y father always said that we judge a bull by the daughters he leaves in our herd. That usually takes ten or more years to know for sure. If you would like to increase your odds on purchasing a good bull, it is a necessity that you buy bulls that have many good bulls and good dams in their ancestral pedigree. Sires and dams that have proven over time that they will produce functional, trouble free cattle increases the odds of getting the results you would like to see. The fuller the pedigree is with these types, the odds dramatically increase on getting the results you need. This is nothing new, people have known this for generations. It is only in modern history that it has become popular to breed on numbers. It is no surprise that those types of cattle have lost the functional traits needed in order to keep them in production.

Our family is not new to the changes in the cattle business. My family has been raising registered Angus for over 60 years and we have seen many fads come and go. It is not unusual that mainstream registered breeders have always sought out the most in whatever is popular at that moment. My father taught me many years ago that any time a person puts too much emphasis on one trait then something else important is lost. So life is too short to make too many mistakes in the cattle business. I will never forget this great advice. So what you will find at Diamond D Angus is not extreme in anything, except, EXTREMELY FUNCTIONAL. I understand that balanced is not flashy or even popular. Balance is and will always be what most commercial cattle producers need. You will hear a lot of seed stock producers claim they are about balance, and to show proof they will point to the EPD numbers. In the past, EPD numbers have measured terminal traits. Nothing wrong with terminal traits, however the people doing this will also try to make you believe they are maternal. Most terminal traits are antagonistic to maternal traits. For the first time ever we are going to a 100 percent online sale as well as a new sale date. Bidding will start December 11, and continue until December 13, all details will be outlined in this catalog. By no means are we discouraging visitors to our ranch. Hopefully it will give me more oneon-one time with individual customers. We are very proud of our cow herd and would love to show anyone that would like to look. Our forage developed, long yearling bulls represent fertility and durability. Most were conceived in the first heat cycle and all were developed on grass hay, salt and mineral. We don’t hide shortcomings behind concentrate feed, foot trimming or hair spray. We demand fertility, good feet, soft temperament, good scrotal and eye appeal. Since the majority of our customers are commercial producers, these bulls are bred and developed for real world conditions. Their daughters will become some of your favorite cows. The bulls offered this year are a result of multi-sire breeding group, and DNA tested for parentage. We are not against AI breeding; however the advantages to this type of system are undeniable. We ran about 375 pairs with 11 bulls this last summer. Only the strongest, most fertile bulls will pass on their genetics. We left bulls in for 50 days and opens have always been eliminated from the herd. This is how most commercial cattle producers run their breeding programs. I feel very strongly that in most purebred operations they use bulls that have never seen a cow. No one has any idea about the ability of breeding in the real world. After many generations of using the next bull of the month are they losing the ability for natural service? For the past two summers we moved cows and temporary fence daily. No question about the benefits to the land, grass and genetics. Here at Diamond D Angus we are moving to a year around grazing system and do very little hay feeding to cows. With extremely dry conditions we had this past summer, this could prove to be more of a challenge than I had hoped. We may have to supplement a little hay for about 60 to 90 days. We will never feed more than 15 pounds per head per day. This is substantially less than one ton per cow to get through the winter in northern Montana. Many seed stock producers are at 4 or even 5 ton per cow. In order for commercial producers to raise efficient, trouble free, fertile females it is necessary to buy from a seed stock producer that runs cows and challenges them in this type of system.

Wintering charges will apply if you decide to have Diamond D Angus winter your bulls. If you want to have your bull or bulls delivered fall of 2021 you will have the option of buying insurance or not. If you would like Diamond D Angus to winter your bull or bulls insurance will be required. Details of our wintering policy are outlined underneath that subhead which appears on this page.. Method 2 You will be required to pay a nonrefundable 50% of purchase price on your bull or bulls. The balance owed, including wintering charges will be required at time of delivery. Wintering Arrangements

Your bulls may be wintered at Diamond D Angus until the end Canadian Delivery COVID will not effect cattle moving into Canada. Cattle will be of April at the cost of $4.50 per head/per day, payable upon delivered via Sweet Grass. Diamond D Angus will pay half the delivery or pick up. cost of the health papers on animals sold into Canada.

Sale Day Information 2/3 Interest & Full Possession Diamond D Angus is retaining one-third revenue sharing semen interest on every bull selling in this sale. Full possession and full salvage value sells on all bulls. Diamond D Angus will contact the new owner if they would like to collect semen and it will be done at the new owner’s convenience, and Diamond D Angus’ expense.

Great Falls is served by Delta, Horizon and Northwest Airlines. Great Falls is about an hour and a half from Diamond D Angus. Available if you would like to come and look at the cattle.

If you want to produce cows that will last a long time, it is important to use bulls from a herd that has cows that have a proven record of calving every year on time for 10 or more calves. We cull our herd for udder quality and temperament and refuse to trim feet. If an animal needs feet trimmed, we eliminate it. Most pure-bred producers will make excuses for the problems you see on their cattle. The reality is almost everything you see is a result of genetics. When you listen to a producer talk mostly about performance and EPD numbers, chances are they have left most functional traits behind and the genetics will not last for very many years.

