The calf market keeps moving up as feed grain prices keep moving down, and if you haven’t been in an auction market lately seeing how your customer’s calves are selling you should be. Now is a great time to show that you are interested in how your bull buyers are making out and to see the trends in the marketplace. Please also make plans to show your support of the breed by attending some of the many shows and sales this fall. The first sales in Eastern Canada have been very solid with lots of interest from across the country from established and new breeders. I think many are seeing the shortage of Charolais bulls as an opportunity to expand and capitalize on the situation. With A & W the buzz in cattle circles, I thought I would share an article that came to me on Twitter and I retweeted it but thought it was worth putting it in the magazine. It came from the website Real Agriculture and is written by Andrew Campbell from southern Ontario. “I’m Done with fearing food and done with A&W There are hormones in your food! What’s worse, they are in you! Alarmed yet? You shouldn’t be, and I’ll tell you why, plus why I’m done with marketing gimmicks and done with A&W Canada. Yes, there are hormones in your food, but are they something to fear? A&W certainly thinks so, with a new campaign promoting their beef burgers produced with “no added hormones or steroids”. It is good to know a company that says, “Being a leader isn’t always easy – but doing the right thing rarely is,” is clearly only interested in selling a few more hamburgers because of fear, rather than educating a skeptical customer. First point: You have hormones in you right now, and whether you eat a Teen Burger or not isn’t going to change that. In fact, you may even be taking 6
additional hormones to help keep you from getting pregnant, lessen the effects of menopause, or an incredible host of other concerns and issues. Hormones also are natural in every other living thing from a soybean plant to a duck. It is why A&W has to promote there are not ‘added’ hormones, and can’t get away with saying hormone‐free. (Despite the fact A&W promoted a news article that got the facts wrong in the very first line). The bun on the burger would have more estrogen than a beef patty from an animal once treated with a hormone. My second point takes us back to the farm. In Canada and the U.S., an animal can be given a hormone (also called growth promotant) early on. Growth promtants improve the animal’s ability to process the food they eat into muscle tissue. It works via a tiny implant placed under the skin of the ear. These are slow‐release products that last about 180 days, but are used long before (at least 200 days) an animal heads to market. Why do it? With the help of hormones already circulating in all of us, these animals convert their food into muscle more efficiently — it means less crops are needed to feed that animal and therefore less manure is produced. Sarah Schultz, who blogs at Nurse Loves Farmer, pulled the stats from the Beef Cattle Research Council, and explains in her blog post on the topic, that if we didn’t use these tiny implants, it would take 12% more cattle, 11% more feed, and 10% more land to produce the same amount of beef as we are producing today. It would also mean 10% more greenhouse gases because of the increased manure. That is a huge positive environmental impact for such a tiny implant. Third point (and this is where I really find A&W’s commitment to fear shines), Iowa State University highlighted the ‘estrogenic activity’ of a number of foods. In 500 grams of beef (or more than an entire pound) not given the added hormone, there are 5 nanograms of estrogen (ng). In an entire pound of beef given that little injection, there are Charolais Banner • October 2013
7 ng. Big difference? Not if you look at the fact your body, very naturally produced 136,000 nanograms of estrogen today, if you are a man. As a woman, you’ll produce 513,000 nanograms per day, and the mood swings that your pregnant friend seems to be feeling could be because of the almost 20 million nanograms she is producing each and every day. And we are bickering over 2? (In case you are curious, peanuts show up on the scale at 100,000 ng, white bread 300,000,ng and tofu at 113 million nanograms for the same 500g. So yes, the bun on the burger would have more estrogen than a beef patty from an animal once treated with a hormone. Also, birth control pills contain 20,000 to 50,000 ng). The Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also has a report on the use, and backs up what Iowa State found– that the contribution to my system of a beef animal treated with a hormone relative to what I produce on my own is 0.00025%. And eating at A&W, despite what they want you to believe, can’t even make that zero. So what do we do? Well, I’m going to start by telling A&W that their cheeky campaign, that is only meant to play on fears and certainly not inform, isn’t going to cut it for me. In fact, I’m done with A&W. It certainly doesn’t help their cause that they don’t buy 100% Canadian, even though they pride themselves on their Canadian heritage – but that discussion can wait. I hope you choose not to stand for this either. It is too bad to go after an iconic company like A&W like this, but food companies have got to get a hold of their marketing people and shake the fear, misinformation and downright dirty tricks out. Le pain qui sert à faire le burger contient plus d’estrogene que la boulette de bœuf provenant d’un animal traité aux hormones. Mon second point : c’est qu’au CDN et aux USA les hormones sont légales.(Également appelé stimulateur de croissance )L’implant permet à l’animal d’améliorer l’efficacité de la nourriture qu’il absorbe.Il fonctionne via un implant placé sous la peau de l’oreille.La libération de l’hormone se produit environ 180 jours et aide à donner du muscle à l’animal tout en prenant moins de nourriture et par le fait même moins de fumier. Sarah Schultz qui blogue sur infirmière (Loves Farmer) explique sur son blogue que sans cet implant minuscule il faudrait 12% plus de bovins, 11% plus de nourriture et 10% plus de terres pour produire la même quantité de bœuf que nous
