WELCOME TO OUR 2016-2017 SEASON!

Let’s all take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are. Even though Greenville, South Carolina has come a long way since the Peace Center opened in 1990, many still consider it a “small” southern town. Though with the help of individual donors, corporate partners and loyal patrons –people who believe in the arts and their ability to inspire positive change within a community – the not-for-profit Peace Center operates with a big town mentality. The artists and shows that play the Peace Concert Hall, Gunter Theatre and outdoor TD Stage come from all over the world. And the breadth of shows available rival that of any of the neighboring big cities.

You see, the Peace Center provides a means to experience different cultures. Different ideas. Different art forms. Different genres. And the new, 2016-17 season continues that effort.

From Renée Fleming to Ben Folds to the Bollywood-inspired Taj Express, we’re bringing the most unique and talented artists the world has ever seen to our stages. You may not recognize all the names, and that’s okay. Maybe this is the season where you fall in love with world music. Or perhaps you’ll finally get to hear David Sedaris read his satire-caked short stories live. Either way, we challenge you to see as much as possible this season. Because it is truly amazing the Peace Center exists as a cultural center for everyone to enjoy.

THE LONE BELLOW WITH AOIFE O’DONOVAN

The Lone Bellow is one of those bands where you can hear the group’s chemistry come out in their heartfelt songs. The trio – Kanene Pipkin, Zach Williams and Brian Elmquist – are Southern-born and New York City-based, giving Lone Bellow a ton of influences to pull from when they sit down to write music.

Their sophomore album Then Came the Morning (released January, 2015), marks the bands’ first time working with their dream producer, Aaron Dessner of the National. And while the mix is amazing, it’s the voices of Kanene, Zach and Brian that truly carry this unique and soulful indie band.

Aoife O’Donovan’s sophomore album “In the Magic Hour” — which consists of 10-songs full of the singer’s honeyed vocals that Rolling Stone calls “gorgeous” — is her most introspective effort yet, an exploration of memory and mortality.

In 2013 O’Donovan released her debut solo album “Fossils” to critical acclaim. Previously she spent a decade as the lead singer of Crooked Still. And recently she has become A Prairie Home Companion, collaborating with many eminent performers from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas.

Most recently O’Donovan has lent her voice to the folk trio I’m With Her alongside Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz.

GREGG ALLMAN

Gregg Allman has always kept himself busy. He’s a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, he’s written a critically acclaimed memoir called My Cross to Bear, received a “Living Legends” Award, released Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA, a live DVD/CD of Allman performing with an eight-piece band, and now, he’s planning a new solo record.

Yes, it’s a good time to be a Gregg Allman fan, because clearly the best is yet to come.

THE WOOD BROTHERS

Chris Wood made up 1/3 of Medeski Martin and Wood, while his brother Oliver toured with Tinsley Ellis before releasing a half-dozen albums with his band King Johnson. When they came together as The Wood Brothers, their years of touring and songwriting experience quickly paid off, earning them a reputation as “Masters of Soulful Folk.”

About a decade after forming, drummer Jano Rix was added and the band was finally complete. In 2014, following the acclaimed release of The Muse The Wood Brothers dropped Paradise –considered by many to be their most sophisticated work to date.

KELLER WILLIAMS

A frequent “freeker” at giant music festivals like Bonnaroo, Keller Williams has recorded over 20 albums since the early 90s, releasing his newest album Vape last 4/20. Though many of this self-taught, one-man band’s songs are solo, Williams has been known to tour with like-minded musicians from Yonder Mountain String Band to The String Cheese Incident to Ratdog.

And with a unique blend of bluegrass, folk, hip hop, reggae, alt. rock, jazz and funk, this is one musical prodigy you absolutely need to experience live.

HIS LARGE BAND

When his debut, self-titled album released in 1986, Lyle Lovett made a name for himself in the country music world, paving the way for his sophomore record “Pontiac.” With a country music framework similar to his first album, “Pontiac” allowed Lovett to explore various genres, creating the eclectic sound he’s known for today. Since his second album he’s won Grammy’s, performed with some of the best in the business (Al Green, Randy Newman, Elvis Costello), and even spawned an acting career, appearing both on stage and in film.

Today, with his trusty Large Band by his side, Lovett continues to write, record, tour and perform, giving his fans more of the musician they love.

Though earlier writing sessions produced songs that Seal describes as “good,” he always longed to dig deeper. And it was this search for something more that caused him to concentrate on writing about the many permutations of love. Suddenly, fans were relating to his writing more than ever before. AN EVENING WITH CHRIS THILE

Multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz, and bluegrass, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike.

A child prodigy, Thile first rose to fame as a member of Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, with whom he released three albums and sold over two million records. In 2014, along with a national tour, the trio released a fourth album, A Dotted Line, their first since 2005.

As a soloist Thile has released six albums including his most recent, Bach: Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer. In February 2013 Thile won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Then, in September 2014, Thile and Meyer released their latest album collaboration, Bass + Mandolin, which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Punch Brothers released their latest album, The Phosphorescent Blues, in January 2015. In the fall of 2016, Thile will take over as host of A Prairie Home Companion, after Garrison Keillor retires from the much beloved program after over 40 years as host.

BEN FOLDS

When listening to his latest album, So There, it becomes quite clear that Ben Folds has hit a new groove in his musical career. Track after track, fans are introduced to a musician with zero restraints, making the music he wants to make and collaborating with artists of his choosing.

Folds is a genre-defying, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/ producer who began his career as the front man and pianist for the ultra-successful indie group Ben Folds Five. After they disbanded, Folds set his sights on a solo career with 2001’s Rockin’ the Suburbs, playing nearly all the instruments and collaborating with artist including “Weird Al” Yankovic and John McCrea of the band Cake. From there, Folds continued to fine tune his sound, experimenting with new genres and working with a variety of musicians and talents, from William Shatner to the chamber music group yMusic. Today, Folds continues to tour and create, giving his fans the opportunity to continue to enjoy his work the way it was meant to be enjoyed… Live.

By only eight years old, Gladys Knight’s voice found a muchdeserved spotlight with the creation of a family R&B/soul group called The Pips (later to be renamed Gladys Knight and The Pips). The group debuted their first album in 1960, with Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush harmonies and graceful choreography. Created by Edward Bilous and named one of the top 10 performances in 2014 by The New York Times, Basetrack Live is an extraordinary work of documentary theater. An ambitious collaboration between award-winning theater company En Garde Arts and corpsmen from the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines out of the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (Marine 1/8), Basetrack Live powerfully portrays the impact of war on veterans and their families.

Based on the website One-Eight Basetrack launched by Teru Kuwayama, featuring a beautiful musical score plus photographs by Balazs Gardi and a small group of independent journalists, Basetrack Live brings a marine’s story to light and shows the transformation of ordinary people fundamentally changed by the extraordinary experience of fighting a war. Characters are not represented as either heroes or victims, instead, this show displays a complicated and sensitive portrayal of how war affects us all.
