Resident voices shape improvements at Southwark Street
Earlier this month, Peabody’s Chief Executive Officer Ian McDermott and Board Chair Caroline Corby visited Southwark Street to see first-hand how resident feedback has helped shape the refurbishment of the estate’s soon to be opened play space and ballcourt, delivered in partnership with our Landscape & Telecoms team.
The visit showcased the fantastic work of the Southwark Street Tenant and Resident Association (TRA), one of our newer resident-led groups, and the input of residents from across the estate, who have played a key role in influencing the final design and delivery of the project.
Ian and Caroline heard directly from residents about the consultation process, the difference it makes when residents feel listened to, and the important role the TRA plays in improving the estate.
They also joined residents for planting activities, highlighting the pride and ownership the community has in its local spaces.
Thank you to members of the Southwark Street TRA, the residents from Southwark Street who took part in the consultation and and to our South region Neighbourhood and Estates teams, for working together to build trust, strengthen relationships and deliver positive outcomes for residents.
Fresh spaces, greener places

Buildings are now enjoying a refreshed and more welcoming courtyard following the completion of improvement works.
The transformed space includes a brandnew play area for younger residents, a modern ball court for recreation and exercise, and enhanced landscaping with new planting and trees to create a greener environment for everyone. Car parking has also been rationalised, helping to make better use of the space while improving accessibility and safety across the courtyard.
The changes have already been warmly received, with residents sharing positive feedback about the improved facilities and the more open, attractive surroundings.
The project has created a vibrant community space that supports play, wellbeing and neighbourly connections, giving residents of all ages more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors close to home.
We hope the new courtyard will be enjoyed for many years to come.
Staying safe and cool
this summer
As temperatures rise, a few simple steps can help keep you and your household comfortable and safe. During the hottest parts of the day, keep windows and curtains closed to block out heat, then open them early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. If one room in your home stays cooler than the others, make it your goto space during the day.
Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take it easy when the heat is at its peak. Cool showers, damp flannels and refreshing foods such as fruit and salads can also help you stay comfortable.

Heading out? Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, seek shade where possible and plan journeys carefully, as public transport and cars can become very warm. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
Look out for signs of heat exhaustion, including headaches, excessive sweating, feeling sick or extreme thirst. If symptoms occur, move to a cool place, drink water and seek advice from NHS 111 if needed.
Please don’t forget to check on neighbours, friends or relatives who may need extra support during hot weather.

A number of residents have raised concerns regarding dogs.
Due to the recent hot weather, we’ve received reports of increased barking during both daytime and nighttime hours and that some dogs have been roaming off the lead. This is causing disturbance and anxiety for neighbours.
We are actively monitoring the situation and engaging with residents where appropriate to stop any more problems.
E-bike safety
As e‐bikes and e‐scooters become more popular, fires linked to their lithium batteries are increasing. These batteries can overheat and ignite quickly, so please follow these simple safety tips:
Do:
Charge your e‐bike or e‐scooter indoors where you can keep an eye on it. Use the original charger that meets safety standards. Stop using the battery if it’s swollen, cracked or overheating. Test the smoke alarm in the area where you charge it.
Don’t:
Charge your e-bike or scooter in a communal area - it may be removed. Leave your e‐bike or e‐scooter charging overnight or while you’re out.

Bin chute consultation
The bin chutes in the blocks at Blackfriars Estate have presented ongoing challenges for a number of years. We will soon be consulting residents on a proposal to permanently close them.
No decision has been made, and we want to hear the views of affected residents. Details on how to take part will be shared soon.