produisontaujourd’hui.Cela signifierait une augmentation de 10% les gaz a effet de serre, dû à l’augmentation de fumier causant un impact environmental énorme. Tout ça pour un simple implant. Et c’est là que A&W fausse la vérité au point de vu des Estrogènes. Dans 500g de bœuf ou il y a eu injection on retrouve seulement 7ng. Vraiment une grosse différence……..votre corps si vous êtes un homme produit 136,000ng d’estrogène et une femme produit 513,000ng par jouret la femme enceinte 20millions ng chaque jour.Le département d’Agriculture Américain à aussi fait une recherche dansl’état d’Iowa que, quand on mange chez A&W on retrouve 0.00025% d’Estrogène donc ce n’est pas de la viande sans hormones.Il y a un rapport ou vous pourrez trouver toutes les informations sur la testostérone et la progestérone deux autres hormones naturelles.Et sur les impacts que peut causer un implant .Toutes ces informations peuvent se trouver au Centre d’Information du Bœuf Canadien.Ce que je dis c’est que A&W font une publicité trompeuse et ce qui ne les aident pas c’est qu’ils n’achètent pas uniquement Canadien.Ils se servent de la peur pour mousser leurs ventes.Donc il ne faut pas croire à leurs astuces pas très recommandables.Vous pouvez toujours vous fier sur Craig et moi pour vous renseignern’hésité pas à nous contacter. Production sales are around the corner and calf crops are headed to a strong market that’s expected to carry right through fall. Now is always the time to capitalize on Charolais to beef up your profits! Upcoming Dates to Remember • To have your Weaning Data included in the Fall EPD Evaluation please submit your information by October 31, 2013 • CCA SCHOLARSHIP deadline is October 31 annually. Are you involved in agriculture and registered in a post‐secondary education program? Do you or your family use Charolais bulls? Submit your completed application to the CCA Office by October 31 to be considered for one of three
available scholarships through the CCA totalling $3500. Application forms are available at www.charolais.com/wp‐content/ uploads/2013/07/CCA‐Scholarship‐ App‐rev‐2013.pdf • 2014 Whole Herd Enrollment information will be arriving at your mailbox in November. Please review and have your females enrolled by January 1, 2014. Two Year Old heifers (females born in 2012, tattoo year letter Z) must be enrolled January 1. Annual membership fees are also due January 1, 2014 The CCA’s DNA SNP conversion is in the infancy stages with historical samples being sent for testing with the new technology. In the coming weeks all new parentage samples will be completed on SNP panels; we expect this conversion to be seamless to our breeders. In addition to parentage, we’ll be building our training population with High Density tests to work on the long term goal of
incorporating genomics into our genetic evaluations thus increasing accuracies of young parents. As producers, please continue to contribute your performance data; to utilize genomics in our evaluations we must maintain an accurate database to ensure positive breed improvements. It’s never too early to do a DNA test, but unfortunately it can be too late. Please request your required DNA forms from the CCA Office. When submitting your samples it’s best to have approximately 50 hairs from the animal being tested and all samples clearly identified. As a reminder and in reference to our CCA By‐Laws: • Walking sires must have DNA on file • AI sires must be Parent Verified (Sire AND Dam) and Karyotyped • ALL Full French animals must be Parent Verified • ET calves must be Parent Verified • Donor Dams must have DNA on file

Beef Innovations 2013: Cattle Producers and Scientists Talk Genomics Trish Henderson
Producers from all major Canadian beef breeds took advantage of a unique opportunity to learn more about advances in the world of beef cattle genetics on July 15th and 16th when the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) hosted Beef Innovations 2013 in Calgary. This first‐of‐its‐kind symposium provided an opportunity for cattle producers – both purebred and commercial – to meet world‐renowned scientists in the field of beef animal genomic research. The event was a culmination of two years of research supported by the CSA though its $3.5 million Simmental Innovations genetic improvement initiative; which focuses on helping cattle breeders identify, select and breed cattle that are more fertile, more feed efficient, and produce higher quality beef. “The process of beef improvement is taking shape as a three‐legged stool,” CSA General Manager Bruce Holmquist says. The first leg of the stool is the pedigree and visual
assessment, telling us who the animal is. The second leg of the stool is the performance of that animal, or phenotype, telling us what he or she did. Genomics, which can be thought of as gene mapping, is the third leg of the stool—making it stable by providing the means to accurately predict what traits an animal is genetically capable of passing on to its offspring. Dr. Mike Goddard from the University of Melbourne, Australia was the lead‐off presenter amongst the nineteen world‐class guest speakers at Beef Innovations 2013. According to Dr. Goddard, traditional selection based on performance and pedigree works – it’s just a slow process for some traits such as fertility and meat quality. Genomics can speed up the pace of selection for such important characteristics, which can have a big impact on the bottom line for all beef producers: from cow calf operations to packers. One way Canadian cattle producers
will soon be able to utilize genomic information in their breeding decisions is through the use of genomic‐enhanced expected progeny differences, or GE‐EPDs. Dr. Goddard outlined how this process works: 1. The purebred breeder takes hair root sample (DNA) from an animal and sends it to lab; 2. The lab analyzes the animal’s genotype and makes genomic predictions; 3. Breed associations incorporate genomic predictions with traditional EPDs to create GE‐EPDs that are more accurate tools for bull buyers. Several Canadian breed associations, including Simmental, Angus, and Hereford, have already adopted or will soon be offering GE‐EPDs. Dr. Goddard estimates that the value of GE‐EPDs is $100 to $600 per bull. Despite this potential value, Dr. Bob Weaber of Kansas State University had a warning for continued on page 18

