The Peace Center was founded on the idea that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and over the past 25 years, this not-for-profit organization has brought hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life and all corners of the country to see the best in live entertainment.
But we couldn’t do that on our own.
Each and every year, community members reach into their pockets and generously give to the Peace Center, ensuring that lights stay on, curtains stay up, and most importantly, that the Peace Center community initiatives continue to help those that need them.
POP! (Peace Outreach Program) is our biggest initiative. With a host of educational shows, master classes and more, POP! reaches over 56,000 parents, students and teachers annually.

THE SCIENCE OF MAGIC

Levitation. Vanishing acts. The classic saw-the-assistant-in-half routine - all of these staples of stage magic have something in common… They use science. And Illusionist Bill Blagg is heading to the Peace Center to prove it.
The Science of Magic takes students behind the curtains, smoke, mirrors and screens to show how science makes the impossible, completely possible. Students will use the Scientific Method to levitate a teacher, witness mind-blowing scienceinfused illusions, and even learn how they can manipulate light and reflection to make homework disappear. This program is designed to excite, intrigue, educate, and most importantly, encourage students to start thinking “outside the box.”

Since the 70’s, Sam Abell has been documenting our world with his award-winning photos and meticulous research into American history. He’s helped trace Lewis & Clarke’s journey, covered the writing of the U.S. Constitution, and given us insight into the lives of creative giants like Lewis Carroll and Leo Tolstoy.
Now, Abell is heading to the Concert Hall stage to give audiences an in-depth look into his creative process as he snaps some of the most amazing photos this world has ever seen.

He has trouble with his girlfriend, he’s still very much under the rule of his mother and step-father, and he’s completely certain that no one will ever understand him.
Yes, Hamlet is the epitome of teenage angst, and that’s why young minds seem to connect with this play so well. Penned in 1599, Hamlet is still performed all these years later for a reason. It’s the perfect show to examine how young adults are shaped by both the confusing, everchanging world around them, and the day to day choices they are forced to make.

The story is told entirely through physical theater, illusion and music, and the set is brilliantly designed - combining twigs, leaves, feathers and shell to give audiences a first-hand look into the funny, enchanting, and sometimes bittersweet lives of three friends who also happen to be birds... Since 2008, the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has performed Goodnight Moon & The Runaway Bunny for more than 200,000 spectators across the US, Canada and around the world. Adapted from Margaret Wise Brown’s classic children’s books, Goodnight Moon celebrates the comfort of nighttime rituals, while The Runaway Bunny delights audiences with a made-up tale of a baby bunny’s journey away from home.

Joshua Bennett is a performance poet from Yonkers, NY. He has recited his original works at events and venues such as The Sundance Film Festival, The NAACP Image Awards, The Clinton Global Citizen Awards and President Obama’s Evening of Poetry and Music at the White House. His work has been published, or is forthcoming, in Drunken Boat, Muzzle, Poetry Northeast, Disability Studies Quarterly and Clarion.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Joshua graduated with the distinctions of Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude, after double majoring in English and Africana Studies. He is currently a thirdyear doctoral candidate in the English Department at Princeton University, where he concentrates primarily in the fields of black studies, disability studies, and ecocriticism. When he is not writing, reading or performing, Joshua enjoys watching the hit Cartoon Network series, Adventure Time with Finn and Jake and practicing his free throws. He currently shoots about 62% from the line. He’s working on it.

TEEN WORKSHOPS
Workshops bring professional poets from around the country to the Peace Center to share insights, tips and tricks they’ve learned throughout the years with teens.
Each workshop has a different theme, and culminates in either an Open Mic Night or Slam Poetry Competition.
Classes are a fantastic way for teens to practice written communication skills, public speaking, and to discover just how truly powerful language can be.

Paige is a multifaceted artist, who is known for her innovative fusion of poetry, hip hop, dance and education. As a master teaching artist, Paige has taught throughout the country, to all ages, in all disciplines. To date, she has reached approx. 10,000 students, from Pre-K through college, in over 100 residencies, workshops and performances. Paige is a proud member of Actors Equity Association and has performed on many stages throughout the country including DC: Arena Stage, Folger Theatre, The Kennedy Center, Fulton Theatre (PA), Ohio Theatre (NY), Manship Theatre (LA), Paramount Theatre (TX), Cleveland Playhouse (OH) and many others. She has collaborated with The Lincoln Center (NY) and was commissioned by the National New Play Network in 2012.
As a hip-hop education advocate, Paige has shaped various educational workshops, including Props for Hip Hop at Arena Stage and Keep it Moving at Wolf Trap. Both workshops help teachers to understand the fundamentals of hip-hop while incorporating the culture into their curriculum.