Performance Information Line Breeding In the notes of all the bulls selling, we talked about pedigrees in hopes of helping our customers understand our breeding program. We strongly believe that our customers greatly benefit from buying linebred bulls. The benefits include: 1. If you like what you see in a bull or cow family, by line breeding it intensifies these traits. A line-bred bull will breed more true to himself than a non-line bred bull. 2. Line breeding intensifies all traits, good and bad. If genetically there were a problem, it would show up in our herd. We would identify the problem and eliminate the use of these traits. 3. The cows and bulls that we have talked about in the notes have already gone through many generations of line breeding and put through a very rigid test. To pass the test they need to be of moderate frame, easy fleshing, adequate performance, structurally correct, and good udder quality. The bulls must be very masculine.

Cows That Last a Long Time... Cow/Calf Ratio We calculate adjusted wean efficiency for each cow/calf pair. Adjusted wean efficiency is computed as the ratio of calf’s adjusted 205 day weight to the cows adjusted weight. The adjusted cow weight is estimated by a process of rating each cow’s body condition and giving her a score. A score of “5” is the median (no adjustment taken), 80 pounds is subtracted from her weight for a score of “6” and 80 pounds is added to her weight for a score of “4”. By adjusting cow weights to equal body condition scores, it rewards cows that produce a bigger calf while maintaining her own body condition. Adjusted cow/calf ratio is shown for each sale bull in the catalog.

Beef Image Analysis (BIA) Ultrasound BIA live animal carcass ultrasound is an automated, chute-side software system that captures images and calculates trait measurements on an objective basis. The traits determined by BIA ultrasound software are:

Temperament & Udder Scores

Diamond D Angus feels it’s very important to record temperament and udder scores. There are no EPDs on some of these very important traits. Considering the safety of the crew and the ease of handling the cattle, we feel it’s well worth our time to score and cull the animals that don’t meet the standards we have set. The performance, efficiency, and meat quality will improve with docile cattle. There is no such thing as a perfect cow, and you have to decide which traits you want or need. Many years ago we started a program of keeping records on the temperament and udder qualities of our females. We score them from 1 to 5 in each category. Each of our sale bulls was given a score for his dam’s udder at time of birth. This and a score for his temperament are listed with each bull’s data .

Ultrasound Explanation

Udder Score 1 – Very good. 4 – Capable of raising a calf. 2 – Above average. 5 – A non functional animal. 3 – Average. Temperament Score 1 – Calm. 4 – Continuous vigorous movement. 2 – Slightly restless, shifting. 5 – Berserk, rearing twisting 3 – Squirming & occasionally shaking the squeeze chute.

Ribeye Shape Score (Shape) Indicative of desired shape of the ribeye muscle. Correlated to eventual Yield Grade, Cutability, and % Retail Product. Score ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. Acceptable score is 0.35 or greater. Ideal score is 0.50 or greater.

Tenderness Score (Tend) Correlated to actual Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WB) in carcass ribeye steak at 12th rib location. Correlation Coefficients between WB and TEND currently average 0.85 – 0.87. Score ranges from 10-50.

10 – Very Tender 20 – Tender 30 – Slightly Tender

40 – Slightly Tough 50 – Tough

Ideal score is 25 or less. Acceptable score in yearling bulls is 28 or less.

Stress Score (Stress) Correlated to immune system strength of calf. Score ranges from 10-50.

10 – No Stress 40 –Moderate Stress 20 –Slight Stress 50 –Severe Stress 30 –Slightly Moderate Stress

Stress score impacts DTF, ADG, WDA, TCOG, Health Costs, QG, and YG. Ideal score is 20 or less.