Breeding more efficient cattle reduces costs of production for producers, shrinks the environmental footprint of beef production, and produces more food for the world. “A 10% improvement in feed efficiency across the feedlot sector is worth $1.2 billion in reduced feed costs.” – Dr. Bob Weaber Further genomic advances will help scientists and breeders better understand complex relationships between important traits, such as meat quality, fertility, and feed efficiency. “Tenderness is the most important beef desirability trait, but many genes and many factors affect tenderness.” – Dr. Mike Dikeman 16
Next steps for research include increasing the accuracy of genomic predictions within groups of similar cattle (such as a single breed) and creating methods to predict the performance of crossbred cattle. “The seed stock industry has always accepted new technologies, and genomic information is a great new tool to embrace.” – Dr. John Pollak With genomics, the potential of an individual animal can be predicted at birth; when combined with artificial insemination and embryo transplant technologies, genomic data can greatly speed up the rate of genetic improvement. Breeders must understand the traits they’re selecting, and what direction these decisions will take their herd. “The faster one goes, the harder it hurts if one crashes! It is more important than ever to ensure one goes in the right direction.” – Dr. Jacques Chesnais Collaboration across the beef industry is required in order to improve the accuracy of genomic predictions, and to learn more about economically important traits such as feed efficiency, carcass quality and fertility. “Through its Simmental Innovations projects, the CSA will collect 15,000 genotypes. This will help increase accuracy of all genomic predictions.” – Dr. Steve Miller

purebred breeders at Beef Innovations 2013: GE‐EPDs can be a marketing tool, but they are best used as a selection tool. Although there has recently been great technological advancement in genomic information for beef cattle, there is still room to make it a better tool for producers. For example, Dr. John Crowley of Livestock Gentec told Beef Innovations participants that genomics currently allow for prediction of feed efficiency with 35% accuracy within beef breeds and 15% accuracy in crossbred cattle. Compare this to 75% accuracy for some genomic predictions used in the dairy sector, and scientists agree that more work needs to be done on genomic predictions for beef cattle. The need for worldwide collaboration was a resounding theme at Beef Innovations 2013. According to presenters, the most effective method for improving genomic prediction tools is global data sharing amongst those who collect genotypic and phenotypic information. By doing so, individual breeders, breed associations, private companies, and academia can contribute to the growth of genomic databanks that are more statistically accurate. The ultimate goal – a common one across all breeds and all countries – is to produce tools such as GE‐EPDs that can accurately predict an animal’s potential today,
and will continue to be just as accurate when used in future generations of cattle. Those doubting the relevance of genomic technology in the beef sector need look no further than the dairy and hog industries. The Holstein breed was an early adopter of genomics. According to Dr. Jacques Chesnais, another Beef Innovations 2013 presenter, genomic technology is the single biggest event for the dairy sector since the introduction of frozen semen. “Genomics have allowed the dairy sector to double its rate of genetic progress. Today, all elite dairy breeders genotype their females,” Dr. Chesnais says. Recounting the story of purebred swine producers in North American losing their market when corporate breeders began offering commercial hog producers superior composite genetics, Dr. Wade Shafer of the American Simmental Association told Beef Innovations 2013 attendees that leveraging science, such as genomics, could be the key to ensuring survival of the family seed‐ stock operation. Nonetheless, experts speaking at Beef Innovations 2013 also stressed the need for well‐balanced breeding decisions. Focusing too much on complex traits that are influenced by many genes and environmental factors, such as feed efficiency or carcass quality, can adversely impact other important characteristics. For
example, Dr. Yuri Montanholi of the University of Guelph shared preliminary research findings that demonstrate a possible negative correlation between feed efficiency and semen quality. More research is needed in order to confirm unintentional consequences of intense selection for specific beef cattle characteristics. For maximum economic benefit, commercial cattle producers should be selecting the best possible herdsires. It is the responsibility of cattle breeders to make well‐informed seedstock selections in order to market only bulls that can offer genetic improvement to commercial herds. It is in every cattleman’s best interest to produce more fertile and feed efficient animals that also yield high quality beef. The CSA is proud to be spearheading initiatives like Beef Innovations 2013. Scientific research like that funded through CSA’s own Simmental Innovations arm will help further the industry by improving the bottom line for beef producers from cow‐calf to packer, reducing the environmental footprint of our industry, and providing a better beef‐ eating experience for the consumer. Pregnancy Checking Rectal Palpation Versus Ultrasound Roy Lewis DVM
