Manitoba Angus presents 2014 Commercial Producer of the Year to Leaning Spruce Stock Farm Leaning Spruce Stock Farm is owned & operated by Elwood & Pat Shearer and Ryan & Wendy Shearer and their 3 children Kain, Jensen & Lexie. Elwood operated the farm starting in 1970. In 1990, Ryan became a partner and the farm name became “Leaning Spruce Stock Farm�. They own or rent a total of 5,000 acres. 3000 acres is pasture and the remaining 2000 acres are used to grow oats & barley, 250 acres for corn silage and hay for feed. Some canola is grown as a cash crop. They calve out 400 cows & heifers. Calving starts in March with the heifers & the shared herd with Botany Angus. On April 20th the cows start to calve on pasture where Angus stand out for the mothering ability to get their calf up & nursing. Over the years, the first Angus bulls were bought from Six Mile and Hamco farms for calving ease on Simmental heifers. In 1993 they started buying Black Angus bulls first at the RMWF sale from Greenbush Angus, then from the Cattlemen Connection Sale from Dryland Angus, Brookmore Angus and Mountainview Farms. They have also used bulls from Botany Angus, Prairielane Farms, Spruce Ridge Angus and Maple Lake Stock Farms. They have also been in partnership with MVF and Botany Angus in 2 embryo programs which made it possible to get some very high quality bulls & heifers to start a herd of purebred Angus. These cows are used as commercial cows & bred AI to produce some of their own bulls for in herd use. Ryan & Elwood like the Angus calves off of Angus bulls for calving ease and good lively calves that get up & nurse on their own. They like the Angus cows for their great mothering ability and great udders. All of these traits are ideal for pasture calving. Their marketing can vary from year to year. A large group of bred commercial heifers are offered for sale each year. Cows are culled on performance, attitude, udder quality, feet & legs as well as age. The cull cows and heifers are finished for slaughter and the fat steers are sold through P Quintaine & Son Ltd., going mainly out west. In the past semi-loads of fats have gone to eastern and western Canada and many loads have gone to the USA. Elwood has coached hockey for 20 years. Pat has just retired from many years of nursing. Wendy runs a small hair salon and Ryan does some clipping for bull sales. Kain, Jensen & Lexie all play ball hockey, each on different teams. This will be their 3rd year in 4-H as the next generation gets involved in the farm. What are the future plans for Leaning Spruce Stock Farm? Elwood says he would like to slow up a little!!! The cow herd may remain the same at 400 head. They will continue to offer quality bred heifers for sale and with the market like it is there are more choices. They can background calves and sell them or finish them to slaughter weight. When asked, Why Angus? They replied #1. Calving ease with new calves that are up and nursing in minutes. #2. Angus cows with great udders, great mothering ability & easy keepers. #3. Carcass quality, which is very important when finishing for slaughter to get the top grades!!! Angus genetics have been working for Elwood & Ryan and will do so for many years to come!

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Allan Nykoliation 2015 started off with our AGM in Brandon, there was a better turnout of members than other years. I would like to welcome our new directors, Jeremy Pilkey, Dylan Funk and Cameron Nykoliation. It’s nice to see these young breeders taking an interest in our association. CYL- OUR FUTURE YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE
2015 marks the 5th year for the Cattleman’s Young Leaders mentorship program in Canada. It has graduated 36 mentees and received countless hours of invaluable time and expertise from 39 mentors. The CYL program typically receives about 50 applications per year and in 2013 that number rose to 70. Program Description- Industry and Professional Mentorship Each year candidates are selected to participate in the CYL Development program. The online application process opens in November and the deadline for eligible candidates to apply is in late January. Semi-finalists are chosen to attend a round table discussion event where final candidates are selected. The CYL program admits young beef enthusiasts between the ages of 18-35 with a wide array of backgrounds in the beef industry. Once selected the candidates are matched with a mentor by a mentor selection committee. The CYL youth are all at different stages of their careers and come from different backgrounds in the beef industry. Youth in the program may be interested in learning more about a potential career choice in the beef industry, becoming more knowledgeable and well connected in their current career or want to learn more about what it means to be an industry leader. The CYL program offers two main categories of mentoring, a Professional Mentorship and an Industry Leader Mentorship. The professional mentorship program gives candidates the opportunity to pair up with agriculture professionals to get a jump-start on the careers of their choice. The professional mentorship would bemost attractive to post-secondary students and those just starting their careers that have a keen interest in a beefrelated profession. The Industry Leader Mentorship is tailored to active beef producers who exhibit leadership potential and are interested in learning more about how to become involved in leadership roles such as sitting on a provincial or national beef board. The mentee’s personal goals and ideas for mentorship areas are taken into careful consideration when they are being matched with their mentors. Once candidates are matched with their respective mentors the mentor/mentee journey begins. Through creation of an initial roadmap, the mentor and candidate set out the goals they wish to achieve during the program. Candidates are given a yearly budget of $2,000 to fund their participation in numerous industry events such as the ILC – CANADA (Calgary), the Beef Value Chain Roundtable (Ottawa & Calgary), the CCA Annual General Meeting (Ottawa), the CCA Semi-Annual Meeting (rotates through member provinces), related events and other opportunities in development. Through attendance of industry events, meetings with their mentors and the completion of the Masters of Beef Advocacy Program the candidates build upon their knowledge base and become highly capable individuals to represent and lead the beef industry into the future. The program benefits both parties involved by exposing a young person to elements of a potential career choice and being an extremely rewarding experience for the mentor perhaps even rewarding them with an employee down the road. In our Manitoba Angus industry, a number of young producers have benefitted from the program. Here are some of their stories.

