 11 calves, 106 Ribeye ratio on 9 calves, and 101 Marbling ratio on 9 calves! Kickstart is an AI sire with semen for sale at Bull Barn Genetics that I would strongly suggest you use on heifers and/or cows for improving CE, BW, and most importantly carcass traits.

Full Start is about breed average for growth, but in the Top 2% for Ribeye, Top 10% for Marbling, Top 1% for Yield Grade, and Top 10% for $Gain! As I have stressed in the past, getting that buyer to buy your calves the next year you have to have good growth –but pay attention to getting them to grade choice and they will come back next year. This long-made, cleanfronted cow bull will work for anybody’s program.

Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled 33% Gelbvieh Balancer heifer/cow bull with an 85# birthweight, a nearly perfect (5.5 claw/5 heel) foot score, and a 7 for Tenderness!

Charm’s dam, JOB DANELL Orchard 26K, a 3-yearold female that put her first heifer calf into a registered herd and now here is her second calf, Charm, in the bull sale! This is the kind of performance we like to see in our young cows. Orchard’s dam, JOB DANELL Orchid 30A, is a Dam of Distinction which only 1.1% achieve in the Gelbvieh breed!

Charm’s sire, S Armstrong 1149, a proven purebred Angus sire with over 2000 calves reported on birthweight. We used this sire because of his moderate CED & BW, and Docility EPD of 31 (Top 5% of the Angus breed), his feet scored in the Top 15% claw and Top 3% heel angle, and incredible carcass traits – CW Top 10%, Marbling Top 40%, Ribeye Top 30%, and Fat Thickness Top 20%. We had 2 Armstrong calves this year – the other being a 84# heifer with a 745# WW (111 ratio), JOB DANELL Glossy 10N, sold into a registered herd as one of our Top heifers.

Charm is another very long-made bull with a good disposition and easy on the eyes. He has an incredible set of EPDs – WW & PG30 Top 5%, YW, FT, MPI, FPI, & EPI Top 10%, CEM, CW, & Marbling Top 15%, CED & BW Top 35%. Archie’s dam, JOB DANELL Moonshine 71J, is a great uddered young female. She is the last natural calf from our great donor dam, JOB DANELL Moonshadow 30T, a 14-year-old Dam of Distinction (only 1.1% achieve this) that maintained a perfect udder her entire life and put many replacement heifers in our herd.

Archie’s sire, JOB DANELL Monarch 43L, an AI sire that has good calving ease & growth with breed average Milk, great CEM, HP, PG30, Docility, & Scrotal EPDs. Homozygous Black, Homozygous Polled 38% Gelbvieh Balancer with a 95# birthweight, a (6.5 claw/6 heel) foot score, and a 9 for Tenderness!

Denali’s dam, JOB DANELL Danielle 67E, has a great performance record: 97 BW ratio (6 calves), 100 WW ratio (6 calves), 101 YW ratio (3 calves), 104 Ribeye ratio (3 calves), and 109 Marbling ratio (3 calves)! She keeps producing top performing calves that are very cleanfronted and long-made.

Denali’s sire, JOB DANELL Monarch 43L, is an exceptional AI sire that we used because of his CE, CEM, negative birthweight, moderate growth, milk, PG30, and carcass traits – all of Monarch’s carcass EPDs are in the Top 35% or better! Monarch’s dam, JOB DANELL Butterfly 53G, has a beautiful udder and great feet, and his sire, JOB DANELL Pay Pal 12H, puts growth in his calves.

Denali is a long-made, smooth-necked, bighipped, and big scrotal bull that works in anyone’s herd! He has a 784# WW (106 ratio), 1318# YW (107 ratio), 14.5” Ribeye (108 ratio), and 2.7 IMF (110 ratio)! He should produce excellent replacement females. This bull is one I would use in my herd to produce progeny that are long-made, long-necked, and very cleanfronted with great growth & carcass – the traits that make you money! Take this guy home – he will pay for himself!

Homozygous Black (and solid black), Homozygous Polled 46% Gelbvieh Balancer heifer/cow bull with an 82# birthweight (95 ratio), a nearly perfect (5.5 claw/5.5 heel) foot score, with a Tenderness of 7!

Moonlit’s dam, JOB DANELL Moonlight 43B, is one of my favorite cows from my absolutely favorite cow family – the JOB DANELL Moonshadow 30T family! Moonlight has a beautiful udder and is a Dam of Distinction! Her performance record is 98 BW ratio (10 calves), 104 WW ratio (10 calves), 103 YW ratio (7 calves), 99 Ribeye ratio (7 calves), and 96 Marbling ratio (3.786 average on 7 calves)!

