This year Steppler Farms introduces two new programs – Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty and Steppler Farms Herd Bull Guarantee. I have also included yearling bull management ideas that we use when working with virgin bulls. Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty is designed to protect your investment in a Steppler bull. All bulls sold through the March 12, 2017, bull sale are covered for injury and/or death for six months after the bull sale date with ZERO premium. If your 2017 sale bull is injured or dies within this time period, simply phone and we will supply a bull to breed your cows. Injured bulls must be returned to Steppler Farms; supply us with vet verification of bulls that have died. You will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2018 bull sale. STEPPLER FARMS BREEDING WARRANTY • All bulls sold through the 2017 bull sale are covered for all injury and death 6 months after the March 12th bull sale date with ZERO PREMIUM.
• You will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2018 bull sale. Steppler Farms will only cover up to a $10,000 investment on a bull. If a buyer wants to cover a more expensive bull, he or she will need to deal with their own outside insurance
• The buyer must contact Steppler Farms immediately to ensure coverage is within the 6 month warranty date.
• Buyer will receive a backup bull to get their cows bred at zero charge to the buyer.
• All injured bulls become the property of Steppler Farms and a signed transferable registration paper must accompany the bull upon return.
• The backup bull must be returned by the customer to Steppler Farms by October 1st.
• If requested, injured bulls must be checked by a certified vet and this report shared with Steppler Farms. A vet report must be supplied if the bull dies.
STEPPLER FARMS HERD BULL GUARANTEE satisfactory body condition score, with a signed transferable registration paper. Steppler Farms reserves the right to deduct from the sales credit for any bull returned with a body condition score lower than 3. Steppler Farms also assumes full possession of the returned bull.

BUL L M ANAGEM EN T This page in our bull sale catalogue shows how we manage our bull power to maximize our bull investments and also provides tips you can use with your animals. Buying a herdsire is one of our bigger expenditures. With this much money invested in bulls, we make sure the investments work for us.
bull to settle appropriately. I have talked to several cattlemen who successfully run a few bulls together or rotate bulls every three days or so to keep the conception rate up. However, as purebred breeders, we need to know the parentage; we can’t run multiple bulls so we A.I. all the cows for the first 28 days. Heat detection and inseminating the cows is a big commitment but I really enjoy this part of the production cycle. I heat detect at daylight and at dusk. Cows are then A.I. bred 12 hours after they are in full standing heat.
These breeding bulls must be purebred, registered and must have passed a semen test. We also freeze semen on the higher quality animals. This is done for two reasons: First this lets us A.I. more cows to specific bulls in the first year and secondly, semen in the tank acts as backup insurance in case the bull gets injured or dies. We always have access to that bull’s genetics.
We have synchronized the heifer pen for three years now. We feed MGA for 19 days and then wait for 17 more. Heifers are given estrumate on the 17th day and then heat detected. We AI the heifers for the beginning of the breeding season because it gives them more time to rebreed the following year. Any repeats still rebreed to calve by the end of January and lastly, we are more attentive at the beginning of the calving season.
We maintain a 65 day calving period and that means the breeding season is short as well, so our bulls must be ready. This all starts with managing the breeding females as well and nutrition is of number one importance in order for them to rebreed. We focus on nutrition year round. Each group of females get a ration specifically designed for them. We sort the cows according to age, condition, and calving date. The first 50 mature good condition cows are all in one pen; then the next 50 of the same class makeup the next pen. 1st time calvers and old cows are another group; 2nd time calvers are another. Finally, there is a cull cow group, an important pen to have. Why have a cull cow take up an important service from your new bull?
Now with the majority of the cows bred in the first cycle, my herd bulls go out but not before they are evaluated on their ability to physically breed. This goes for the mature bulls as well as the yearlings. I also monitor yearling bulls closely to make sure they learn how to breed. Patience can be very important here for some of these first time breeders. I will usually have frozen semen on these bulls so I can A.I. that same cow the next day. The bulls breed for 42 days and then are pulled from the cows and fed so they regain their initial breeding condition. This condenses the calving season which also culls infertile cows. The bulls are able to rest and rebuild for the next season.
Since all these cows calved close together, the majority will cycle together. This results in too many cycling for any one

