15 years of Precious help for the community

How you can help and what will it do Although Precious Lives has managed to upscale they still need help. Here is how you can help: Make a donantion Volunteer

For more than 15 years, Precious Lives has been helping people across Hackney. Founded in 2008 by Amina and her son Kizi, the charity has grown from organising family activities and homework support to providing mental health services, healthy eating workshops, legal advice and exercise classes through the Community African Network (CAN).

Every contribution helps keep this vital service open for residents. As donations allow the charity to buy large pallets of food costing £200-£400 with £2000 worth of contents. Furthermore donations go to pay for transport to make collecting donations easier.

How to get involved To get in touch and make a difference:

During the pandemic, rising demand led to the launch of a food bank, which quickly outgrew its original space. In November 2025, the charity moved into Pembury Community Centre, giving volunteers a permanent base to support local residents. Today, up to 20 volunteers welcome around 90 people each week, providing food, toiletries and other essentials, with no referral needed. As demand continues to grow, Precious Lives remains a powerful example of communities coming together to support one another.

Pembury gym update Thank you to all the leaseholders who took part in our recent consultation on the potential refurbishment of the Pembury gym. We were pleased to receive a range of feedback and appreciate the time residents took to share their views. We are now carefully reviewing all responses to help inform the next stage of the process. Once this review is complete, we will provide an update on the findings and outline the proposed next steps.

Pull up a chair and share your thoughts! Camerados is a people-powered movement built on the belief that “the answer to our problems is each other.” It encourages people to look out for one another, share a conversation, and be alongside others during tough times without trying to fix them. Through welcoming Public Living Rooms and community connections, Camerados helps people feel more human, supported, and less alone. We’re working with them on a Public Living Room idea for Pembury, and would love to hear your views. Please take part in our survey and share your opinions to help us better understand the needs and experiences of local residents. Your feedback is important and will help shape future community support and activities. Take the survey

Summer Solstice at Pembury Community Gardens

The hot weather over the summer hasn’t stopped the dedicated residents involved with the community garden from keeping busy. On Saturday 20 June the garden played host to a Summer Solstice event, organised by Seeds for Growth. The day included planning pumpkins ahead of autumn using home made mulch from layered leaves and grass cuttings. There was also a relaxing somatic movements in nature workshop, as well as scones served alongside freshly grown raspberries. Over the last few weeks, the group have also been able to harvest lots of garlic and broad beans, which residents have used to make fresh bean hummus. We can’t wait to see what else grows in the community garden this summer! All residents are welcome to come along and get involved. Take part every other Tuesday from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and every other Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. To stay in the loop, email the Seeds for Growth team at william@seedsforgrowth.org.uk

A welcome step forward

You said, we did

We’re pleased to share that residents affected by the fire at Dalston Lane are expected to begin moving back into their homes from September. Over the past two years, residents have shown remarkable patience and resilience while living in temporary accommodation as refurbishment works have taken place. Reaching this milestone is a significant moment for the community and everyone involved in the recovery programme. We look forward to welcoming residents home and supporting them through the next stage of their journey back to Dalston Lane.

Check your heating Before the cold weather arrives, take a few minutes to check that your boiler and heating are working properly. Simply turn on your heating and hot water and make sure everything fires up as expected. Testing your system early can help identify any issues before temperatures drop and demand for repairs increases. If there is a problem, you'll have more time to arrange a repair and avoid long waits during the busiest time of year. A quick check now could make all the difference later. No one wants to start winter in a cold home without heating or hot water. By acting now, you can stay one step ahead and make sure your home is warm, comfortable and ready for the colder months.

In the Spring Pembury newsletter, we shared that young people from across Pembury had come together with members of your local Peabody team to discuss what they want to see happening in their neighbourhood. Since then, we’ve run two more workshops to explore what working-age adults and older residents would like the next 10 years of Pembury to look like. The Working Age Adults Workshop brought together 17 residents to discuss their experiences, community strengths, ongoing challenges and future aspirations. Read more about what residents said at this workshop. Ten residents also attended the Pembury Older People’s Workshop to reflect on life on the estate, discuss what is working well, identify challenges and explore hopes for the future. Read a summary of the discussion here. The sessions created space for residents to speak openly about community life, safety, communication, accountability, accessibility and the changes they would like to see in the years ahead. Conversations were constructive, thoughtful and grounded in lived experience.
