STRIDE LA VAMPA

from Il Trovatore. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GIUSEPPE VERDI The fire roars! The restless mob runs to the fire with happy faces; Shouts of joy echo around; surrounded by killers, a woman is brought forth! Evil shines upon horrible faces beside the gloomy flame that rises to the sky!

The fire roars! The victim arrives dressed in black, disheveled, barefoot! A fierce shout of death arises; the echo repeats from hill to hill! Evil shines upon horrible faces beside the gloomy flame that rises to the sky!

EN VAIN POUR ÉVITER

from Carmen. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GEORGES BIZET Alvard Mayilyan

mezzo-soprano

Come now, let me try my turn. Diamonds, spades…death! I read it right…me first, then him…death for us both! In vain you shuffle to avoid bitter answers; it is useless—the cards are truthful and will not lie! If your page in the book above is a happy one, then shuffle and cut without fear. The card beneath your fingers will turn up joyfully, foretelling happiness. But if you are to die, if that dreaded word is written by fate, Try again twenty times—the pitiless card will repeat: Death! Again! Again! Always death! Again! In despair! Always death!

Sounds of my home country, you revive the yearning, let the tears brim in my eyes! Hearing the old-time songs, draws me back, my Hungary, to you! Oh homeland so beautiful, with the sun gleaming so bright, How green are your forests, how lush your fields, Oh countryside, where I once was happily at home! Yes, those cherished memories fill my heart to bursting, Those cherished memories! But though I am far from you now, so far, Ah, eternally consecrated to you is the yearning of my heart! Oh homeland so beautiful, with the sun gleaming so bright, How green are your forests, how lush your fields, Oh my country, where once I was happily at home! Fire, zest for life, fills the real Hungarians chest, Hay! Hurry to the dancefloor! Czárdàs can be heard! Suntaned maiden, come and dance with me; Take my arm, you dark eyed child! Thirsty customers reach for tankards, Let them go round faster and faster from hand to hand! Relish the fire in the Tokay wine! A toast to our nation! Hay! Fire, zest for life, fills the real Hungarians chest, Hey! Hurry to the dancefloor! Czárdàs can be heard!

ICH GROLLE NICHT from Dichterliebe, Op. 48. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ROBERT SCHUMANN I bear no grudge, though my heart is breaking, O love forever lost! I bear no grudge. However you gleam in diamond splendor, No ray falls in the night of your heart.

4

I’ve known that long. For I saw you in my dreams, And saw the night within your heart, And saw the serpent gnawing at your heart; I saw, my love, how pitiful you are. I bear no grudge.

soprano

I do not know the reason why to sorrow I’m inclined. A story from the olden day is preying on my mind. Light’s fading and the air is cool and quiet flows the Rhine, The mountain top’s still glowing as the sun’s last rays decline. Seated up there, gorgeous, a maid beyond compare, Her golden jewelry glitters, she combs her golden hair. She combs it with a golden comb and sings a song betimes, A song with a strange melody, with strange and powerful rhymes. The boatman in his little boat, gripped by a savage love, Does not see the rocky reef, sees only what’s above. I think the waves consumed them, boat and boatman, bye and bye. And that’s what, with her singing, was done by Lorelei.

QUE LES SONGES HEUREUX

from Philémon et Baucis. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . CHARLES GOUNOD May happy dreams hover over your heads, holding your senses charmed in a blissful slumber; May your hearts remain deaf to the voices of the storm—sleep, sleep Tomorrow, you shall know, when Dawn pours her flaming rays across the vast azure, You shall learn how the heavens take vengeance And how they reward—sleep, sleep.

VOUS QUI FAITES L’ENDORMIE

from Faust. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GOUNOD Wendel Stephens

bass

I see that my advice is not heeded and that love triumphs. But if you want the door to open in front of you, You will certainly need the help of my voice! You who pretend to sleep, do you not hear, O Catherine, my love, My voice and my footsteps?” Thus your suitor calls to you, and your heart believes him… Ah, ah, ah!… Don’t open the door, my pretty one, ‘til the ring is on your finger! My beloved Catherine, Why do you deny to your entreating lover so sweet a kiss? Thus your suitor pleads and your heart believes him!… Ah, ah, ah!… Don’t grant any kisses, my pretty one, ‘til the ring is on your finger! Ah, ah, ah!

BLACK SWAN

HEXENLIED from 12 Gesänge, Op.8. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . FELIX MENDELSSOHN Emily Nelson Swallows are flying, spring’s triumphant, Dispensing flowers for wreaths! Soon we’ll flit quietly outside, And fly to the splendid dance! A black goat, a broomstick, The furnace rake, the distaff Whisk us on our way, Like lightning and wind, Through whistling gales to the Brocken! Our coven dances round Beelzebub And kisses his claw-like hands! A ghostly throng seizes our arms, Waving firebrands as they dance!

soprano And Beelzebub Pledges the throng Of dancers gift after gift: They shall be dressed in beautiful silk And dig themselves pots full of gold! A fiery dragon flies round the roof And brings us butter and eggs: The neighbours catch sight Of the flying sparks, And cross themselves for fear of the fire. Swallows are flying, Spring’s triumphant, Flowers are blooming for wreaths. Soon we’ll flit quietly outside— Tally-ho to the splendid dance!
