Canada Day! July 1st - or 2nd, if that day were to be a Sunday. Commemorating the independence and unification of this country, the date has been held in esteem since the three colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia merged to become a kingdom in their own right in 1867, and what is now known as the Constitution of Canada came into effect.

This year marks the country’s 153rd birthday, and like any birthday, the celebrations for the date are prepared well in advance, and the cake is baked. On this day, most businesses are closed, so people have plenty of time to party and celebrate. Where the first ‘Canada Day’ began with the tolling of bells at the Cathedral of St. James in Toronto

and fireworks, it wasn’t always known or held as it is now, however. As time passed, the date was labelled ‘Dominion Day’, given that Canada had not yet become independent of Britain until 1931 and fully until 1982. It wasn’t fully cemented in the calendar either. It even remained occasionally uncelebrated til 1958, when it began to be managed by the Canadian government as a whole, and officially recognized.

Nowadays, Ottawa alone spent over C$500 million on the one-and-a-half century milestone in 2017, gathering fireworks, lights, and parades to showcase on both national and international television. On the date, some Canadians also take the

opportunity to appreciate what Canada’s people have contributed to the world since the beginning of its prosperous history in the 16th Century when British and French colonists made first landfall upon the Atlantic Coast.

Since then, Canada has only grown in diversity and strength, coming to rest as the country with the tenth-largest economy worldwide, and the 5th highest on the democracy index for a considerable period of time. All of this rich history creates an amazing, detailed backdrop to Canada’s upcoming anniversary. It is certain that as time moves on, the country will only grow further, and shape the world around it even more than it already has with its crucial and deep influence on the west.
