Coordination of the Kirkin’ by Anne Wray and Sheldon Staples

The history of the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan takes us back to the months following the battle of Culloden in 1745. After defeating the Scots in a final battle, the English Duke of Cumberland knew he needed to do something to prevent any further rebellion. He was determined that this would be the last bloodshed over the divided countries and set out to ensure a union was formed.

The Duke passed the 1746 Act of Proscription, one of the most famous laws in Scottish history. This forbade members of any Scottish Clan from wearing their tartan, playing the bagpipes, and banned other traditions relating to Scottish culture at the time. There was outcry as the Highlanders felt suppressed. With tartan and piping being their aggressive symbols of battle, taking away their ability to use these symbols sent a strong message: that the war for independence was over. Although extreme, the Duke maintained that this be the only way to effectively assimilate the Highlanders into English society.

Although they couldn’t publicly rebel anymore, the Highlanders were determined not to lose all connection with their heritage. Hiding small pieces of their tartan on their person, they used this as a small comfort to get them through the almost four decades that followed. In 1782, the Act of Proscription was repealed, and Scots were enabled to wear their clan tartans again.

In 1941, to remember this history and recognize the roots of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland, Reverend Dr. Peter Marshall, the pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. (who was originally from Coatbridge, Scotland), devised a ceremony called Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan. To this day a ceremony is held annually in many Presbyterian churches across the country.

SERMON OUTLINE

LOVE THAT NEVER ENDS

1 Corinthians 13 (NRSV)

And yet I will show you the most excellent way [a higher path]. – 1 Corinthians 12:31

1. Without Love – I Am Nothing

If not love … how to empty a gift.

Your words turn into noise. Your wisdom turns into information. Your faith turns into wishful thinking. Your giving turns into manipulation.

2. With Love – I Become Like Christ

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

We go from nothing to everything (all things). Always protects Always trusts Always hopes Always perseveres

3. Because of Love – I Live Forever

One day …

What is incomplete becomes finished. What is childish becomes mature. What is distorted becomes clear. What is hidden becomes known.

Love never ends. – 1 Corinthians 13:8
