Atlanta Black Pride Weekend

20 Years of Black Joy Edited by Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Photos: ABPW

Twenty years is a milestone worth celebrating – and Atlanta Black Pride Weekend is doing exactly that. From September 2 through 7, Atlanta will once again become a gathering place for thousands of Black LGBTQIA+ people, allies, artists, advocates, and community leaders from across the country. Now marking its 20th anniversary, Atlanta Black Pride Weekend (ABPW) is bringing nearly a week of parties, performances, community programming, empowerment, health initiatives and good old-fashioned Black queer joy to the city. And yes, the lineup is giving plenty of reasons to get excited. Special appearances and performances are set to include Durand Bernarr, Saucy Santana, Summer Walker, Terrell Carter, Billy The Goat, Big Sexy, Sway McKinney, Dolly Babe, Trim, Miss Kaniyah, Sapphire, Jhonni Blaze and many more. But beneath the celebrity appearances, packed dance floors and festival fashions, Atlanta Black Pride is about something much bigger: creating a space where Black LGBTQIA+ people can see themselves, celebrate themselves and connect with one another. Why Black Pride Matters

brings together the city’s LGBTQ+ community Pride has never been a one-size-fits-all for a massive celebration that encompasses experience. This Basic Human Skill Disappeared Sometime After the Middle Ages By Dr. Zachary LaVigne, Any Spine Chiropractic & Massage Studio Watch a toddler pick something up off the floor. Knees bend, hips drop, heels stay flat, spine stays tall, and the kid just hangs out down there like it’s nothing, maybe eating a cracker. Now try it yourself. If you’re like most adults, you either can’t get your heels down, you topple backward, or your lower back rounds into a question mark before you’ve even fully descended. Somewhere between age five and adulthood, we lost a movement every human body was built to do. The full squat, feet flat, hips below the knees, isn’t a gym exercise. It’s a resting position, the same way sitting or lying down is. Anthropologist Gordon Hewes documented back in 1955 that most of the world’s cultures rest this way by default, and it’s specifically European and European-descended societies that abandoned it. Skeletal evidence backs this up. A study examining hundreds of tibia and ankle bones found clear markers of habitual squatting were common through the Middle Ages, then started disappearing as chairs became furniture rather than furniture for royalty. We didn’t evolve out of squatting. We furnished our way out of it. That matters more than it sounds like it should, because the deep squat is one of the only postures that takes the hips, knees, and ankles to full range at the same time. Researchers studying the Hadza, a hunter-gatherer community in Tanzania, found something surprising: Hadza adults spend almost as much total time “sedentary” as Americans do, but they rest in squats and kneels instead of chairs. That keeps muscles like the quads and calves under light, continuous activation even while resting, which may explain why chair-bound sitting correlates with metabolic problems that squat-resting doesn’t. A chair turns your muscles off. A squat leaves them quietly on.

There’s also a plumbing argument. When you squat, the puborectalis muscle around the rectum relaxes and the anorectal angle straightens out, which is a mechanical detail that translates to a very practical result: a landmark study had people time and rate their own bowel movements sitting versus squatting, and squatting cut the time needed nearly in half while sharply reducing how hard people had to strain. Your pelvic floor was designed with a specific posture in mind, and it isn’t the one on your toilet. None of this means you need to start eating dinner in a squat. But losing the ability to do one at all, gradually, quietly, through decades of chairs, car seats, and stiff-soled shoes, is a loss worth noticing. Tight calves and stiff hips aren’t just an inconvenience at the bottom of a squat. They’re a sign of a body that’s stopped asking certain joints to do their full job. Try this next time you’re tying your shoes or petting the dog: Drop into a squat and just stay there a minute, using a wall or counter for balance if you need it. You’re not exercising. You’re returning a favor to a body that’s been waiting for you since you were four.

The Lavender Lens

Age Is Not a Punchline By Tristan Lane for The Lavender Lens One of the more fascinating — and increasingly frustrating — aspects of modern community life is the growing number of people who wish to benefit from communities they make absolutely no meaningful investment in. They appear only when they need something: a favor, a recommendation, a connection, a client, a table filled at a function, a business promoted, or an audience delivered. Then they disappear again into silence until the next request arrives. What many people fail to understand is that real communities are not vending machines. They are ecosystems built on reciprocity, visibility, participation, consistency, and mutual support. They survive because people invest time, energy, encouragement, conversation, labor, and presence into them long before they ever need anything in return. This is particularly true in LGBTQ spaces. Historically, our bars, organizations, social groups, charities, and professional networks existed because people showed up for one another. During the AIDS epidemic, our community survived not because everyone was profitable or useful, but because reciprocity existed. People volunteered. People cooked. People fundraising. People visited hospital rooms. People carried one another emotionally and financially when governments and institutions looked away. That spirit created the modern LGBTQ community. And yet today, many people approach community spaces with a purely transactional mindset. They do not attend events. They do not engage with others. They do not support charities. They do not contribute ideas, conversation, warmth, or encouragement. But the moment they launch a business, need exposure, or want customers, suddenly the “community” becomes very important to them. It is difficult to overstate how exhausting this becomes for the people who actually do the work

of building and sustaining these spaces. Communities are not built by consumers alone. They are built by contributors. If you never support others, never engage, never participate, and never invest in the ecosystem around you, eventually people notice. Reciprocity matters. Human beings instinctively understand fairness, even in social environments. You cannot permanently withdraw from a bank account you never contribute to. This does not mean every interaction must be perfectly equal or transactional. Healthy communities thrive on generosity. But generosity itself depends on a culture where people broadly show up for one another over time. The strongest communities are rarely the wealthiest or trendiest ones. They are the ones where participation becomes culture. Where people celebrate each other’s successes, attend each other’s events, volunteer, amplify, encourage, and create an environment larger than themselves. Community is not something you consume. It is something you help build.
