SERMON OUTLINE GENTLENESS THAT DEFUSES 2 Kings 5:1–14
“But he had leprosy…” “He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.” – 2 Kings 5:1 Naaman was powerful, but he carried a need none of his strength could overcome. When have you discovered your own strength was not enough?
1. Pride expects God to work on your terms. “I thought that he would surely come out to me…” – 2 Kings 5:11 Naaman wanted healing, but he wanted it to happen according to his ideals. Where have my expectations hardened into demands?
2. Gentleness interrupts your outrage. “Naaman’s servants went to him and said, ‘My father…’”– 2 Kings 5:13 Naaman’s servants came near, preserved his dignity, and asked a disarming question. Gentleness: • Comes near rather than criticizing from a distance • Tells the truth without humiliating • Lowers the temperature without lowering the challenge Do I want to help this person—or merely prove that I am right?
3. Grace meets you on the way down. “So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan…”– 2 Kings 5:14 Naaman came prepared to achieve something great. God invited him to receive something only grace could give. “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.” – 2 Kings 5:15 What do I need to leave on the riverbank in order to receive God’s grace?
