PEAK PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK
JULIAN ROCHE #35
FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Julian Roche at Saint Martin’s University
NBA trade deadline delivers
Roche carried SFU on his back on Saturday, February 2. He finished the game with a 23-point, 10-rebound doubledouble, and was a force on the inside all night. Scoring the final basket with five seconds left was just the cherry on top of a fantastic all-around game.
What a deadline! Kristaps Porzingis going to the Mavericks, Tobias Harris going to the 76ers, Nikola Mirotic going to the Bucks and Marc Gasol going to the Raptors were the highlights in what was one of the most exciting trade deadlines in recent memory. The two best white guys in the NBA are now on the same team for the foreseeable future, and Dallas should have no problem moving on from Dirk Nowitzki. The Eastern Conference top teams all did their due diligence in gearing up for the playoffs, and we should be in for an exciting conference semifinals and finals.
In his first season for the Clan, Roche is leading the team with 14.9 points per game. He’s also leading SFU with 6.8 rebounds per game and is almost averaging a block a game (20 blocks in 21 games). What a recruit.
With a deep free agency pool featuring many stars and the Anthony Davis saga, the 2019 offseason may be even crazier.

TOP GAME NEXT WEEK
PEAK GAME OF THE WEEK
SFU men’s basketball vs. Western Washington University
SFU men’s basketball at Saint Martin’s University and vs. Northwest Nazarene University
On Tuesday, February 12, the Clan will be hosting Western Washington University at the West Gym on Burnaby Mountain. It’ll be a great test for SFU, who will be looking to keep up their strong performances of late.
We have to include two games here, because the Clan beat the (then) top team in the GNAC in back-to-back games, by just three points combined. The victory against Saint Martin’s University on February 2 came off of a go-ahead jumper by Julian Roche with five seconds left, to give SFU a 61–59 win.
Western Washington is currently one spot ahead of the Clan in the GNAC standings with a 6–7 conference record. They are led by Trevor Jasinsky, who is second in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 19.9 points per game.
Hosting Northwest Nazarene on February 7, the Clan were able to hold a second-half lead into the final minutes, and pulled off the victory after a missed three-attempt by the Nighthawks at the buzzer.
A win here would be huge for SFU to give them a chance to qualify for the playoffs. If their recent wins against top teams mean anything, it’s that they can play against anybody when the team is on.
Both wins can be seen as huge upset victories against nationally ranked opponents. SFU men’s basketball has also now matched the most wins it’s had in a season since entering the NCAA, with 11 victories this year.