• We are patient with the young bull that has trouble figuring this all out. We remove the cow, and start the process again the next day or so. Young bulls can lose confidence, so it is crucial to remain patient. Always remember that a frustrated bull will become more aggressive toward you and the cow. Safety comes first to avoid injury to animals and people.
Bulls will lose a lot of weight throughout breeding and often do not look like the same animals we turned out with the cows. To counter this, we put the bulls into wintering groups splitting mature bulls from yearlings. They are all fed development rations designed by East Man Feeds which, when started so early and carried on over a 300 day period, allows for optimum longevity. Yearling bulls receive a growing ration which gives them that extra needed nutrition. The bulls will come back into good condition quite easily when fed proper nutrition. If a bull does not regain his condition, he is flagged and further assessed, in consultation with our vet. A good working relationship with our vet on overall herd health helps us achieve a high conception rate. As a rule of thumb, we run 10-15 cows with a yearling bull and 20-35 for a mature bull. Several factors dictate this working number: condition and ages of both cows and bull, pasture size, cow size, weather, etc. It is important to have a few back up bulls just in case. I like to buy a yearling each year as backup and then develop him into a strong two year old for next year. If I suspect a bull isn’t working, I immediately pull him and rest him for a period of time before trying him again. Even if the animal still appears to be breeding, I can’t risk open cows because of fatigue or injury.
We give a yearling bull at least three different opportunities to breed a full standing cow following this method. A very low percentage of young bulls never do figure it out. If that is the case, the next step is to call me. We find that giving a bull time to learn to breed enables us to successfully develop the animal into a great breeding bull capable of doing his job effectively and efficiently. It is also very important to select a bull to match your management, breeding and genetic expectations. If you are calving first time heifers or smaller pinned cows, select a bull with a high calving ease EPD and subsequent low birth weight. It is important to look at both because the actual birth weight isn’t the only indicator of the bull’s ability to calve. On larger framed and high calving ability cows, a bigger birth weight bull allows you to take full advantage of your cow herd’s potential. A good cow should be able to have a calf that is 7% of her body weight. Birth weight and performance are one of the highest correlated traits; higher birth weight creates more pounds at weaning. We don’t need to be breeding for excessive birth weights but do ask more from your cows.
Yearling bulls have to learn how to breed; the majority take to this like a duck to water! Proper handling skills and procedures are very important though when dealing with young prospects needing patience in this crucial learning phase. This procedure works for us: • We use a full standing quiet cow for the bull to learn to breed on. We do not overwhelm the bull with extra aggressive cows at this point.
In our large herd, there aren’t any cows that get special treatment. All of our cows are worked on foot and are accustomed to low stress handling techniques. We work our animals slowly and quietly and make good use of our handling facilities. Our cattle aren’t used to being worked with dogs or horses. They will easily adjust to your handling techniques but do give them some time to adapt.
• We provide a pen with adequate room, proper footing and ideally away from other bulls. • We give the bull ample time to evaluate the cow; some bulls need more time to figure out what a cow is, to realize that he should jump her, how and where to jump, in order to successfully breed the cow.

12 January 2012 We purchased Copenhagen 210Z from the Sparrow’s 2013 Bull Sale. Copenhagen’s depth of quarter, curly hair and his excellent foot led us to buy our first horned bull in a very long time. Looking back, what an excellent decision to have made. Copenhagen’s first calves are all stamped with his depth of quarter and full hair coat and they are as correct as they come. The Copenhagen heifer calves were the first to cycle in our replacement pen and our 2014 show heifers were Copenhagen daughters. The Copenhagen daughters are simply awesome. Lots of milk and beautiful udders. Top 2% for Yearling Weight, 1% for milk and 1% for Total Maternal. Copenhagen’s mother and grandmother are two of the best uddered females I have ever seen.

January 17 2014 DBL PLD We purchased JWX Burnin it Down 613B as the high selling bull out of the 2015 Wilgenbusch bull sale. We were looking for an outcross pedigree that would add length and performance. Burnin It Down has done exactly what we wanted him to do and more. 613B’s mother is a Junction daughter still working in Wilgenbusch’s herd at 10 years of age. Her functionality and longevity made it an easy decision to bring Burnin It Down into our breeding program. Burnin It Down is in the top 4% for weaning, 1% in YW, 15% for Milk, and top 2% of the breed for Total Maternal.

POLLED We purchased Seminole 927W as a yearling out of Sparrow Farms 2009 bull sale because we were impressed by the bull’s tremendous thickness, length of spine and depth of rib. In addition, Seminole is correct in every way and is perfectly footed with lots of hair and excellent testicle development. With Seminole, we won 2010 Supreme Champion Bull at MLE in 2010 as well as winning Grand Champion Charolais bull the same year. We used Seminole heavily in our breeding program and he now has a spot as the cornerstone sire at Steppler Farms. Seminole’s sons follow their father’s footsteps with these curve bending stats behind them. Seminole’s Breed Leading Stats: Top 15% for Weaning Weight, Top 5% for Yearling Weight, Top 10% for Milk and Top 3% for Total Maternal. And let’s not forget the 1.5 BW EPD and a calving ease EPD of 56.8. The Seminole females are simply awesome, with excellent udders and ample milk.

HEALTH PROTOCOL & NUTRITION Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated matings. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70- 75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28 day AI program, the herdbulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herdbulls finish the job. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days of the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out. We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. Delivery: Breeder Guarantee: Steppler Farms will work with you and your vet in determining the herd bull guarantee; Steppler Farms retains the right to void this guarantee if misuse, mishandling, or mal treatment of the bull by the purchaser is suspected. Steppler Farms retains the right to have a vet chosen by Steppler Farms to evaluate bulls and has the right to take our vet’s opinion on said herd bull guarantee animals. Steppler Farms is not responsible for any more than the original purchase price of the bull and does not guarantee that semen collected from the bull will freeze. Steppler Farms will work with all bull sale customers who use the Breeding warranty and or Herd bull guarantee but with the understanding that Steppler Farms makes final determination in any compensation legal or otherwise to the buyer. Exception Guarantee: In the case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price.