Moonlit’s sire, JOB DANELL Monarch 43L, is longmade, clean-fronted, and clean-sheathed with near perfect feet (5 claw/5.5 heel) and good calving ease, birthweight, & growth EPDs with carcass traits all in the Top 30%!

Moonlit is a very long-made bull on a larger frame with a good hip and wide top. I do not understand how Moonlit can have such low growth EPDs with a 750# WW (102 ratio) and a 1226# YW (99 ratio)!

(Thank you, once again, to those wonderful genomically enhanced EPDs!) Because of the breeding going back many generations on both sides, this is a bull I would highly recommend for anyone’s herd – registered and/or commercial. He should produce great replacement females, bull and steer calves that grow well and grade Choice. His ultrasound results are incredible – 15.67 Ribeye (116 ratio), 2.88 IMF (116 ratio), and a .17 FT (72 ratio)! I feel he would work well on heifers and cows – buy with confidence!

J.D.’s dam, JOB DANELL Jody 31K ET, is another young female with a bright future – 99 BW ratio (2 calves), 100 WW ratio ( 2 calves), 106 YW ratio (1 calf), 108 Ribeye ratio (1 calf), and a 91 Marbling ratio (4.66 actual IMF – almost unheard of in a 99.9% Purebred Gelbvieh)!

Jody is an embryo calf out of JOB DANELL Josephine 33C, the dam of JOB DANELL Pay Pal 12H (one of the most money-making sires in the breed)!

J.D.’s sire, JKGF All American J109, has worked well in our herd producing some great bulls & females. Some of the reasons we used him include his great calving ease & growth, along with CEM, HP, PG30, exceptional carcass traits, and style!

J.D. is a herdsire prospect with heifer and cow breed-leading numbers and he scored a 5.5 claw/5.5 heel nearly perfect foot score. He is a moderate-framed, big-hipped bull with a good spring of rib. His EPD profile shows great CED, BW, WW, CEM, HP, PG30, Stayability, Ribeye, Marbling, FPI, & TPI all within the Top 35% or better and a 39 cm scrotal measurement! Again, he should put replacements in your heifer pen and calves that weigh up.

Homozygous Black (and solid black), Homozygous Polled 47% Gelbvieh Balancer with a 95# birthweight, a nearly perfect (5.5 claw/5 heel) foot score, and a 4 for Tenderness!

Gandhi’s dam, JOB DANELL Zen 22J, a 4-year-old that has been a good producer with a great udder, sound feet, and is easy going. She produces moderate-framed calves that grow and females that should stay in your herd.

Gandhi’s sire, JOB DANELL Monarch 43L, is a clean-fronted, clean-sheathed bull with near perfect feet (5.5 claw/5.5 heel), moderate CE, BW, WW, & YW, and excellent carcass traits.

Gandhi has a near perfect 5.5 claw/5 heel foot score (with 5/5 being perfect), a 38 cm scrotal, and a great 3.9 average daily gain! He will produce those heifer calves that stay in your herd. He is one of my favorites and his ultrasound results are some of the best with a 14.3 Ribeye (106 ratio) and a 2.8 IMF (114 ratio)! He is a very clean-fronted, longmade, wide-hipped, easy-going cow bull that will work well in anyone’s herd.

Eternal’s dam, JOB DANELL Everlasting 24F, is a tried and proven dam – 100 BW ratio (6 calves) and 102 WW ratio (6 calves) with a good udder and sound feet. Her sire, Plattemere Weigh Up K360, is a well-known Angus AI sire that has worked well in our program.

Eternal’s sire, K C F Bennett Exponential G101, was selected as an Angus AI sire because of CED Top 20%, WW & YW Top 15%, great foot scores (claw - Top 30%, heel – Top 20%), CW Top 10%, Marbling Top 15%, Ribeye Top 30%, and FT Top 10% (-.26) – and he is a proven sire.

Eternal shows CED & BW EPDs on his dam’s and sire’s side, along with his own EPDs that would show him to be a great Purebred Angus heifer bull, but - with his 91# birthweight, I would be cautious and recommend him as a cow bull with great calving ease, exceptional growth (YW Top 1%), and great carcass traits (CW, Marbling, $GAIN, FPI, & TPI – all Top 1%)! He is easy-going, moderate-framed, and big-hipped with exceptional Angus sires in his pedigree –Sitz Upward 307R, Casino Bomber N33, Plattemere Weigh Up K360, and Connealy Lead On. Step Up’s dam, JOB DANELL Upbeat 35D, is a 9-year-old Purebred Angus Dam of Distinction sired by SITZ Upward 307R. She has produced several good females that went into other herds, and her only other bull calf went to work in an Angus herd. Her performance shows a 103 BW ratio (8 calves),104 WW ratio (8 calves), 101 YW ratio (8 calves), 91 Ribeye ratio (4 calves), & 111 Marbling ratio (4 calves)!