Both rectal palpation and ultrasound for pregnancy have certain advantages depending on their intended application. Both, in order to be accurate, must have a skilled veterinarian performing the pregnancy exam. I will try to outline the pros and cons of each method so you can see how best they fit in your farming operation. Many myths and fallacies surround pregnancy examination and hopefully these will be dispelled in this article. Rectal examination has been performed by veterinarians for eons and very little has changed in this science. It is a relatively quick, cost effective and safe procedure in the right hands. Accuracy is good in the early stages of pregnancy (30‐90 days). In mid gestation (4‐7mths) it is not uncommon for veterinarians to be out two weeks to a month in their estimate. Several things account for this, which are easily explained. Gestational length still varies tremendously. I always use the example of a flush of embryos put into recipient cows. Even though genetics are identical and they are implanted within minutes of each other it is not uncommon to have the recipients calving up to one month apart. Depending on breed and sex of calf, gestations also vary greatly. The veterinarian may palpate the non‐ pregnant horn of the uterus giving a false underestimation of pregnancy status. The most important things are whether the cow is open or is late. With good setups and in skilled veterinarians’ hands, rates of up to 100 head per hour can be accomplished. A misnomer of pregnancy examination causing abortions is one we still hear frequently. There is only a very slight risk in the real early stages of pregnancy (around 30 days) and skilled palpators are seldom in the rectum for more than a few seconds, minimizing any 20
risk. We do not manipulate the fetus as is talked about. Rough handling and banging through the chute are more likely to cause abortions then any rectal palpations ever have. One must keep in mind abortions still normally occur in 2‐3% of cattle yearly. This has numerous causes including genetic defects, infectious causes, twinning and trauma. The veterinarian relies on a good set up of equipment, preferably with a palpation cage, ob. sleeves and lube. Veterinarians always need to find a positive sign of pregnancy. This involves balloting the uterus or feeling for the presence of cotyledons. In confirming a cow open the whole reproductive tract is explored. The only cows which are difficult to do are extremely fat ones. Their internal fat pushes the uterus down making it difficult to reach and retract to confirm an open uterus. Ultrasound requires a large capital outlay for the veterinarian and the diagnostic intent should be a lot different. Reproductive problems can be explored since you can differentiate fluid from pus and make a more definitive diagnosis. If interested in fetal sexing this (although more difficult and time consuming) can be accomplished when cows are 55‐75 days pregnant. The ultrasound is very accurate in the 30 to 75 day range. It is more inaccurate in the later stages of pregnancy. Newer ultrasounds have probes that get much deeper so allow more accuracy later in pregnancy. Others have introducers whereby the veterinarian’s arm does not even enter the rectum. We need to watch these as occasionally the rectum can be perforated and a massive peritonitis is the result. Vets use lots of lubricant if using the probe introducer. Fine feel and gentleness are a virtue when it comes to rectal palpation. misdiagnosed as pregnancies and other pregnancies can be missed. Veterinarians would have gladly embraced this concept since rectal palpation is really hard on shoulders and elbows. In any pregnancy examination, we must strive to be 99% plus in the pregnant versus non‐pregnant department. With a good internal probe (quality of ultrasounds also varies considerably) besides fetal sexing, twins can be picked up and this may help the producer manage these cases differently. Fetal sexing is impossible manually and twins will rarely be picked up. Again though, cows must be ultrasound early in pregnancy for this to be accomplished. Very early embryonic deaths can be diagnosed where you have a fetus but no fetal heart beat indicating a dead fetus. Cysts on the ovaries can also be detected and easily differentiated between luteal and follicular. These cysts require a slightly different treatment regime, which your veterinarian can explain. As you can see both forms of pregnancy examination have merit. Rectal palpation being fast and safe is commonly done in most beef herds. Without all the equipment being necessary it is also less expensive to do than ultrasonography. Ultrasounds generally are used in problem breeders or when specialized procedures such as fetal sexing are required. Cows being sold with sexed embryos are often reconfirmed in calf by rectal palpation later in the year. Pregnancy checking is done by upwards of 70‐80 percent plus of cattlemen across Western Canada, but it should be much higher when we think of the feed costs this saves or being able to identify problem breeders earlier. It is even more critical as far as purebred cattle are concerned with more dollars tied up continued on page 21

Tanya Damsgaard (nee: Howe), passed away August 26, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born October 2, 1975 in Moose Jaw, she grew up on the family farm at Baildon. Tanya enjoyed piano lessons and singing with the Joy Singers at Zion United Church. She raised cattle and 4‐H projects were an activity for
the whole family. She attended Lindale School, Peacock High School, and received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1998. She moved to Swan River, MB after graduation where she met Rob and they were married on December 21, 2002. They moved to Winnipeg in 2003 and Tanya continued in her profession with Superstore, London Drugs and the Teulon Pharmacies. In more recent years Tanya’s
involvement in the industry was visible as she helped with settlement at the White Cap/Rosso Bull Sale each year. Tanya was an active member in the Canadian Charolais Association. Tanya is survived by her husband Rob of Winnipeg; parents Dale and Lois Howe; brother Mike Howe and Lisa Cunningham, brother Kelly and Julie Anne Howe and niece and nephew Ma and Elise, and Uncle Doug Howe all of Moose Jaw.

