SERMON OUTLINE

HEAR ME

Psalm 39

Unanswered prayers don’t bother me. What keeps me up at night is the unoffered prayer.

How to pray when you don’t feel like praying:

1. Begin with silence. Feel the weight of your words.

• I said, “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked.” So I remained utterly silent, not even saying anything good….” (v. 1-2)

2. Shift your perspective. Life’s too short for shallow prayers.

• Show me, L ord , my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. (v. 4-5)

3. Ask for mercy. Look for more than just answers.

• Hear my prayer, L ord , listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were. (v. 12)

And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. – Matthew 6:7-8

Daily Dwell: May 4-May 10

“Hear my prayer, L ord , listen to my cry for help…” - Psalm 39:12
