here is an impression that the Senate does nothing and is just an endless drag around the necks of Canadians. I disagree. The Chamber of Sober Second Thought actually fulfills that commitment and then some, taking up new initiatives as well as reviewing legislation. Here are a few excerpts from the latest report that will give you just a glimpse into some of the work they do. Wildfire preparedness The committee learned that no single authority is responsible for wildfire preparedness, response and recovery in Canada. Provinces and territories manage wildfire suppression; federal departments provide emergency coordination, scientific advice and funding. Municipalities struggle with limited resources including adequate evacuation support and training for firefighters. Coordination challenges contribute directly to delayed response times, inconsistent planning, uneven access to equipment and personnel and a system that mobilizes only once a disaster is already underway, none of which are moving at the speed of the

The Charter came to Winnipeg thanks to the generosity of the Weston and Thomson families who bought it for $18 million as a gift to donate to the Manitoba Museum, the Archives of Manitoba, the Canadian Museum of History and the Royal Ontario Museum. here is a world of adventure in Manitoba. So many of us never get to experience it. Do I sound like a travelogue? When I think of Manitoba, I feel like a travelogue – an enthusiastic one. This year, instead of spending our money on some far-off destination. Why not take a tour of Manitoba? Not only will you discover awesome things you never imagined, but your kids will get an education that they will cherish forever. And you will be doing our economy an enormous favour! Here is my imagined tour. You could break it up into many packages, including day trips, camping trips and two-week vacations. It takes you on an eventual journey to the far north, but lingers in the middle of Manitoba, the place where all the dreams of Manitoba’s future were begun. This land above the lakes was where commerce first happened and where the romance of a new land was woven, although eclipsed by what happened later at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine.