Norman Dewald 1937 – 2013
Norman Frederick Dewald was born on October 20, 1937, in Macklin, Saskatchewan, to Peter and Genoveve Dewald. Norman passed away on September 16, 2013 at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 75 years. Though finding much in life to enjoy, from chariot racing, sports, farming and being a Lions member,
Norm will be remembered for his community spirit and willingness to help, love of his family and cattle — which maybe he knew best – and his unique gift of never losing an argument. Norman was a good stockman and always enjoyed cattle. The Charwald Charolais herd is continuing on with his son Garnet, who has been involved for many years, running the operation. Norman will be dearly missed by his three children, Robert (Twila) and their children, Kayla and Dillon, Shelly (Blair Hemstock) Dalton and
her children, Brittany and Alisha (Donnie), and Garnet (Alisha) and their children, Belle and Joel; siblings, Val Dewald, Connie (Pat) Dewald, Agnus Durand, Vicki Conway, Katie (Bill Mayowski) Harrison, Bob (June) Dewald, Gertie Marks, Viola (Wayne) Baynham, and Otto (Elsie) Dewald; as well as numerous extended relatives, friends, and neighbors. Norman was predeceased by his wife, Marion; siblings, Tony, Betty, Verna, Chris, Mary, and Barbara; brother in law, Mervin McCush.

Participating in a National Youth Ambassadors Caucus in South-East Asia
YOUTH PROFILE
G
lobal Vision is a not profit organization that was created in 1991 by a former parliament member, principal and school teacher, who goes by the name of Terry Clifford. This program was created to engage Canadian youth with hands‐ on experience so they can become leaders to make a difference, not only in Canada, but the World. Since this program was created, Global Vision has trained 30,000 youth, supported the work of five Prime Ministers and had represented Canada in thirty countries and six continents, making this program nothing short of impressive. However, in order to achieve with Global Vision there are a few phases you must go through to be chosen for the various programs they offer. The first leg of my journey with Global Vision was at the Western Global Leadership Conference (WGLC) held in Winnipeg, MB. Three other students and I were chosen from my high school to attend a conference this past February, and we all had hopes of getting chosen to go to Ottawa to be a part of the 24

applicants to 100 applicants all over National Youth Ambassadors Caucus Canada! In Ottawa we were put to the (NYAC), where we would be selected test with similar challenges as the for the trade mission held in August. Winnipeg conference, so even though We were all challenged to prepare I was already chosen, I still had to three presentations with our group perform my best. During our stay in (two of them being on the spot, and Ottawa I had the chance to meet with one we had to prepare for). All of the several Members of Parliament, groups were given a challenge by including my MP Garry Breitkreuz, Parks Canada for ideas to bring in right in the Parliament building! That more youth to our beautiful national experience in itself really opened my parks, and we were judged and eyes to all of the possibilities that we placed by representatives from Parks Canada. This is where we had to as a young generation have to offer. I prove ourselves and stand out from was competing against many the eighty students that attended the impressive youth from all across conference. Canada, and being chosen to attend the mission trip was an honor, but I tried my best and proved to myself that it is possible to accomplish what you never thought you could. The mission trip was held from July 30 to August 19. Our four stops were Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, but before we could go, each delegate had to raise $5,500 in sponsorship to fund our mission. Since we were informed that we were selected early we had extra time to raise the money, but I still collected the last of it two days before we left! The whole purpose of getting sponsors was to get a mandate, so we could make connections in Asia for the businesses back home, and that is where we haved to promote our province and sponsors. In the end, I did not receive a mandate, but, I really wanted to get information on
the agriculture sector and how Canada and Asia do business together, and if I was lucky I wanted to see what they had to offer in terms of livestock. A few days before the trip I stared to get excited, nervous, and anxious. Tons of thoughts started to go through my mind! I did not really know what to expect on the mission or what I was going to make out of it, but I did know that it was going to be an experience that not many youth get to have. The moment we arrived in Hong Kong we headed to the hotel and we immediately had to get ready for our meeting at 10:30 that morning! So it’s safe to say that when we landed in Asia our trip was go, go, go! In the first few days of the mission we were introduced to several people that are very important to Canada, such as the Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong and Macou, Ian Burchett. The role of the Consul General is to create ties between the country they are representing and the country they reside in, for trade and tourism. We also met several High Commissioners in a bunch of different sectors, one was agriculture. What they had told us about agriculture was not unexpected at all. Since Hong Kong has a population of over seven billion people, and a density of 7,000 people per square kilometer there isn’t much room for agricultural growth, because all of the land they have is going to be needed for expansion. Even though, Hong Kong doesn’t have much to offer in terms of agriculture, it is however the place to start up a business, or to expand a business over seas. Little did I know there are many Canadian businesses that have offices in Hong Kong right now! So if any companies want to expand, Hong Kong is the place to do it, because it is known as the global trade and financing hub of the world. During our time In Hong Kong we went to the Hong Kong World Trade Center, The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, Invest HK, and we also received the honor to give presentations to Ian Burchett and a Top: Canton Tower in Guangzhou; Bottom: The Petronas Tower in Kuala Lumpur