In 2012 I applied for the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders program and competed in the finals in March of 2013.
I made it through the selection process to become one of 16 CYL candidates for the class of 2014. I worked closely with Heather Travis who at the time was the Director of Public Relations for Canada Beef. We worked closely together to create an informative Youtube video titled “Making Hay While the Sun Shines” which can be found on the Anderson Cattle Company’s Youtube channel. At the time many consumers believed that grass fed beef consumed grass for it’s entire life and that grain fed beef consumed grain it’s entire life. My video strived to show consumers that all beef cattle eat some form of grass throughout their life whether it was fresh or preserved. We have a list of ten additional video’s that I am working on covering a range of topics from silage production to hormone levels in beef cattle. Heather is a master of weaving multiple marketing platforms together to tell a story to consumers. Through my time with her I gained a much better understanding of how to communicate with customers through social media. By using more engaging content focused on story telling rather then sales promotions I have been able to triple my followers on social media as well as reach a new younger customer base. The highlight trip of my CYL experience so far was the Semi Annual in London, Ontario where I was able to get to know my fellow candidates as well as past CYL graduates. The negotiation and board governance training was invaluable and have been a great resource in my business teaching career. I highly encourage other young producers to apply for the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Mentorship Program. The networking experiences are incredible because you can meet industry leaders, young producers in other breed associations, commercial cow-calf industry and the cattle feeding industry.

Manitoba Angus Annual General Meeting Report This year’s AGM was once again held at the Victoria Inn in Brandon on Jan. 3rd, 2015. There was a small group in attendance, but those members braving the cold weather, participated with vigor and there was some excellent questions and good discussion. Guest Rob Smith CEO of the Canadian Angus Association brought greetings from Calgary and was available for questions. Reports were reviewed and several new ideas were discussed regarding modernizing promotion of the breed in Manitoba and suggestions for changes to the Newsletter with some more color pages. These ideas were noted and will be discussed by the Board of Directors at their first board meeting. Watch for upcoming changes in the new year. We were very happy to have 3 new board members agree to go on the board to fill the positions of our outgoing members. They are Cameron Nykoliation, Dylan Funk and Jermey Pilkey. Their write-ups to introduce them to the membership will appear in another part of this issue. Communications Update: by Cameron Nykoliation Bull sale season is coming into full swing and as I am sure most people are aware, more and more people are getting their information over the internet as opposed to traditional methods. The MB Angus Association is taking efforts to better help our membership promote their cattle, and in turn the breed, through social media and the website. We have started a Twitter page and have revamped the Facebook page to make sharing information easier and more accessible than ever. If you have pictures, sale orders, Angus news, sale reports or anything else Angus related share it with us and we’d be happy to share it with our followers at no charge. We are planning a full revamp of the website so keep watching for that. We also are looking at adding a bull sale calendar and possibly a “cattle for sale” section on the website that would allow MB Angus members to post information about their cattle for sale at no charge. Canadian Directors Report: -by Shawn Birmingham
2014 has been a very challenging and rewarding year. Starting off with a very wet spring we were blessed with record high cattle prices in the fall. The way things are going in the cattle market it seems we are in for a few good years of higher priced cattle. As many of you know there have been a few changes made in recent months that affect all members of the association. Due to the troubles and slow turn around time many members have been experiencing with Quantum Genetics, the board has decided to use the services of Delta Genomics of Edmonton. This change has been very beneficial to our members and Delta has proven that they can provide our members with parentage verification in a timely fashion. As a result of the uncertainty surrounding the DNA testing, the board has also decided to delay the implementation of the parentage verification policy until 2016. This means, in order to register a calf off of any 2016 bull. That bull needs to be both sire and dam verified. Likely the biggest change that has happened in the past 25 years for our association is the new fee schedule that will be implemented January 1,2015. The new fees will allow our association to continue to grow by adding additional member services and allowing the association to have financial stability for many years to come. This is a major change for many members, but as a young member myself, I believe this is the right thing to do. We as an association must continue to grow our breed and ensure we are able to compete with the many other breeds that are trying to ride the successes of the great Angus breed. We must strive to develop new strategies and tools to ensure our members have every opportunity to achieve success on an individual basis and as an association. I wish everyone a joyful and successful new year and encourage anyone to share any ideas or concerns with me at anytime. Happy calving!

CYL PROGRAM

• I was involved within the CYL Mentorship program during 2011 • I was matched up with Harry Haney who had previously owned and operated Independent Breeders at Crossfield, AB. My goal was to develop a better understanding and working relationship of the international export of Canadian beef cattle genetics. Throughout our mentorship we ended up exploring a host of of various topics ranging from family business succession planning, the importance of personal relationships during international business transactions, and general industry topics. • A couple of the things that I have taken from the program and used within our operation include the power of social media marketing and smart phones. Following the 2011 Fall forum held in Calgary where Kim McConnell delivered an excellent heartfelt presentation to our group about his thoughts on the future of agriculture, marketing and rural communities; I purchased my very first Smart Phone and haven’t looked up since! Through our operations social media presence we have established many new business connections and solidified existing relationships with our customers. Another thing I took away from my involvement in the CYL program was to foster a willingness to adapt to new technology and actively become a leader within the industry. In 2013 we established an online female production sale and are looking forward to many more in the future in addition we will be hosting our 1st Annual Online Bull Sale March 2st – 5th. I have also recently begun to utilize genomic selection tools within our breeding program and believe that this technology will become increasingly popular as our industry moves forward. • I tried to attend as many of the CYL program events as possible during my time in the program. I attended the Fall Forum, Calgary Stampede, The Five Nations Beef Alliance Young Ranchers program in both Mexico and Canada. One of my highlights was partnering with McDonalds Canada at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair to visit with McDonalds customers about where beef comes from and answer their questions. Working with McDonalds for those couple of days was a great experience. My belief that Farmers need to do a better job of sharing our stories of what we do to produce the food that feeds our countries families three times a day was firmly reinforced. As Farmers we have a very important role to play in the education process. • I encourage all young cattle producer to apply for the CYL program for countless reasons. The personal growth opportunities, international trips, developing a broader understanding of the beef value chain, the widening of your industry network and the countless lifelong friendships that you will establish are only a few of the great things this program has to offer. Take the time to fill out the application then get involved you won’t be disappointed!

