Easter and Egg Hunting For centuries, baskets, bunnies, and eggs - whether they are chocolate or not - have been symbols of those few days in mid-April that we all know and love. But where did these traditions come from, and why do we still celebrate Easter today, so far removed from its original roots? Why specifically eggs, why rabbits, and why hunting after them both? The Date Modern Easter celebrations have their roots in the Christian festival of Pascha, which was first celebrated in the mid-2nd century. However, the date of Easter has historically been subject to some debate. During ancient times, it was a feast held during the seven days surrounding a full moon. Now, it is a public holiday celebrated in many countries on the second or third Sunday in April. With time, Easter became less and less a religious celebration, and more something to bring together families and children. Eggs and Rabbits The dates themselves are certainly influential in determining when and what Easter is for most of us. However, the traditions and celebrations associated with it aren’t limited to only that time period. Many take place weeks before

and after, and the events themselves are certainly not limited to just the days of Easter. A German folktale from the 1500s, the Osterhase, or ‘Easter Hare’, is Santa’s seasonal counterpart during the Easter season - following instructions and giving gifts to the good and the naughty children in much the same way as the ‘Naughty and Nice’ list. Apparently, the hare left eggs for children to collect before hopping off in the distance, which inspired the tradition of egg hunting as a whole. Since old times, decorating eggs and having them as ornaments or offerings of peace has been a common practice. Today’s tradition of coloring eggs arose in 1880, and in the 20th century, an old Italian tradition became a commercial success with the famous Kinder Surprise eggs. During the Easter holidays, the growing trend was utilized as a method to market to children and their parents, as is done to this day. The Hunt Egg hunting is also an aspect of German tradition, thought to have started during the late 16th century and possibly by Martin Luther himself. After her mother

had organized several such events for her as a child, Queen Victoria popularized the tradition in Britain in the 19th century, carrying the tradition to further generations. However, the eggs weren’t always chocolate, nor were the chocolates always in the form of eggs. The eggs may be from a chicken - dried, emptied, painted, or otherwise decorated - or plastic eggs filled with confetti or other such exciting objects as toys. Whether it is organized by parents, clubs, royals, or local councils, the experience begins with the adults strategically placing eggs throughout their surroundings to make them appealing to find, then allowing children to explore the surroundings at their own pace to find the eggs. Nowadays, there are eggs that emit sounds so that visually impaired children can find them, and milk-free chocolate ones, of course! So now, as Easter time approaches again this year you have a better understanding of how it became what we know it to be rich, cultural, and quite entertaining. Stay safe, don’t let the kids wander off too far in their hunt, but most importantly have fun and enjoy!
