aised for the first time on Parliament Hill in 1965, the Canadian flag with its distinctive maple leaf and bold red and white is recognizable around
the world. There are usually five Canadian flags flying on the hill at any given time. One flies over the Peace Tower, which is changed every day except statutory holidays and half-masting. Flags also fly on each side of the Centre Block, over the West Block and East Block. These are changed weekly and for half-masting. But visitors to Parliament Hill these days know that the Centre Block is being restored, so no flag is flying on the east side, and only four are flying for now. Every time a flag is changed, the government gives it away to a Canadian. To get one, you fill out a form online. You’d think that with all those flag changes, there would be plenty to go around. But in fact, even if you fill