-My involvement in the CYL Program initiated in early June 2014 with graduation likely to occur in late March. My mentor is Denise Lafrentz from Wheatland Cattle Co. of Bienfait, SK. Going into the program my primary goal was to learn from someone who has balanced raising a family while being intimately involved in the daily management and details of a purebred cattle enterprise. - A few of the big picture points I have taken from Denise are by continually holding yourself to a high standard and working toward a vision for your life and/or business you will ensure success-even if it takes more time and effort than you anticipate. Moreover, having a small or moderate sized herd won’t inhibit breeding, selling and exhibiting quality cattle if done in a methodical and stringent manner. -Our initial CYL experience was the semi-finalist trip to Calgary in March 2014 for roundtable discussions to determine 16 finalists. In August, we travelled to Ontario to visit business headquarters and agricultural companies that ranged from regional to international in scale. This trip provided a glimpse into a very different agricultural foundation than I am familiar with in Western Canada. Next, I will attend the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention and Trade Show in San Antonio, TX in early February. I am anticipating a very informative and enjoyable experience based on all feedback I have ever heard regarding the event. -The highlight of the program so far was to have Denise and her husband, Vern, join us for our first on-farm sale in early December. For them to take the time to attend and visit for a couple days was very humbling and fulfilling for me. I also look forward to doing the same and attending their sale late in March. -The CYL Program is unique for any young person with a cattle enthusiasm because it allows you to explore and discover knowledge in specific disciplines or areas of interest that are potentially beyond your current scope or resources. The organizers do a phenomenal job of matching your criteria of passions and interests to a mentor that has a really unique skill set, knowledge or level of experience within those criteria.

How to be profitable / and learn gross margin analysis 2. The grazing concepts and the practical side of intensive grazing 3. Winter grazing strategies. * I was a able to “cut my teeth’ at intensive stop grazing this summer. We are trying bale grazing for our cows this winter, and I am currently in the process of completing a gross margin analysis for my business *I attended the Calgary Stampede and worked at the Cattle Trail, attended the CYL Summer tour in Guelph Ontario, I won the trip to the Five Nations Beef Alliance Conference/Tour in Texas, attended the Western Canadian Grazing Conference and CYL Fall Forum in Edmonton. Cheesy Potatoes
½ cup melted Margarine 2 cups Sour Cream 1 can sliced mushrooms 2 cups Cheddar Cheese, shredded 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 can Cheddar Cheese Soup 1 large Onion, chopped Salt & Pepper 1 kg package of Hash browns

Whether you fit into this category or not the "Canadian Angus Foundation" and the Canadian Junior Angus Association have expanded on awards, scholarship and bursary opportunities for you, the Juniors in 2015. Listed below is a brief description. For a more detailed explanation of the many programs that will assist you in furthering your career go to www.juniors.cdnangus.ca. 1. Self Directed National and International Travel Bursary - one needs to apply at least 15 days prior to the event, must be 18 - 30 years old, and provide a budget for the event which would have educational purposes relating to the beef cattle industry. 2. Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Award - requires a NOMINATION by a CAA member by April 15 - nominee between ages of 22 - 30 - award announced at Canadian Angus National Convention, receives $3500 award plus promotion and publicity of their Angus cattle operation. 3. Junior Angus Stockman of the Year Award - requires a NOMINATION by a CAA member, by April 15 - nominee between ages of 16 - 21, winner receives $3500 bursary to be used for genetics, cattle supplies/equipment, training etc. - award presented at Showdown. Five finalists will also receive $250. 4. CAF Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Competition - apply by April 30, applicant must be at least 18 years old. The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth representing the CAA. Will have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and several major agricultural events in Canada. Five finalists will be chosen, they will email an essay by May 20, speak at the Canadian Angus Convention in June and receive a finalist trophy buckle, a $1000 scholarship as well as up to $500 to off-set travel costs to Convention. The winner will be announced at the Convention banquet. 5. US Exchange trips to the Junior Red Angus Association of America’s Round-up in June and the National Junior Angus Association LEAD Conference in August are available through the CJAA. Deadline to apply is May 10. In return members of the JRAAA attend Showdown and members of the NJAA attend GOAL. 6. Dick Turner Memorial Award - a $1000 award presented to a Canadian Junior recognizing overall achievement in Angus commitment, community involvement/leadership activities. - applied for by May 15, minimum of 18 years old, submit a resume as well as a 250 word essay on future career goals and plans. Awarded at the Canadian Angus Convention. 7. Showdown Travel Bursaries - two $750 bursaries for assistance to go to Showdown. Apply by June 1, applicant must be 15 years or older. If chosen, a complete report is to be submitted to Belinda within 30 days of Showdown. 8. Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships – three awards given in the amounts of $2000, $1500 and $1000 per year. Deadline to apply is June 15. Awarded by the CJAA at Showdown. 9. Goal Travel Bursaries - four CAF as well as four CJAA for a total of eight bursaries in the amount of up to $750. Apply by December 26 for the GOAL Conference in February 2016. Applicant must be 15 years of age or older, submit a resume and answer questions relating to attending GOAL. 10. Foundation Legacy Scholarship - must apply to CAF by January 10, 2016, minimum age 18. Five finalists will be chosen and must be present at "GOAL" conference for an interview and panel discussion. Three awards given in the amounts of $5000, $3000 and $2000 and $500 for runner-ups. Winners will be presented at GOAL conference. We also offer heifer vouchers, two at $3000 and two at $2000. These vouchers are drawn for at GOAL and Showdown from the participants at each event.

