Throughout the generations pickup trucks have become an important part of a cattlemans operation

Steak House

by Bryce Burnett

The grub looks great the cowboy thought as he was escorted to a table. The waiter poured some water, then proudly pointed to the menu label.

The Real Cowboy by Bryce Burnett

You can always tell a real cowboy by what he carries in his old pick-up truck. Now you'll find most anything there but it's there for a reason, not merely just by luck. In the cab there'll be a shirt or a coat tucked in a weird sort of fold, Left there from when it was to hot, or waiting until it gets cold.

On the seat are a pair of pliers and a screw driver for when he gets himself into a bind, Underneath is a syringe with a bent up old needle just waiting to poke him in the behind.

In the glove box you won't find any gloves, just some crumpled up bills and an unused truck manual in that plastic pack. A hand full of staples, some twenty-two shells and a tattered notebook with cow numbers from at least three years back.

Welcome to our establishment he said, it's a pleasure to serve you monsieur. By the cut of your clothes and that cowboy hat, I take it you're a steak connoisseur. We offer a porter house steak, 8 ounce prime rib or 12 if you so wish. Two sizes of sirloin, new york cut or filet mignon with baked potato side dish.

We can cook 'em welldone, medium rare or even easy over smothered with mushrooms, salsa sauce, or bacon bits with a sprig of parsley clover.

The cowboy ordered his favorite steak and waited for his meal, When a tall gentleman sat down at the next table, looking lost somewhat surreal. The waiter approached and said welcome sir: Can we order you a steak today? His complexion was pale as he replied: Just a tossed salad will be okay. The waiter whispered to the cowboy as he gave his shoulders a shrug. Ordering a salad in a steak house, kind of like asking a hooker for a hug.

A can of snuff, a golf ball, a pen and a coffee cup, They're all thoughtfully placed right there on the dash to help hold the windshield up. And in the back to handle with care is a partial roll of old barb wire, A tire iron and a jack bounce around on top of that worn out old spare tire.

A broken fence post, a bundle of twine and a fishing pole complete with bait, And thrown on top is an old rope halter that might find itself closing a gate.

But our load wouldn't be complete without the accompaniment of his very best friend No it's not his wife telling him which way to turn, it's his dog, waiting to piss on his tire again.

Cattle will be ready for viewing Saturday morning, then join us for a complimentary Beef-on-a-Bun before the Sale. Drop by to view the sale offering at the Ranch anytime.

It's good to have a friend when there's some important decisions to make

...then for the real big problems you just have to get right in there!

John Albert Howlett In Loving Memory of

August 12, 1941 - July 16, 2011

As the years go by they take with them those that we hold dear to us. John Howlett left us in July to go to – as he put it – a better place. John was a neighbour, bull buyer, joint venture partner, a good talker, a better listener and most of all a great and valued friend. I always looked forward to John's visits, he would wander over to see how we were making out and how the bulls were growing out this year. He was always interested in our operation and what was taking place on the cattle front. The discussions usually started with cattle and could end up any direction from there. John and I solved the worlds problems on many occasions and we both agreed to conclude that common sense was not very common anymore. I'll miss your visits John and especially memories and recollections of the old timers, but I thank you for sharing and being a vital part of our operation.

BLACK ANGUS YEARLING BULLS

Does Your Cattle Breeding Program Fit?

Final Answer - Sire of Lots 1 to 5

As purebred cattle breeders regardless of the preferred breed or type of critter a seed stock producer must set goals, maintain or have a valid reason to change them and have a program as to the direction and type of breeding stock they desire to breed and promote.

FINAL ANSWER has become an icon in the Angus breed. He has remained sound and produced semen until 11 years of age and sired functional sons and daughters. We have used Final Answer in our AI program to produce functional low birth weight bulls, maintaining performance and soundness. Over the last three years of using Final Answer the average birth weight of his calves in our herd has been 77.5 lbs with an average gestation period of 277 days. The pedigrees of these Final Answer bulls have been stacked for calving ease with sires like Duff Encore and Duramax on the mothers side. The average actual weaning weight on these 5 bulls was 802 lbs.

Here is a very strong calving ease bull with an interesting pedigree of Encore and Image Maker in this first calf heifer. Weaning off at 800 lbs he has great Indexes.

