Summer 2019 Courses GSWS 205-3 Gender and Popular Culture: Showgirls: Performance, Embodiment and Sexuality Tuesdays: 14:30 – 17:20
Mary Shearman
Are erotic dancers shrewd workers or exploited by a patriarchal society? If femininity is a performance and not a ‘natural’ disposition, why is it still employed by so may people even though its history is sometimes conceived as synonymous with being oppressed? Can a feminist go-go dancer subversively use her performance to challenge the objectification of her body? This course is designed to aid students in developing analytical skills by investigating and critiquing the formal and mundane performance of femininity. This will be achieved through gaining exposure to, and comprehension of performance studies and feminist theories that address the potential of the sexualized female performer. We will look at examples from venues such as burlesque dancing, performance art, punk music, and drag culture. By the end of this course, students will be able to identify ways in which people who seek to subvert gendered power relations can utilize the prescription of femininity.
GSWS 319-4 Islamic Feminism Thursdays: 13:30 – 17:20
Itrath Syed
The idea of being at once Muslim and feminist continues to be constructed as an ontological impossibility by all sides. The combination of a hegemonic discourse that racializes Muslims as the irredeemable civilizational other, on the one hand, and the dominant patriarchal readings of Islam within Muslim discourses, on the other, threaten to render obsolete the resistant voices of Muslim women. Added to this mix is a western feminist tradition that has often objectified Muslim women as passive, infantilized and in need of being saved. And yet, Muslim women’s feminisms and their activism for social change continues to thrive despite this most inhospitable context. This course will explore the voices of contemporary Muslim feminists and examine the strategies they have employed to create a viable third space – one that is neither apologetic to patriarchy nor a pawn in shifting global political realities.
GSWS 398W-4 Feminist Currents On-line/Distance Education This course examines major ideas in post-third wave feminist writing while exploring various forms of critical and creative expression. We will focus on the following themes: third wave and postfeminist debates; activism and creativity; men, masculinity and feminism; gender variance and trans issues; critical thinking in the classroom. The writing intensive component of the course helps students develop analytical, writing, and research skills through a variety of writing assignments including blogging, exploratory writing, a group ’zine project, and a sequence of short assignments that build up to a final writing project. We will also use writing as a vehicle for reading comprehension, ideas generation, creative expression, and group communication. Students are encouraged to contribute actively to the learning environment with ideas from their own experience, practices, and visions of feminism.