Lead with your bulls
By Steve Suther, Director of Industry Information, Certified Angus Beef LLC Does it pay to target commercial calves for the premium quality beef market? At Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB), we get that question a lot. Now that all calves are worth so much more than they were a few years ago, what difference does it make if we aim for quality, or not? In the short run, it probably doesn’t matter a great deal, but it makes sense to get in position for the long run now, when you can afford to. Several U.S. producers have discovered that stacking generations of above-average marbling genetics can build commercial herds capable of producing 30% Prime or better, often at $200 per head premiums. When you sell bulls this year, they may bring half-again or even twice what they did a couple of years ago. Of course you try to put yourself in the buyer’s boots. They trust you. They study the numbers ahead of the purchase and try to make sure the bulls will improve their herd. You earn that trust not by “people skills” alone, but through leadership and foresight that anticipates demand in light of genetic research and the latest selection tools. You stand behind your bulls and your customers know that. What more can you do? Read the signals that say it’s time to join in the market trend toward higher quality beef, and lead your customers there with bulls that are above breed average in marbling, while balanced and strong in other economically important traits. You have already read the research reviews, so you know there are no negative correlations, no price to pay in terms of functionality. All you do is add marbling as you build the best genetics for the next generation. You and your customers may be somewhat disconnected from the “grid marketing” world in which more and more feedlots sell finished cattle to Canadian packers, especially if they sell calves at weaning. But with the rise of information technology, buyers increasingly keep track of sources. They know where the high-grading cattle are and they will come back to bid more next year. Cattle feeders want uniformly predictable growth and grade, so one emerging area of customer service is to become proactive in building relationships with feedlots, channeling feedback to your bull buyers and helping them cull from the bottom end as they build on the best. A typical pen of cattle has $1,000 difference in value from top to bottom these days, but the most valued strings of cattle cut that in half. You’re fortunate to be producing a breed of cattle that can literally do it all, even without cross breeding, although many customers will continue that practice for several good reasons. Recent discussions in the U.S. have concluded there are legitimate reasons for choosing to maintain a product-focused straightbred Angus program, just as there are for crossbreeding. The key is that either approach must follow a plan from start to finish. END

So now... the Top 10 CAA Highlights of 2014:
10) As a member and industry educational and networking
opportunity, our initiative with Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLP, Carcass 101, has been a goal for a number of years now. We offered the first intake last June and are satisfied and inspired by the outcome and evaluations. Accordingly, we will be offering an enhanced Carcass 101 again this year. 9) Last February 1st we commenced mortgage payments on your new national headquarters. We budgeted for it and were confident we could afford these payments without impacting our monthly cash flow. I am so proud to be able to say that, at the end of this first year of an additional $22,185.17 payment each month, your CAA managed the new expense without taking from reserves or a single dollar from our line-ofcredit. 8) In early 2014 we started offering EPD-blending which gives us daily updates based on submitted data for every animal in the CAA Herd Book. We heard your input that two or three evaluations each year were not current enough, particularly when our friends in the American Angus Association have a weekly update. Our new 'in house' capabilities to generate not only daily EPDs but genomically-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) assure our members' information is truly current, even 'cutting edge' based on TODAY'S data. We continue to enhance how we offer Member Services to and for you and are always excited to 'make real' your suggestions leading to greater efficiency or ease for you and your fellow CAA members. 7) I include this every year, but here it is once again... the 2014 National Convention. One notable difference this year, and a real highlight, was the number of "Young Breeders" in attendance as well as the number of honoured guests we were able to fete. Please note that our 2015 National Convention is in Calgary and we desperately hope to see you there! 6) Undertaking the Female Longevity and Sustainability Project, with unprecedented support from Provincial Associations and the Canadian Angus Foundation. This project comes about as from member input for the need to assure structural correctness through the creation of objective standards in hoof, leg, udder and teat phenotype and their heritable genetic predictor. We completed the initial phase of this project and are looking at various grant and partnership opportunities for the genetic testing phase. 5) The continued success of the Foundation's "Building the Legacy" sale, which broke $120,000 in donations this year; who thought just 2½ years ago that we'd triple the donation . 4) In September, 2013, I pledged a turnaround time to the Board of Directors that was vastly less than we'd achieved historically and, in fact, even less than our standard '10 working days', or two weeks, for most of the year. I am so very proud of the reduced turnaround time that our Member Service Team has provided with top shelf service. When we surveyed your Customer Satisfaction last fall, you rated an 87.3% ‘Satisfied’ result and I am very proud of this level. Knowing that 10% indicated our customer service must be better, we will spend the next year working to better serve you and also increase the number of 'Highly Satisfied' members. As a secondary highlight, 69.1% of the CAA membership

