Over the years you hear and remember some interesting things. Like the old saying about how old men sit and talk about the weather, and old women sit and talk about old men. Which makes me think about one of my favorite sayings, “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” This holds true for many things in this world, especially our cattle herd. Good feet, good utters, and good temperament. If any of these qualities aren’t met, the animal doesn’t stay. This goes for our women too. My family works around our cows every day and a quiet temperament is essential. Another saying I like is “If you don’t make the first step, the finish line doesn’t get any closer.” Which translates into if you don’t take the first step to improve your herd by purchasing top genetic bulls you won’t be raising those top $1700-1800 calves in the fall. This bull is a calving ease specialist a firewater out of a 15 year old cow that has been a standout for us here at Prairie Cove. Sparrows Tempest 174K has raised sons and daughters that are working in herds all across Canada. With his 90lbs birth weight and his smooth shoulder and extra length of body, this herdsire puts it all together.
An embryo transplant bull, out of one of the best matings in the charolais breed. The Pastor bull sold for $76,000 a couple of years ago and his first offspring have been outstanding with more performance and lots of hair. PCC RIGID 411B is very exciting son of the PASTOR bull, he has excellent hair , walks out on super set of feet and legs and is out of a high volume, heavy milking cow that was sold to Bill Swensen of Rainalta Charolais. PCC RIGID’s sister sired by Firewater was the highseller in the Alberta Select Sale to PRO-CHAR and JOHNSON Charolais and has a perfect udder. This is a big time herdbull and will sire the type of calves that make money, easy doing and hairy, very marketable.
PCC FRANKLIN 420B is a thick, stocky, easy fleshing beef bull. He has a great disposition and a fantastic hair coat. This bull has a great mother we have used in our flush program with lots of success. FRANKLIN has great testicle development for being an March 20 born bull. Good solid bull with an excellent mother to back him up.

Expected Progeny Difference Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations.
EPDs:
• allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value - that animal’s value as a parent • allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management • the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth • help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA,FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency(CE, MCE, SC) • estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates
EPDs evaluate group averages and offspring’s performance. They can not predict individual performance or weights. For example. If Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring 10 be 50 Ibs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50). Accuracy - reflects the reliability of the EPD value. High accuracy values (>.80) mean the EPD value is closer to the true breeding value than an EPD value with a lower accuracy (-<.20)
To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums”works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque. Settlement to be made immediately after completion of the sale, payable at par to Bow Slope Shipping Association. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements must be made with the clerk before any cattle will be released. Bidding: Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. No by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in the dispute. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final. Announcements: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to such disclosures. Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the breed association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made. Health: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements. Liabilities: All persons attend the sale at their own risk and the seller and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. Breeder’s Guarantee: The following extracts from the rules and regulations governing this sale be of special interest to those purchasing breeding stock. “If in the opinion of the buyer an animal proves to be a nonbreeder, he must notify Bow Slope Shipping Assoc. within two months after the date of the sale. When an animal is proven by a veterinarian to be a non-breeder, the contributor agrees to refund the purchase price in full providing the bull is returned to the contributor in good physical condition, or to supply the purchaser with an animal of approximately equal age, quality and breeding. In either case, the non-breeding animal is to be returned to the contributor, and the purchaser is responsible for all transportation and veterinary charges incurred.