bunch of business representatives from Hong Kong, at Ian’s residence. Promoting ourselves was one of the things that you could not fail at. Meeting with all of these important people was intimidating, but you have to get yourself out there so they remember you. Hearing about Hong Kong is nothing like experiencing it first hand with the opportunities that Global Vision set up for us. One of the things about the Science and technology parks was really interesting. They have created two out of the planned three completely green buildings that are energy efficient in every possible way. In two years they plan on starting and finishing the last building of the three! That is very fast compared to how fast structures go up here! However, seven days was not long enough to stay in HK, but we still had a long list of things to do. Guangzhou was our next stop, and let me tell you, this city is impressive. The development in Guangzhou was incredible! From 2006 to the present year Guangzhou went from having dirt roads, and not many sky scrapers to a huge population increase, paved roads, a 150 kilometer metro system and amazing growth in the amount of skyscrapers and buildings. Also Guangzhou is home to the Canon Tower; which is the tallest tower in the world, which was built in only five years, and it is architecturally beautiful. There was so much to see here, but we only had three jam packed days to do it. Here we met the Consul General of China/ Guangzhou and one person by the name of Minster Li who gave us some information about agriculture in the five provinces in China. I found out that there is a Viterra stationed in Guangzhou. Overall, the five provinces of China had more to offer, like canola, wheat, barley, and sweet potatoes. Lots of natural resources are available there, such as mining. It was more interesting to learn about those aspects of China for me, and nice to hear about what I am familiar with back home. If you have ever heard of manufacturing companies, 26
Komaspec is an impressive company that manufactures designs from engineers. We had visited their factory and went behind the scenes to see the action of producing a variety of 400 different products every year. I have never been in a factory, but it is very interesting to see the process and system that they have going on in order to be efficient making the products. Also, in Guangzhou we had the chance to go to a watch, sunglasses and purse market…being a girl that sounds like a test to see how much you can resist. On the bus ride there, I just stared out the window and gazed at the amazing landscape and structure of the province. I couldn’t believe that only even years ago it wasn’t half of what it is today. The way the people work is amazing, they are so quick and efficient, and they created a place that is structured so thirteen million people are able to get from point A to point B the fastest way. It really opened my eyes to say the least. Leaving the province of Guangzhou was probably the hardest place to leave on the whole mission! I would have loved to stay and see more of the province, and get more information about the immense growth that it achieved in so little time, but the next stop was said to be even more impressive. Forty three kilometers from the north to the south, and a little over twenty kilometers east to west, Singapore is only 710 kilometres squared with a population of over 5 million people. It is said to be one of the smallest countries in the world, and only forty nine years old. Singapore is beautiful; it is home to Botanical Gardens, the Marina Barrage, and a huge port. greenery made me feel more at home, because Hong Kong and Guangzhou didn’t have much of it. We had amazing opportunities here that I was excited about. We had met the High Commissioner of Canada in Singapore, Heather Grant. We also met the director of the NYAA (National Youth Achievement Award) in Singapore, who gave us some amazing success stories about the power of the youth today. Also we went to the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) where we saw a 3D printer in action, and were placed in a room with three 3D screens surrounding us, and we put together an interactive game. It felt like you were inside the game! I have only heard of this technology and experiencing it first hand was something I only dreamed of. We also got to see the twin towers of Singapore called the Petronas Tower, and we also saw one of the most impressive water treatment plants. At this water plant what they do is they save all of the rain water in water catchments (in Singapore you cannot even collect rain water without permission), and they also save used water, but they treat the used water first and put some back into the ocean, and they use the rest of the treated used water with the rain water 28
to make NEWater. It is purified and safe for drinking, and this system is to prove that any water of any quality can be purified into something safe to drink. Singapore was the first country to come up with this system, and are
now getting recognized for it. During our stay we also broke into group sessions with high commissioners just like we did at the beginning of our mission. Now, Singapore is much like Hong Kong in terms of agriculture. However, I learned that ninety percent of the food that Singapore and Hong Kong require is all imported from other countries. That is a huge amount, but considering the land density there is no room for crops, and land to raise livestock. One other thing that I loved about Singapore was the diversity of all of the different cultures there. We stayed in a hotel in “Little India”, and even though we were in Asia we were surrounded by Indian culture everywhere in the area we stayed. People in Singapore were so friendly, and easier to talk to, because it wasn’t rare for them to see Canadians walking around on the streets. In Guangzhou, very few spoke English, so we were constantly trying to find people to translate for us. Singapore is one of the places I would go back to in a heartbeat. If you ever get the chance to travel there, take it! Singapore brought us almost to the end of our trip, but our last stop was Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Searching this place on the internet did not do it justice! The view from the hotel was amazing, even though it consisted of skyscrapers and a hazy continued on page 30