supports the new Parentage Verification policy becoming effective for sires from which purebred calves will be registered and who are born on or after January 1st, 2016. It is always good when democracy works; it does when 'the people' speak. You spoke and your preference has been shared with the Board of Directors for their current and future reference and information. 3) In February, we debuted our CAA Communications Strategy, including a new member communication platform. In the Member Renewal / Winter/Spring Calving Inventory packages mailed to every member of the CAA last January, we asked each member what your communication preferences are. We have been tabulating these results throughout the year and updating every member file with this important... and required... information (annually subject to your review and update on your CAA Member Details form e-mailed or mailed to you). We dubbed 2014 our "Year of Member Communications", and the year culminated in the launch of AC-TV last month, which has been viewed over 700 times in the last month. For those of you who do not use computers, tablets or smart phones (about 20% of our membership), you were mailed your own DVD copy of the inaugural AC-TV in January. We fully realize that a complete transition to electronic communications does not satisfy the needs of a number of our members and that is why we have your preferences determined; so we can reach you in one of your Top 3 preferences for being communicating with. from the I to III sale?! The generosity of our members continues to humble and amaze me and we owe such a debt of gratitude to all the donors of semen, embryos, 2) Prices for all classes of beef cattle, from feeder calves to bred females, across both commercial and purebred sectors. We are in a period of record prices with more revenue than a Canadian cattleman has ever sold their fats, calves, culls, bred cows and heifers and bulls for! Nothing is more rewarding than the positivity emanating from you and the rest of our CAA membership. There is merit to believing that we see "all good things to those who wait"! Producers have been waiting a long time to get rewarded for their hard work and top quality cattle... and that reward is here now, and, based on the analysis of my fellow agricultural economists, is expected to remain for some time to come... like, YEARS! 1) Creation of the next 5-year CAA Business Plan, entitled "Enhanced Member Services: Building Our Future...Yes We Can!" I am so proud of our CAA Board of Directors for their foresight, strength and generative thinking leading to this new 'roadmap' for our business operations for the years 2015-2019. There is much to come and much more we look to you and your fellow members to provide input toward and regarding. This Business Plan relies heavily on cooperation and collaboration with the membership so please get involved when you see the opportunity to do so.
What do we most look forward to in 2015? Well, here is a start to the list... a) Enacting the Board's Ownership Linkage / CAA generational consultation plan for 2015 per the new Business Plan; b) Re-launching our website in early 2015 and excited to have it better reflect the needs of our membership; c) World Angus Secretariat in Durango, Chihuahua and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico next October; d) Continued strength and excitement in our cattle business with prices that allow cattlemen to not only realize profit but consider expansion or creative means of succession. Manitoba Angus presents 2014 Purebred Breeder of the year to Ramrod Cattle Co. RamRod Cattle Co. began in 1983 with the purchase of 4 cows from the Dusty Daele Angus dispersal. Over the years, purchases have been made from reputable breeders such as Lenlook Angus, Shondril Angus, Youngdale Angus and Kenosee Park to mention a few. We now have around 160 head with most of these being Black Angus, a few Red Angus and 20 commercial cows. RamRod is a family operation with everyone taking part, depending on school and other commitments. Since we have been raising Angus for 30+ years, we have seen different trends come and go from one extreme to the other, and we have made our share of mistakes. However, we have found that by sticking to our goal of raising highly functional females, who wean as close to 50% of their body weight as possible, and never concentrating on single traits, that we strive to produce cattle that live up to the expectations of their ancestors from long ago. Our summers are spent hooked up to a fifth wheel trailer and travelling as much of the summer show circuit as possible. This year we also showed at Manitoba Livestock Expo and Agribition. Most of our females are sold by private treaty but we consign regularly to the Keystone Klassic Sale and are one of the original members of that sale. Our bulls are sold annually at the Cowboys Angus Bull Sale at Taylor Auction, Melita, MB. This year the sale is on March 28th. We feel very honored to have been presented with this award, and it has special meaning being nominated by our fellow Angus producers, who like ourselves have a love for good Angus cattle. Manitoba Angus Assoc. welcomes Three New Directors to the Board. My name is Dylan Funk, and with the help of my dad Ron, we run a herd of purebred and commercial Black Angus cattle on a farm three miles northwest of Snowflake. I have been around cattle my entire life and was involved in 4-H for 10 years. In 2004 I purchased my first purebred black Angus heifer to show, and she became the first foundation cow in my herd. After high school I attended ACC in Brandon and received a diploma in Agribusiness while continuing to stay involved on the farm. In 2011, after my parents had a dispersal, I retained some of the commercial cows and along with my purebred cows started Eton Six Cattle. I am currently in my second year as a director at Southwest Bull Development Centre and sell bulls there every April. I continue to add cattle to my herd through dispersal sales and consignment sales like the Keystone Klassic. I believe this is a must attend sale each year for breeders looking to add progressive genetics to their herd. I am very excited for the opportunity to be a director with the Manitoba Angus Association and to become more involved and meet new people within the breed. There is a lot of optimism in the cattle industry right now and within the Angus breed and I wish all breeders a safe and prosperous calving season. HI my name is Jeremy Pilkey and I was born in southern Saskatchewan, and I have always been involved with cattle. I met my wife Kerry in Alberta and we moved back to Rossburn, MB, where her Mom and Dad have a 100 head of purebred Shorthorn cows. Originally, we started out with 10 commercial cows that we bought from Kerry's Grandfather. It wasn't until about 2006, that we bought our first purebred Black Angus bull from N7, and our first 3 purebred Black Angus heifers, which calved that following spring. From then on, we slowly built our herd which today consists of about 75 cows of which 70% are purebred animals, and we run 3 purebred bulls. I have been taking bulls to Douglas for about 4 years, and I was just nominated to a three year term this year. I have worked for the past 7 years as a pen rider at the Hamiota Feedlot, where I am involved in the animal health side of things.

