From Beethoven to Kennedy Barbie – inside the WSO’s House reopens! 2026/27 concert lineup
F
or many Winnipeggers, going to the symphony is about more than just the music. It is the ritual of an evening out. It is dinner before the concert, spotting familiar faces in the lobby, flipping through the program while the orchestra tunes, and hearing that first live note fill the hall. And for others, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has become something newer, a film night with the family, a Thursday concert with friends, or a chance to hear favourite music performed live in a more informal setting. The WSO’s newly announced 2026/27 season leans into all of those experiences. From Beethoven to Barbie, the upcoming season reflects how audiences enjoy music today. Some people come for the great classical works they have loved for years. Others come for movie nights, Broadway music, holiday concerts, or familiar songs performed by a full orchestra. There are many ways to enjoy the symphony, and audiences are increasingly choosing the experience that fits them best. The politics of unity and unpacking authoritarianism Marianne Cerilli

theme of my social innovation work is The Politics of Unity. After a career in education, politics and community development, I have many learning activities, tools, and resources on my website for a more trauma informed politics that also applies what we know about conflict and conflict resolution, all
to address the rise in authoritarianism and strong-man politics. It is not only a problem south of the border, there is also everyday authoritarianism here, that once acknowledged can’t be unseen. For example, recently in a drop-in City of Winnipeg fitness class an instructor wanted to start barring latecomers from entering the class. She said it was about safely and -warming up, also she didn’t like the class being
interrupted, perhaps seeing this as not being respected or in control. This is a case study for how authority and punitive enforcement of rules create disadvantage and exclusion for some, that in extreme cases becomes fascism. Rules don’t have to be explicitly discriminatory, to discriminate. In the case of our fitness class the rule did not say “working mothers with young u 5 ‘politics of unity'

ell, after 10 years of meetings, presentations to Ministers, written proposals, and dozens of letters, we are so pleased to be able to tell you that our efforts have met with success: a tearoom operation at Kennedy House will reopen soon. A quick recap: The Kennedy House Renewal Committee was formed by the Board of Red River North Tourism in 2016, soon after closure of the House by the provincial government due to structural concerns. The RM of St. Andrews supported our ideas and passed a resolution to allow the Committee to advocate for the House on behalf of Council. It took several years to convince the government of the day that this structure was an economic boon to the region as well as a critically important part of area history. Repairs and upgrades to bring the facility up to code were done in phases. We were graciously invited to witness much of the refurbishment by u
