At UP, student publications such as the Philippine Collegian have a long-standing reputation for fearless reporting and advocacy Through both reporting and commentary that grapple with pressing social issues and question the administration, the Philippine Collegian illustrates the ability for true student representationfoundthroughindependence Theirsuccessinconfrontingissueslike these suggeststhatstudentswhengiventhespacetoreportonanissue canengage in effective advocacy for their respective peers and create a space for critical conversation In contrast, Pateros Catholic Schools publication PCS Courier, currently operates under the oversight of the school administration While this setup iscommoninmanyprivateinstitutions, ithampers thepublication’sabilitytoactas anindependentvoiceforstudents ThePCSCouriermustaimforindependence, soit canvoicestudent issuesandconcernswithoutfearofadministrativebacklash Advocatesofadministrativecontrolusuallyarguethatsuchmeasuresareneededto protectthe institution'sgoodnameandthatcontentpublishedshouldrepresentand alignwiththeschool'svaluesorgoals Withoutoversight studentpublicationsmight distribute misinformation or engage in sensationalism that could damage the schoolsimage orworse, servetheinterestsoftheveryadministratorswhoimpose such restrictions This avoidance is like looking in a cracked mirror and seeing the image of the school shattered in front magnifying its voice cracks in its imperfect system Fear of controversy is a sign of poor defensive instincts and deep selfawareness of institutional weakness Yet this perspective is utterly misguided, built that control is necessary to protect the institution and its consequencesoftruth Ironically, itis thiseffortatcensorship udent

Likewise, independent publications are not to avoid contentious topics or challenging conversations, but to welcome them, creating space for diverse opinions and challenging critical thought Here in the Philippines, there are notable examples of student publications that have consistently upheld these values Forinstance, theUPNewsletterhasahistoryofinvestigativereporting, often exposing issues related to student rights, tuition fees, and campus safety By addressing these concerns, the publication reinforces the importanceofstudentvoicesinadvocatingforchange

TheLaSallian, theofficialstudentpublicationofDeLa SalleUniversity, givesa persuasive example of independent journalism in action This publication has been active in discussing important issues such as mental health, academic policies, and social justice, creating a space where students can share their experiences and opinions By tackling these topics the La Salle Green Giant exemplifies how independent journalism can contribute to a more informed and engaged student community Furthermore, the Ateneo de Manila University’s, The Guidon, serves as another vital platform for student expression It has been known to report on campus governance issues and advocate for transparency within the administration, showing that student journalismcanholdinstitutionsaccountableandpromoteacultureofintegrity By following the examples set by the University of the Philippines and advocating for the independence of the PCS Courier they should operate withouttheconstraintsofadministrativeapproval, allowingthemtofulfilltheir crucial role in advocating for the needs of the students and ensuring that the truthispresentedwithoutsugarcoating

Students, as advocates for free expression and transparency, must stake a claim on the independence of their publications Doing so will ensure that schools have positive environments where student journalism can flourish, creatinggenerations ofjournalists thinkers andleaders

The future of student journalism depends on it a commitment to independence is a commitment to truth, accountability, and the unyielding spiritofinquirythatembodies theverynatureofeducation

A Few Pinches and A Pound of Salt: What Stings is Merely the Truth

Multilingguwalismo: Isang Diskursong Pang-akademiko

E D I T O R I A L

In the bus stop of Manila, I wait, The hum of engines, the weight of heat, Yet it's not the city's pulse I feel, But a quiet ache beneath my chest A longing, tender, unspoken, deep

A glance from the corner of my eye, A familiar silhouette, Lost in the rhythm of the crowd

And there you were, out of place, A wanderer beneath the sky

I couldn’t help myself as the words spill out, "Are you lost in the city too?"

It’s just a question, simple, plain

But it carries so much more, A hope I don't dare voice aloud

You met my gaze, serene and calm,

Your smile a quiet answer, “No, I was just wandering ”

Your words float, unaware,

And in that space, something stings, so rare

I wonder if I, too, am lost

Not in this city, but in you

Are you too busy chasing dreams?

Or do you even see me here,

A quiet presence waiting unseen?

I watch you, your thoughts far away, Absorbed in paths I cannot tread, And though my heart lingers in silence, I can’t help but admire you still The way you live, the way you shine

So I'll keep my feelings tucked away, A question unanswered, unsaid, Wandering beside you in the crowd, A nameless face in the city’s hum, Where questions float and hearts stay numb

The world is fast asleep, and a faint orange glow from a secondfloor apartment building window illuminates the darkness at half past two There's a deafening silence surrounding the four corners of my bedroom walls I've stared at music sheets far longer than I have played a single note My bow, untouched, remains in a continuous meter of rests The rusty, rosin-dusted strings were a reminder of everything I wasn't

I've always had a burning passion surging through my veins for creating pulchritudinous cadences of melodies Who'd listen didn't matter as long as I knew I was wallowing in the luxury of my artistic expression But now, it felt different Notes felt hollow and incomplete clamorous and turbulent, unlike before Will I ever achieve the sweet greatness I've oh-so-yearned for?

Being able to play is a different story from actually creating a legacy There's no roaring audience, no prestigious concert hall my name isn't and will never etch into the minds of millions My music will never be as inspiring as the works of world-renowned artists The weight of doubt sinks in, my chest is heaving, and the air in the room feels thick I've realized that I perhaps wasn't destined for this extravagant dream

I look back at the clock an hour has already passed The ticking metronome in front of me felt like a bomb about to explode at any given moment, slowly waiting for the right moment to detonate Time, that's what I needed, but the world won't stop revolving purely out of my desire to slow down its tempo Sighing, I hover my calloused fingers upon the glossy wooden instrument I should give this another shot Alright, here goes nothing

1 2 3 Push! Those were the last words her mother heard when she had only her older sister as her daughter And then, there she was a once super chubby baby with dark lines and pigmentations scattered across her neck and underarms A sweet, clingy girl who loved to sit in front of the TV, watching Dora, sipping her milk, and clutching her favorite pink blanket with fluff she’d often chew on

Sooner or later she grew, didn’t she? A girl who valued change but feared it all the same She loved change because it gave her the idea of carrying herself alone, but she feared it because it meant facing her downfall A queer soul who silently attests to her battles fighting them with a heavy heart but always managing to wear a smile that disguised the storms

[So far], she still believes no, I still believe that life is full of challenges and opportunities And as I am soon to begin my

college diaries and step into adulthood, I want to carry all the life lessons I have had and those I have yet to encounter as the days pass by

It’s okay to take a break, I tell myself It’s okay to pause It’s okay to feel whatever you want to feel, and it’s okay to let the world slow down for a moment It is completely okay to get your heart broken, to cut your bangs shorter when boredom strikes, to let your mind rest after being overwhelmed by a million little things

It is completely fine that my only real achievement this year is getting rid of the bad days To my younger self, you are not hard to love as love will always find you because of how you perceive it, how you nurture it and how you give it without hesitation

Anyways, as I grow older, I hope to see and value life and love as deeply as my mom did when she gave birth to her two daughters
