SERMON OUTLINE SELF-CONTROL UNDER PRESSURE John 18:1–27
When the pressure rises, where do you turn?
1. THE SWORD — FIGHT Uncontrolled Anger: I have to take control. “Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear.” – John 18:10 Under pressure, anger can make us feel powerful.
2. THE FIRE — FLIGHT Uncontrolled Fear: I have to protect myself. “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.” – John 18:17 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” – John 18:25 Under pressure, fear can make us forget who we are.
3. THE CUP — FAITH Self-Control: I can trust the Father. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. – John 18:4–5 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” – John 18:11 Jesus: “I am.” Peter: “I am not.” Under pressure, self-control is the freedom to be faithful.
