The Origin of Motherâs Day âA mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can takeâ - Cardinal Mermillod Celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Motherâs Day is an occasion to celebrate the existence of a figure that most of us share in all of our lives. Mothers. Perhaps the most significant and certainly the first woman in many of our lives. Often the first to nurture and care for us as a child, the most accursedly protective, and the most loving, mothers have been a respected and even worshipped part of our world since the very birth of human life. While we might not always see eyeto-eye with them, they are always there, and remain eternally important in the lives of each and every one of us from birth til death. While the day is not directly related to ancient celebrations of motherhood and maternal bonds, or gods of mothering and care in ancient cultures - at least in Western Culture - the day nonetheless embodies the spirit and meaning shared by all of these things for millennia.
The modern Motherââs Day saw itâs unspiration in the late 19th century in the form of varied celebrations and dates such as âMotherâs Day for Peaceâ and the âMotherâs Day Proclaimationâ. However, these largely focussed upon mothers who had lost or suffered in the Civil war, and it wasnât until the beginning of the 20th that the day truly became what we know it as today. After her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis - a social activist and community organization pioneer during the American Civil War era - died in 1905, Anna Marie Jarvis insisted on making a day as a memorial to all the sacrifices and cares mothers make and give, saying that she believed a mother was âthe person who has done more for you than anyone else.â Following this, the first Motherâs Day was celebrated on May 12, 1907 at the church Reeves Jarvis had frequented when she was alive. Thanks to the efforts of her daughter, the day was recognized by all American states in 1911 and given
its modern date in 1914 by Woodrow Wilson. Motherâs Day continues to flourish today as a tradition set in stone, as well as one of the most successfully commercialized holidays of the year. Other traditional days of the past have faded into obscurity due to losing relevance in the modern world, while Motherâs Day still thrives in our age thanks to the support of the florist and greeting card industries. Although our society unfortunately brings a certain amount of commercialization to everything, it is certainly true that the original spirit of Valentineâs Day remains, with countless hugs, flowers, and messages of love exchanged each year. Even distance cannot diminish the love between parents and their children, as Motherâs Day stands as one of the most long-distance phone calls every year. As Motherâs Day approaches, make sure to show yours some love, whether through a word, hug, or gift. There is no greater source of love than the mother.