Different operations and people have varying opinions – everyone manages and sets goals differently. What works at one place may not work at another. So if our management program fits in with yours – here is an opportunity. If it doesn't – sorry we ain't changing. The cattle we raise must adhere to our conditions in short grass country. We breed our heifers to calve in February before the main cow herd starts due date of March 25 - April 1. We have followed an AI breeding program here on the ranch every year since 1971. Guess I'm an "old timer" cause that's 40 years. For the last 15-20 years heifers and cows have been synchronized with one shot of prostaglandin with an AI breeding duration of about 5 to 7 days. The AI bulls we use are moderate framed (under frame score 6 closer to 5 even better – although we have made the odd exception), under 90 pound birth weight and excel in performance. We calve out about 50-60 heifers yearly. After one calf they become a cow. Cows graze out all winter one mile from home headquarters and calve out there on native prairie. We don't split cows into groups and feed 3 and 4 year olds special or 12 and 14 year old cows special. A cow is a cow, either they make it or are culled. Heifers calve in February, cows in April the calves are weaned normally the third week of October.

At the Burnett ranch not all types of critters fit into our breeding program. I have heard purebred breeders say "We have a few of each different type of purebreds so we have what any customer wants." Well you won't find that at the Burnett ranch. The big 1800 pound slap sided cows do not do well on our ranch. The big boned 2700+ pound bulls that have 100+ birth weights won't find work at our ranch. And big fat show heifers that weigh 1500 pounds certainly aren't the norm here.

Selection of bloodlines possessing correct feet and legs, user friendly udders and moderate easy fleshing are the norm in our breeding program. Why should they not be – that's what most discriminating commercial cattlemen and cattlewomen demand.

The bulls have all been fed a growing ration to target a gain of approximately 2.8 to 3 pounds per day, maintaining adequate growth but not been pushed hard. All bulls have undergone a reproductive evaluation by Cattle Care Vet Clinic and will be sold sexually sound. Most cattle breeders now put bulls in the breeding fields in June or July. Therefore these bulls will still have approximately 2 months to continue growing and developing before the breeding season commences.

OCC MISSING LINK 830M offers a new and exciting bloodline to our line up. I talked to Tim Ohlde in Nebraska and asked him if he had any Black Angus bulls which were under frame score 6, birth weight 70 -80 pounds, deep, thick, good feet (not shallow) and would pass on great udders. He said "You're not asking for much are you?" Well he recommended we try OCC Missing Link. So we did. We think his calves are going to perform as expected. They have the thickness and depth. The average birth weight of his calves last spring in our herd was 79 lbs with a gestation period of 281 days. The average actual weaning weight on these bulls was 701 lbs with most of them from heifers. So I'm thinking that Missing Link semen will probably find its way into our AI tank again this year.

DURAMAX 6N was a bull we purchased from B.J. Cattle Co. Before we bought him we measured him. He was 24 inches wide across the shoulders and hips and 48 inches tall. Half as wide as he was tall. He also measured bigger around the girth than from head to tail. These measurements were taken at a year of age – proving him an exceptional bull and the type you will look a long time to find. We used him extensively for many years and have many of his daughters in our herd. Duramax will contribute to calving ease on the mothers side of many pedigrees. The average birth weight of Duramax calves in our herd over the years we used him is 79 lbs with an average gestation period of 278 days. His pedigree offers calving ease, depth, thickness and a great disposition.

Burnett Wind 33Y Birth: March 21, 2011 - 81 lbs

We have strived to select AI bulls and develop a breeding program which is in harmony with calving ease as well as performance. Although many associate calving ease with birth weight (as do we to a degree), there are other factors that come into play. I have often thought that birth weights should be like buying t-shirts: small, medium, large and X-large (don’t want to go there). Consideration should also be placed on genetic make up (bloodlines), environmental, and management practices. I have become aware that gestation length is a contributing factor. By using bulls which pass on shorter gestation periods to their calves they can attribute to calving ease. We have concentrated on bulls with gestation lengths of 270 to 280 days. The average gestation length (benchmark) for the Angus breed is 283 days. From our first calf heifers this year we have had calves born from 270 to 291 days gestation, The 270 gestation calf weighed 72 lbs. lively, up and going. The calf from the 291 day gestation weighed 99 lbs., layed around for a day. He'll make a good steer – cause we won't pass those genetics on. You will find bulls in our offering with pedigrees stacked for lower birth weight and shorter gestation and therefore should be compatible for breeding heifers. By calving ease stacked pedigrees we refer to low birth weight and short gestation length on the sire side as well as the sire of the mother.

You won't miss this guy in the bull pen. Look at his weaning weight of 950 pounds and he carried it right on to yearling. This is an exceptional bull.