HI my name is Cameron Nykoliation and together with my wife Kaitlin and daughter Madison, we operate NYK Cattle Company at Douglas, MB. We have been involved in the Angus breed for many years along with my parents Jerry and Wendy Nykoliation at N7 Stock Farm. We raise purebred breeding stock predominantly and enjoy showing our cattle at various shows and fairs across western Canada. We currently have about 25 Black Angus females and 10 Limousin females. We sell our yearling bulls calves privately off the farm and plan to market select females through consignment sales in the fall. Times are good in the beef industry and I hope we can channel some of that enthusiasm back into promoting this great breed in Manitoba.

Douglas Bull Development Center Update By MBCPA President Kurtis Mckee Hi Everyone! The optimism in today’s cattle industry is second to none and it is a very exciting time to be a part of this great industry! This year at the Douglas Test Station marks the 51st Annual Douglas Bull Sale which will be held on April 4th at 1:00 PM. Cattle in motion will be providing internet bidding and videos of all sale lots once again this year! We have just finished the 56 day reports and the cattle are doing very well! We have 148 bulls being developed this year with 8 breeds represented. 84 of these are very high quality Angus bulls that will go out and make a positive impact in the herds they will be used in. The bulls are only fed to gain 2.5-3 lbs a day so anything above this is genetic superiority and efficiencies in the cattle. The bulls have a current ADG of 4.06 lbs/day and a WDA of 3.37 lbs/day. There are also 28 Angus, Simmental and Shorthorn heifers being developed for the sale as well! They are fed to gain 2 lbs/day and they are currently averaging 2.73 lbs/day and have average WDA’s of 2.85 lbs/day. With longevity at the forefront of everything we do at the test station we can guarantee you great success with making your next herdsire purchase at our superior bull and female sale, backed by our great group of consignors. Letter from your CAA President—Corinne Gibson Welcome to 2015. The past year has been a great one in the cattle industry and 2015 looks to be even better. I am so proud of the hard working; determined and innovative cattle breeders that have rode out the storm and are finally getting paid an honest dollar for their product. I have been the President of the Canadian Angus Association since June 2014. The time has flown by. It has been an interesting experience. I sincerely want to Thank each and every member that contacted me personally to give me your views, comments and concerns. Your association needs your voice. I even want to Thank the members who felt the need to call me “special names” as a part of a constructive criticism – your voice is important too! Without direct input – it is difficult to gauge the consensus of the membership, so we appreciate your direction. As you may be aware, almost half of the Canadian Angus board were new directors this past year. These new directors have hit the ground running and I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm they have all shown. At our September meeting we did a lot of visioning for your association with many key goals set forth for the future. Goals such as the best customer service in the cattle industry; increased membership linkage, advanced tools and technology and improved communication strategies. From that came the realization that to implement these goals we needed increased income and limited expense increase. Plain and simple. We have a brand new office that is creating member equity every day, but of course, we used our reserves to fund this sound investment. So, with all of these things in mind and the fact that a comprehensive fee increase had not happened since 1989; we have increased many of the fees. None of us like increases. Least of all my husband! I am in this with you - with a lot of calves to register and my sole livelihood comes from Angus cattle. However, I do not know of a single thing that is still the same price as it was in 1989 – not even the hairspray I used to used for my big 80’s hair. Please feel free to contact me, our CEO or any of your board members to discuss any concerns you have. As, I said before, we sincerely want to hear from you. So as I wrap up my year as President, we have some exciting things planned for the National Convention that will be held in Calgary at our new headquarters. We hope to see many of you there. South West Bull Development Centre

South West Bull Development Centre is in their 21st year of operation. The focus at South West is Red & Black Angus and Hereford bulls. Bulls at SW come from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. We weigh the bulls every 28 days and record avg. daily gain and wt. per day of age but the bulls are not fed for maximum gain. They are given a ration that consists of 45% oats, 5% supplement which includes a mineral package and a protein supplement as required and 50% roughage (grass/alfalfa). This is a complete ration and is processed at the Bull Development Centre and it is self fed to the bulls. The ration is designed for the bulls to gain 3 lbs. per day and with the quality of the bulls we have at SW they do not have a problem achieving this. On this ration the bulls do not get over conditioned but are well grown and look great. The bulls are wintered in a 10 acre area. Feed & water at one end, resting area in the middle and lots of room to travel. The program at South West was designed with the commercial cow man in mind. Sound well grown bulls not carrying excessive fat cover that have had lots of exercise for the entire feeding period. Although designed with the commercial man in mind South West does have bulls that have found a home in prominent Purebred herds in the province. Each year we usually have bull in the Development Centre that have been sired by bulls that have come out of the South West Bull Development Centre an this year is no exception. Before Sale time the bulls will be ultra-sounded, tested negative for BVD & semen tested. EPD’s will be available on all bulls. 32 Red Angus bulls, 19 Black Angus bulls and 3 Hereford bulls will be on display until April 11th, 2015 at South West.
Sale day is April 11th, 2015 and the bulls will be sold in the Oak Lake Community Hall on video.