Step Up’s sire, JOB DANELL Monarch 43L, was our cleanup bull that is an AI Sire and has 7 Top bull calves in this sale. He will work in your herd, whether registered or commercial.

Step Up is a long-made bull on a moderate frame and is a clean-fronted, clean-sheathed, easy-going cow bull with a big scrotal and an above average Milk EPD. The fact that he had a 708# weaning weight (96 ratio) is incredible since his dam died of an injury in early August and he was on his own in our mountain pasture until we weaned. If you are looking for a low percentage Gelbvieh, high percentage Angus bull that will produce calves that grow and females that stay in your herd, Step Up will do the job.

MATERNAL TRAITS

Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Docility (DOC): Is reported as a percentage, with higher numbers indicating a higher percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

Scrotal circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring.

GROWTH TRAITS

Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Mature Weight: Body weight of cows adjusted to six years of age at body condition score 5. MWT is reported in pounds and is computed from a genetic model that leverages information from weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and mature weights of cows. Reported weights are adjusted for both age at observation and for body condition. Body weights of cows 2 to 12 years of age are utilized in the evaluation so producers can report data at any age for the evaluation. Preferably, cows should be evaluated at or shortly following weaning, as that’s a convenient time for many producers to process cows. Weight collected at other times in the production cycle are acceptable. Producers should measure full contemporary groups on the same day as the observation date, which helps form the contemporary group.

CARCASS TRAITS

Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye area (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Fat (CFAT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

EFFICIENCY TRAITS

Dry matter intake (DMI): The genetic difference in pounds of expected average daily dry matter intake of progeny.

Cow Energy Requirement-Yearly (CERY): Mature body weight, lactation potential and birth weight are primary predictors of energy requirements. Mature Weight, Milk and Birth Weight EPD are utilized to inform prediction equations from beef cow nutrition research to estimate differences in energy requirement over a production year. The CERY EPD is reported in pounds of Total Digestable Nutrients (TDN) required for an age 6 cow.

INDEXES

Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Maternal Profit Index (MPI): In this production scenario, Gelbvieh bulls are mated to Angus-based cows with surplus calves marketed at weaning, with replacement heifers retained from the calf crop. EPDs weighted in this index are Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM), Weaning Weight (WW), Milk (MILK), Mature Weight (MWT), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), Stayability (STAY), and Heifer Pregnancy (HP). Mature weight is the primary driver and represents the significant cost of maintenance energy requirement in the cow-calf sector. Weaning Weight and Milk (expressed in pounds of calf weaning weight) represent the principal revenue stream. Stayability helps account for differences in replacement costs in the system and the effect of heifer retention on revenue streams. This index should be used by commercial cattlemen whose production scenario includes the traditional marketing of calves at weaning and replacement retention from the herd.

Feeder Profit Index™ (FPI™): Envisioned as a completely terminal index, FPI assumes all calves are marketed as finished beef carcasses priced on a value-based grid. Thus, it shouldn’t be used in production scenarios where replacements are kept from these matings. The new FPI formulation more precisely weights Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs) available for selection, including the key carcass traits of Carcass Weight (CW), Ribeye Area (REA), and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) that were not included in the original formulation. The new FPI also weights Fat Thickness (CFAT), post-weaning Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Calving Ease Direct (CED). Carcass value determined by carcass weight, quality, and yield grade influencing traits accounts for approximately 75% of the index as principal revenue drivers. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) captures differences in expected costs to the terminal carcass endpoint.

Total Profit Index (TPI): Combining replacement female retention from the herd with carcass endpoint for marketed surplus heifers and all steers, TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. Because of the challenges faced by commercial cattlemen by the antagonisms in selection for this production scenario, TPI includes the largest and most diverse set of EPDs in the model, including carcass traits as the primary revenue drivers with cow Mature Weight (MWT), Stayability (STAY) and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) as cost drivers.

$GAIN: Reports the difference in expected marginal value of gain less the cost of feed to achieve that gain. Reported in dollars of marginal profit with more positive values representing increased efficiency and profit.