HOW THIS SALE CLOSE WORKS The Diamond D Angus online auction will close with horse race style bidding or extended bidding. This means that when the online auction event comes to its scheduled end time there will be 5 more minutes of extended bidding. If bidding continues the sale will stay open until there is a 5-minute stretch with no bidding on any lot. Once there is a full 5 minutes with no bidding on any lot, the whole event will close. Sire to DDA Pondera 10U The DDA Pondera 10U is a bull that was sold at our 2018 sale and we had the opportunity of buying him back. He has grown into one of my favorite herd sires. He was a younger and smaller bull that I threw into the multi sire breeding group that ended up siring many calves. This tells me a lot about a bull when he is capable of that. He has Lodge of Wye in his pedigree many times. Also mother to our great DDA Galetea 859 who is mother to a herd bull we used heavily for multiple years, DDA Great Plains 57R. Every time I look at our 29R, I have to say WOW. He is very correct, very masculine, very soft temperament to people and very completive in the breeding pasture. His mother was a flawless DDA Emblazon 27C daughter, who was almost perfect on udder quality. On the dam side of this great pedigree is our Sandy cow family. This is the same as our DDA Sandy 404 cow who is in many of our great maternal pedigrees. Unfortunately this summer it appears as he broke his tool. I have not had him checked at this point, but it is a tough job that we ask our herd sires to do and it is not unusual to have some of our favorite sires injured. Mother to 77U It is sometimes interesting to see what sires rise to the top of our multi sire breeding group. To no surprise the DDA Great Plains 77U has passed the test. His mother is a full sister to our great DDA Lodge E5H. Of course she is out of our DDA Melisa 824, also the mother to DDA Emblazon 27C. For anyone that has studied our program know that the 824 cow is in almost every pedigree we own, many multiple times. She was that good of a cow. For those of you that know the OCC program well many say the OCC Great Plains 943G is the best cow maker to ever come from that famous program. I was visiting with one of our customers, Linda Lawrence. She was telling me about the 91N bull that she purchased from us in 2015. She said he had earned his worth while breeding in mountains of Wyoming. He spent summers breeding cows at 8,000 feet and always came home in good condition. His feet were in almost perfect condition. After our phone conversation I decided to look at his pedigree. The 91N bull’s sire DDA Pinebank 50H. His dam is a good 21X daughter, who is still in production now at 15 years old. So I made another call and made her an offer to buy the DDA Athabasca 91N back. No doubt it was the right decision. The Pinebank SE 10D is a ¾ brother to our 9D who were both bought from Sustainable Genetics. The 10D sired the most calves in this calf crop. This tells me that he was the most fertile and most aggressive sire we had in our multi sire breeding group. He has great depth and perfect feet. We feel many cattle in general have been bred for that perfect EPD number and the functional traits largely ignored, so feet have suffered greatly in many herds. One of my greatest regrets in recent years is not getting a photo of the DDA Sandy 931, she was a flawless DDA Emblazon 27 C daughter. That makes the DDA Sandy 1107 line bred to our great DDA Melisa 824. That gives me a goal to at least get a good photo of the DDA Sandy 1107, a daughter still in production at 10 years old. We do have good photos of a son we used heavily, DDA Blue Print 29R. Due to the fact DDA Tina 720 is a young 4 year old 21X daughter she will undoubtedly turn into a very good cow. After visiting the Pinebank herd in New Zealand many years ago, I liked most of the cattle I saw. I also believe in their ruthless criteria that they have chosen their genetics. One thing that really impressed me is the number of old granny cows they had. The mother to Pinebank SE 9D and 10D are the same cow. She was a cow that I remember well. If you would like to raise great mother cows, it would be hard to go wrong here. The Pinebank SE 10D and 9D are at least ¾ brothers. When I was in New Zealand, his mother was my favorite cow. In order to increase the likelihood of producing good, trouble free, long lasting females, it is necessary to use genetics that have a long history of doing just that. There are few herds in the world that have been doing it as long as Diamond D Angus has. For many years it was not fashionable. To say the least it was difficult through the 90s to sell our philosophy. I am very glad we did not waver. I see DDA Sandy 931, DDA Emblazon 27C, PBC 707 1M F0203, Shoshone 130 and back to Fahre, Bear, Bartor and our 580/368 cow family all in this pedigree.

This is another one of those “wow” pedigrees. We gave him “very good” across the board on our critique list. The 91N froze his testicles last winter, so we will not have any more natural calves from him. Thank God we have a little in the tank. You will see his influence for many years. The DDA Athabasca 158X has a mother who is a full sister to our DDA Lodge E5H. Her sire is a bull we sold into Australia and there will never be many offspring.

I see Hyland BC 0668 in this three generation great pedigree twice. Many of the other great cow makers are also there DDA B&T goes to our DDA Sandy cow family. The DDA Kerry 365 to our DDA Melisa 824 multiple times. On the very bottom of pedigree is our DDA Lola 778 who goes again to 27C and Melisa 824 along with 580/368 cow family multiple times. DDA Hodge 161X is a line bred Lodge of Wye. We have lined up Lodge of Wye many times and have never seen any problems. There needs to be more of this in pedigrees, not less. When I see cows born in the 90s and bulls born in the 60s in a 3 generation pedigree does anyone question the amount of proven longevity and function put into this herd. Unfortunately we lost the DDA Magnum 40M at a relatively young age due to injury. We had multiple visitors comment that he may have been the most correct bull they had ever seen. I also see our DDA Hana 940 in this good pedigree. She is the mother of two different sires we are using now. The Hodge 202X ended up with a number that does not match his birth date. This is a bull that if you have been thinking about Pinebank genetics, he is ¾ bred Pinebank. No question about feet quality, depth and length of body, or fertility. The Pinebank herd was feeding forage only before it was even thought of here in the USA. The grandmother DDA Gretta 009 is still in production at the age of 12 years old. She is a Hyland BC 0668 who is sire to some of our favorite cows.