CATTLEMEN’S CORNER Calving Intervention Strategies and Review
Term cows that show evidence of an elevated level of discomfort, such as tail extension or colicky behaviour, without progression for over six hours should be evaluated. Discomfort from false labour should not last for extended periods. Vaginal examination poses no danger to the calf if the vulva is cleansed thoroughly with obstetrical soap and gloves are worn. Occasionally, the animal will not be in labour as evidenced by a completely closed cervix and an intact mucous plug obstructing the cervical opening. Imagine feeling around the inside of a basket ball until you run into something that feels like a doughnut; the open cervix will allow at least two to three fingers to pass through the middle. Generally if the cervix is partially opened, one should be able to pass at least a portion of their hand through the entire cervix. Re-evaluate the cow in a couple hours to determine if cervical dilation has progressed. Surgical intervention will be required in the case of failed cervical dilation. Unlike the vaginal opening, the cervix cannot be manually dilated by applying pressure. Some cows may be suffering from uterine inertia where the uterus fails to contract and expel the calf despite the cervix being open. Although the calf is not being stressed, delivery of a live calf is dependent on intervention. A completely twisted uterus will block entry and will produce bands of tissue that twist towards the blockage. A person will only be able to insert their arm just past the wrist in most cases where the bands of tissue will impede progress and feel like the twisted end of a tootsie roll. Lesser forms of a twist may allow access, but will still block delivery. Twists impair the ability of the uterus to nourish the calf and it may become weak or die. Although the uterus itself is likely in a compromised state, delivery may require caesarian section if attempts to detorse the uterus are unsuccessful. Intervention is warranted if the water bag is present for more than two hours and the cow is not trying, no progression for thirty minutes of active labour, active labour stops for more than 15 minutes, abnormal delivers, or at any time where the viability of the cow or calf is in question. Evidence of a prolonged birth includes swollen head and tongue, yellow (meconium) staining, cows with vaginal swelling and rectal bleeding. If the placenta appears first, premature separation has occurred and the calf may already be dead; speedy intervention id the only hope of delivering a live calf. Deviations in position and posture may be corrected if they can be achieved without damage to the calf or cow. Breech births, where the calf’s tail is often presented first, can be corrected by gently pushing the hind end/hocks forward/ upward while cupping the feet in your hand and drawing them into the birth canal. Whenever attempting to correct postural deviations, your hands should remain between the part of the calf being manipulated and the uterine wall to prevent damage to the uterus. A proper head snare, and not just a string around the bottom jaw, should be used to correct the calf’s posture when the head is back. The calf’s jaw can be broken and the cow’s uterus torn with overzealous manipulation. To determine if assisted extraction id possible and appropriate place the chains above the first joint with a halfhitch below the joint but above the hoof. Apply pressure by hand alone to determine if the shoulders ban be brought into the pelvis one at a time. The amount of force should be limited to the force of one person per leg. Exceeding this rule may result in delivery of a calf, but risk irreparable damage to the cow/calf. The calf can be delivered by forced extraction if both shoulders can be brought into the pelvis simultaneously. During extraction, the calf should be rotated onto its side to allow for easier passage of the hips through the cow’s pelvis. If the tips of the calf’s feet are facing down, the calf may be backwards. Backwards calves present a greater dilemma due to the potential for oversized calves to block when the ribs attempt to enter the pelvis and lead to protracted deliveries and a dead calf. Due to the risk, determination of the potential for assisted delivery should be limited to the force exerted by one person. If both hocks can be fully exteriorized, then forced extraction can be attempted. No downward force should be applied during the extraction of backwards calves. Breech and backwards calves are often indicative of twins; always check to see if a multiple birth to maximize calf survival. Twin delivery is based on determination of a pair of legs belonging to the same calf. Place a chain on one leg and follow it to the body and then back to the other leg. Once a pair is identified, double check that the joints of both legs bend in the same direction. Gently repelling one calf while delivering the other may be required. If attempts to resolve a complicated calving have not progressed within 30 minutes, call for veterinary assistance. Dr. Corey W. Jones D.V.M. Story of the days leading up to the Champion Female at Agribition 2014 “Just a Cow “- N7’s BLK Woodlady 2T and her calf N7’s Blackwood Lady 48B co-owned by N7 Stock Farm Crandall, MB and NYK Cattle Company Douglas, MB.
In late May I usually begin selecting my show cattle for the summer shows across Manitoba . Every single halter broke cow at my place had a bull calf. I went out to Mom and Dad’s one weekend in May to look for a cow with a heifer calf. I came back to the yard to inform Mom and Dad that I wanted to take 2T and her calf on the show road. My parents both looked at me in disbelief. Almost in unison they both replied, “You can’t show 2T. She’s just a cow.” I replied that she was halter broke and had been shown as a yearling and despite being 7 years of age, she looked pretty good. At first Mom and Dad were reluctant but after some negotiating Wendy gave in and saddled her horse to help round up 2T. After a few weekends of “re-halterbreaking,” a clip job, and some feed 2T was ready to hit the show road. The grand finale of the summer shows in Southwestern Manitoba is the Harding Fair on the third Friday in July. Over 100 head of purebred cattle show up to make it the largest summer show in the province. N7’s BLK Woodlady 2T and her calf were named Champion Angus Female at Harding and went on to win Supreme Champion Female Over All Breeds and the Ron Sangster Memorial Award. Allan’s wife Carolyn is Ron’s daughter making the award extra special to our family. The winner of this award receives an invitation to the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina SK. This show is considered the “Superbowl” of cattle shows and is the grandest stage to present your cattle in Canada. When I spoke to Mom after the show about it, I was already making plans for Regina in November. She interrupted me to say, “You can’t take 2T to Regina. She’s just an old cow.” Again I insisted that we push on. The next show for 2T was Manitoba Livestock Expo (MLE) in Brandon MB on Nov 5-8. Again 2T and her calf were named Senior Champion Black Angus Female and then were crowned Grand Champion Black Angus Female and a second qualification for the RBC Supreme in Regina. We were absolutely thrilled. We had never won champion before at such a large show. Our story could have ended right here and we would have been very happy! Later that week 2T, as Champion Black Angus Female, competed in the Supreme Breed Extravaganza at MLE. N7’s BLK Woodlady 2T and her calf were announced as Supreme Champion Female and we were ecstatic. CWA is the largest cattle show in Canada , 2014 was the National Angus show over 500 Angus were exhibited.As a double qualifier for the RBC Supreme 2T had a special “Qualifier” banner over her stall area that drew quite a bit of interest as the week wore on. As Thursday drew nearer I grew more and more anxious. After doing so well in Brandon I was sure that we were due for a letdown at Agribition. TIme to pull 2T and her calf into the trimming chutes and start getting them ready. By this time I was getting more than a little tense. My goal, as stated to Kaitlin earlier in the week, was to place in the top 2 of my class. Little did I know that goal would seem pretty insignificant in a few short minutes.2T entered the ring for her class proudly. Her and her calf stood perfectly and with a wave of judge Jay Holmes’ hand, we were called into first place in our class! I was trembling like a sheet of paper in the wind. After receiving our ribbon and awards, we re-entered the ring to compete against the other classes of cow-calf pairs. Kaitlin and I both admitted after that we were the most nervous for this class. As the judge walked up and down the rows our hearts sank as he left us and headed to the far end. We were sure that 2T’s run was over. He then turned, quickened his pace, and reached out for my hand to congratulate me! 2T was National Senior Champion Black Angus Female at CWA. I hugged my cow, then my wife, collected our banners and ribbons and made a victory lap of the show ring. There was little time to relax however as we were about to compete for Champion Black Angus Female against all of the other division winners. continued on Page 66

