However, while the meaning of the day might be clear to all, its origin is not so certain. Valentine’s Day remains shrouded in deep, complicated, and uncertain history, despite debate between countless historians, and a wide range of circulating theories. One possible origin of the ‘Day of Love’ could be the ancient Roman
festival of Lupercalia, which took place during the middle of February. Among other traditions held on this occasion, young men slapped their counterparts with animal hides and concluded by drawing the names of women from a lottery jar to decide whom they’d fall in love with. This is a world away from today, certainly - though of course, that depends on your interests. Despite this, there are many claims that say the date had no romantic significance until much later in time. In this sense, perhaps a more accurate version of the story would be the one linked to the Feast of Saint Valentine, who died on February 14th in 269. Initiated by Pope Gelasius in AD 496, the festival was deeply rooted in traditions of fertility and debauchery, and enjoyed a golden age during the 14th and 15th centuries with the Renaissance and the popularization it gave to notions of courtly, romantic love.
By the 18th century, the 14th of February had become widely recognized throughout Western Europe as a day for couples to express their love through greeting cards and confectionery— gifts affectionately called ‘Valentines’— and represented at large by the famous heart-shaped outline seen in our media today. A decorated box of chocolates in the shape of a heart was made by Cadbury in 1868 for Valentine’s Day, and thus boxes of chocolates quickly entwined themselves with the holiday. In the present day, many of these traditions are still influential, while many new ones have emerged due to modern technology. The number of valentines sent every year in the USA is estimated at 190 million, and that’s just the written or material exchange! Some couples further apart may spend time together over Facetime, and those who are close to each other will surely share many touching moments throughout the day. However, although Valentine’s Day is filled with tradition and history, its most significant and heartfelt meaning remains the appreciation of the love one shares with another. So, whoever that might be, hold them tight, grab a box of chocolates, and watch a soppy romance film. Without a doubt, you’re going to have an amazing day!
