MARCH BREAK âIf we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.â - Anne Bradstreet
Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a flood of new life as always â trees, flowers, insects, the works. Winter is finally over, and most of us are hoping the warm weather will bring good news and fortune to a world afflicted by so much stress in recent months. This cannot be more true than for our diligent students, who in the past few years have suffered inconvenience after inconvenience in their already difficult academic paths. March break is upon us, COVID-19 restrictions are waning, and itâs time to toss away the books and enjoy the warm weather and new season. Spring Break has long been considered to be a crucial part of the academic year by doctors and scholars alike, helping students relax and build their mental strength for the rest of the school year - if they arenât still hungover afterwards. There is no doubt that the partygoers themselves agree on this point. During a time in life when having fun and studying are more in conflict than ever, the break is much-welcome.
Traditionally two or three weeks long, Spring break as we now know it dates back to the 1960s. While students in the earlier, more formal school systems of the early 20th century still travelled for socialization and relaxation during this time, the first true hotspot for getaways arose when a swim club meet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida turned into a yearly party with extended festivities that lasted the entire break. Itâs more than understandable that students were in the mood for an evening of cruising the streets, drinking on the beach, and owning the town after a long term or semester of classrooms and dorms. Word of this tradition quickly spread, and by 1985 as many as 370,000 students were participating from across the country. While this trend seemed unstoppable, during the same year a series of laws and restrictions were imposed on the city, driving arrests sky high and attendance to an all-time low in the hopes of reducing crime.
It did little to dampen partygoersâ enthusiasm, however, and the hype continued to grow into modern times. Today, some of the most popular locations include South Padre Island in Texas, Panama City in Florida, and Cancun in Mexico where the lower drinking age is taken advantage of. It is estimated that more than 2 million students in the US alone attend celebrations at these beaches and lakes every year, and these numbers will only increase over time. In recent years, however, there has been an increasing effort to promote alternative spring break activities and places for students. Backpacking or taking a working holiday abroad, for instance, are said to serve as an experience outside of the norm, will positively affect mental and physical health, and stand out when applying for jobs or internships in the future. Despite this, for many people, Spring Break will always be associated with fun and letting go, and maybe thatâs how it should stay. Thanks for reading, everyone, and if you have a spring break of your own, have fun, but stay on the safe side!