Donor dams must be approved to register progeny regardless if the owner of the calf owned the dam at the time of the flush or not, streamlining paperwork on calves resulting from embryo transfer and especially those resulting from purchased embryos. Females that have a flush recorded at the office have been automatically approved and such approval is permanent. To be ‘Donor Dam Approved’, a female needs to: be parentage verified; have all current owners of the dam sign the Application for Donor Dam Approval form and pay the fee of $100; tested if there is a known carrier of any genetic condition within 2 generations of her pedigree (for which there is a DNA test available).

Bulls will now need to meet these requirements to be ‘AI Approved’: DNA tested and sire verified (sires, born on or after January 1st, 2016, of purebred progeny will need to be parent - sire and dam - verified); tested if there is a known carrier of any genetic condition within 2 generations of his pedigree (for which there is a DNA test available); One current owner of the bull sign the Application for A.I. Approval form and pay the fee of $100; On the application form the owner will designate the bull as either ‘Owner’s Use Only’ or ‘Public Access’. If they choose ‘Public Access’ then anyone who meets all other registration eligibility will be able to register progeny from him, or exactly like how we have treated A.I.approved bulls in the past. If designated as ‘Owner’s Use Only’ then only listed owners of the bull have the right to register progeny. An owner can designate other breeders who are not listed as an owner authorization to register progeny similar to a Sire Authorization Form on a walking bull. All bulls which have previously been approved for A.I. use will remain so.

“JUST A COW” continued from pg 58 We pulled into our spot in the class and tried to calm our nerves. 2T and her calf were getting tired of the show ring by this point and were not standing as well as they had earlier. As Kaitlin and I both struggled with our nerves and our cattle. Again the judge made his laps and then stopped to give comments. When he set his microphone down and walked back into the ring I almost couldn’t hear a thing for the sound of my heart trying to jump out of my chest. My friends later joked that they could see my heart beating through my shirt and vest! As the judge approached, I looked at 2T to ensure she looked just right. I turned just in time to see him raising his arm and leaning in to slap 2T. We were crowned National Champion Black Angus Female at CWA! Cheers erupted from the crowd as our friends, family, and fellow breeders acknowledged our big (albeit unlikely) win. This time I hugged Kaitlin first, then the cow, and proceeded to collect our prizes, shake hands, and bask in the glory of this possibly once in a lifetime opportunity. We were met ringside by our parents and friends with hugs and handshakes. Dad leaned in and I said, “Pretty good for “just a cow”. Later CWA staff would confirm that 2T is in fact the first Female from MB to ever win Grand Champion Black Angus at Agribition! The next couple of days were a blur of handshakes and sales pitches as everyone wanted to see the cow from small town Manitoba that had just made it big. There was only one class left for at CWA that week, the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge. Our win at CWA had made 2T a 3-time qualifier for this prestigious event, a feat not often achieved. As a CWA champion we are among the last animals to enter the ring for the RBC Supreme. The extra time was appreciated for getting our cattle ready but my nerves began to get the better of me. We entered the ring under the watchful eye of five judges, to a roar of cheers from our family and friends. We pulled into line and waited as the judges made their evaluations. We left the ring for the judges to evaluate the bulls and then reentered for the final announcements. Supreme honour went to an outstanding Simmental Cow-Calf Pair from Rancier Farms of AB. We left the ring with our heads held high though. Never before had we been able to compete at such a high level. It will take a long time for the magnitude of 2T’s accomplishments to sink in. She will retire from the show ring as a Champion. The plan is for her to return to Crandall to Mom and Dad’s and enter into an embryo flush program. Pretty darn good for “just a cow.” 2T and her calf are on the cover of this Outlook. Congratulations to the Nykoliation family on a job well done. Thanks to Cameron Nykoliation for this story.