smoke above me, but I had started to get used to it by now. The first day there, we had breakfast with the high Commissioner of Canada in Malaysia. Throughout the whole mission I had wanted to visit a livestock yard to see the differences between the way that they raise livestock there, to how we do here. The only place on the mission that I had any hope in was Malaysia, but I would have had to travel four hours out of the city to get to one. With our schedule that day and only being there for three days it was impossible! That same day I had attended a meeting at Talisman Energy. You may have heard of this oil and gas company because it is stationed out of Calgary, Alberta. At this meeting I met Ian, who attended the University of Saskatchewan, and he knew my neighbors, pretty small world! This was a great way to end the last day of meetings in the mission. The next day we went to the Batu Caves where we saw lots and lots of monkeys. There was no doubt 30
people couldn’t tell we were tourists then. This brought us to the last day of our trip, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. One of the fun activities Global Vision had planned for us was “The Amazing Race.” In every place except for Guangzhou we had to go all over the city we were currently in, and get clues that lead us to the most important sights to see in the area! It was just like the television show; and we even had shirts that had the amazing race logo on the back! If you ever want attention when you are travelling just find an amazing race shirt and people will want to take pictures with you because they think it is the real thing! We had so much fun with that part of it. Doing these amazing races in three countries allowed us to see the amazing sights that each place offered, and let us have fun with it as well! It also made you work together in your team, and my team won the race in Singapore. Without this activity I would not have Charolais Banner • October 2013
been able to see the major sights, because of our busy schedule. I cannot possibly be able to list all of the sights we saw because of the amazing race! My first impressions of Asia were how hot and humid it was, and the overall weather. However, I was not looking at the big picture. For example, travelling out of Singapore in a five hour radius covers half of the world’s population. That is insane considering the area of the land that all of those people live on. I could not believe that when I heard it! I also didn’t realize that Canada has major ties with all of the places we visited! All of these countries have to work together in order for a stable and successful economy and growth. Going into this mission I never realized how much we have to rely on other countries, or vice versa. Trading happens every single day, and we depend on it, and I could not believe how blind I was to this. Having a global knowledge is key to continued on page 31
understanding the importance and value of the relationships between other countries. Being exposed to this has changed my whole insight on the world and how it spins around. You have to look outside the box, go out of your comfort zone, and let your curiosity soar into something that is unknown to you, and that is what Global Vision has allowed me to do. “Junior Team Canada brings the best and brightest young Canadians together, to give them hands on business experience and prepare them for success in the global economy.” This quote pretty much sums up my whole experience. Global Vision gave me the opportunity to have a hands on experience on a global scale. Being introduced to so many important people has not only opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that I can achieve, but I also learned a lot about myself in the process. Before I was involved with Global Vision I did not know what I wanted, and I was not someone who would be able to approach people with such importance. Since the trip, my
curiosity has gone through the roof, and I am much more confident in myself, and how I present myself. To be honest most of the people on mission were almost done university, or already graduated. So as a high school graduate my knowledge was
nothing compared to the others. Being surrounded by so many successful people is what really inspired me to explore my options and keep my eyes open because you never know what is out there.

We have some picks of programs that allow you to get into the keeper pen and find a great one. Helge came out to look at the heifer calves for the pick, and he asked if we would sell the full ET brother. So here he is – PCC GUNSLINGER 316A, Bull Calf Champion at the Olds Fall Classic. Gunslinger is just a March 1 calf, but he packs a big punch as you can tell when you stand behind him. He has a huge hip, big time top, Gunslinger is a proud rascal, always walking around showing himself off, as you can tell in the great photo Craig snapped of him. He is full brother to the heifer calves so he is backed with all the predictability they possess. We feel Madison is one of the very best females in the whole Charolais breed. I believe this is the 1st daughter of Diablo 2X to sell. He needs no introduction as he was the Denver Grand Champion bull of a year ago. By sale time we should also know the results of how his full brother Encore does at Farmfair. What we’re seeing of our Diablos is consistency. If you were to see his dam at Rod McLeod’s place you would know where that consistency is coming from. There is great hair on these calves. Our commercial bull customers loved the Diablo hair. If it’s important to them, it is to us as well, so when I see a heifer like 3098A with a great coat of hair, I know that part of the game is handled. I like this heifer. CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS
2013 CCYA Conference Wrap Up Courtney Black, Director
This summer youth from all over the country gathered for the 2013 annual Canadian Charolais Youth Association summer conference in Shelburne, Ontario. Throughout the week, amazing friendships and memories were made by all! The 2013 conference planning committee was made up of Holly Smith, Randi Aldcorn, Courtney Black, Emily Bromley, and Adult Advisor Billie‐Jo Saunders. Along with the planning committee, special thanks go out to this year’s nominees for the Honoree award: Brad Buchannan and Chester Tupling. The week started with a fairly new activity, an educational quiz all about Charolais cattle that was constructed by Mel Reekie. The quiz lasted about half an hour and everyone put a lot more thought into the everyday things involved in the Charolais industry! After the chores were done, the first day was ended with the annual mixer, run by the National Board which consisted of Kirstin Sparrow, Sarah Weinbender, Michael Hunter, Courtney Black, Holly Smith, Tomina Jackson, and Travis Jozwiak. This year the mixer involved mixing a cake on a national board member’s head, egg tosses, whip‐cream, water, maple syrup, flour and of course lots of paint! This activity is one that gets all the youth involved in making new friends from different age categories from all over the country! In the end, every youth member had a ton of fun and knew they belonged with the amazing group of people that attend the CCYA conferences! The following day included individual judging, team marketing, team selling, and keep and cull. This year there were lots of great animals, along with parent volunteers that helped out with individual judging in the morning. After lunch, everyone either participated in team judging or team selling. Along with many great 64
