SERMON OUTLINE

JOY AS HUMBLE PRESENCE

Psalm 131

Psalm 131 is in the Song of Ascents, a curated set of Psalms that narrate a pilgrim’s journey from a faraway land back to the Temple in Jerusalem.

After the exile, the Jews migrated back to Israel to resettle their territory, including the building of a new Temple. This reconstruction was a joyful and a somber moment. (see Ezra 3:12-13) This return would have been a humbling experience.

Psalm 131:1 suggests that humility rejects the illusion of greatness.

Psalm 131:2 implores us to develop the “inner calm” needed for faithfulness.

Ultimately, Psalm 131 shows how humility leads us to be people with great hope.

Daily Dwell: November 30-December 6

“My heart is not proud, L ord , my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.” - Psalm 131:1