judges, everybody’s creativity shone through when it came to team selling. Later that day, everyone went to Chester Tupling’s farm for the Keep and Cull dinner. Amazing food was had, as well as a super informative night, as all the youth were further informed about traits to look for when keeping and culling Charolais cattle along with general information about the breed itself! It was a great evening for everyone! Day three started off with showmanship where the youth were divided up into splits within their age groups, followed by the showmanship finals. The judge was Ryan Hurley who was great at giving each and every member, positive and constructive feedback, which is always appreciated by the youth. There are always really great showmen of all ages, which make for a really impressive show to watch! After showmanship, R&K gave an incredible fitting demonstration to better prepare the youth for their team grooming later that afternoon. Along with their great demonstration, R&K Show Supplies was around all week to lend a hand to any youth member, whether it was what product to use, or general fitting questions, they were always more than willing to help. After lunch, team grooming started, along with individual marketing. Saturday was the last day of the conference, and as all youth could probably agree, the week flew by once again! Saturday morning there were the team grooming finals, followed by the Annual General Meeting. After lunch the closing ceremonies happened, where every province is represented by its flag, as well as some members carrying the Canadian and the CCYA flag. All parents and visitors are invited to this event and often love watching all the youth parade into the ring proud to be representing the youth of such a great breed. Conformation started shortly after the closing ceremony. This year there were a great variety of animals exhibited by the youth, judged by Pete Fritjers. The caterers made one last delicious meal for everyone and the awards were presented. Billie‐Jo Saunders was awarded the Honoree award for all her hard work and dedication towards the 2013 conference. The 2013 planning committee was incredibly thankful for everything she did as the Ontario Adult Advisor. When presentations were completed, the DJ took over and the dance started. It was a night filled with great music, great food, and great friends. Details about next year’s conference were explained and many of the members could hardly contain their excitement for next summer! The Canadian Charolais Youth Association national conferences are truly incredible experiences and are a summer must‐do!

The Annual Canadian Charolais Youth Conference and Show was held in Shellburne, Ontario in July. There were 44 participants with 47 entries in the show. This would be the first time in a few years where cattle have out numbered the participants. The sweltering heat during the event was hard on a few people, but nothing can wilt the enthusiasm of the youth and their desire to participate
in the various events. The opening evening of get down and dirty mixer activities planned and directed by the national board did not disappoint. Everyone always enjoy the games and parents are always surprised at how freely their children go into it with an open spirit for sometimes distasteful activities like dipping your face in a plate of whipped cream while searching for a

gummy worm. By the end of the evening, there is a team spirit that knows no barriers and everyone is part of one big group. Rollin’ Acres Charolais, Chester and Karla Tupping hosted the Keep and Cull competition in their new barn. Supper included fresh corn on the cob, terrific beef and Marie Saunders’ homemade pies. It was a fun evening for all ages. Brad Buchanan and John Reekie, two past CCYA Alumni served as Barn Bosses for the event and kept things running smoothly. Billie‐Jo Saunders was presented with the CCYA Honouree Award this year for her efforts in organizing this conference and show. It isn’t a small task and it’s good someone stepped up to the plate to make it happen. Three presentations were made during the show for 2nd Generation Awards. These awards are presented when a parent was a CCYA Conference and Show participant and has continued to be an active member in the Canadian Charolais Association and their son/daughter is a member and participant in a conference and show. Brent Saunders’ son Troy was a recipient. Saige and Kaycee, daughters of Brad Buchanan, were recipients. Madison and Logan Saunders were recipients as each of their parents,

Billie‐Jo (nee Reekie) and Darrell Saunders were CCYA Conference and Show participants. There was also a presentation from the TBar Invitational to the National
Board in the amount of $2270.36. This is the Charolais portion of the proceeds from the tournament, which is split between eight national youth associations for the breeds.
Next year’s Conference and Show will be held in Portage La Prairie, MB, on July 23‐26, 2014. Start making your plans now, I’m sure they will host a fun‐filled, educational event!

Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup
Canadian Western Agribition Judging Team 2013 representing Manitoba: (l-r) Rachael Verwey, Laura Tolton, Jared Preston and Kolton McIntosh
Seventy�seven Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta enthusiastic junior cattle producers attended the 6th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, August 2nd, 3rd and 4th, in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top notch group of interested cattle producers and 111 head of cattle. Manitoba youth must participate in this event to be eligible for the Manitoba judging team for Canadian Western Agribition. Two Charolais youth members qualified and will be participating at Agribition this year; Rachel Verway, from Portage la Prairie and Jared Preston, from Ste. Rose du Lac. 82
