As I write this article, all eyes are on Hurricane Dorian and the possible impacts on our region and members. Stay safe and let’s be prepared to help those in need should a worst case scenario occur. It is with great sadness that we announce that our oldest member, Billy Grabowski, passed away recently. Billy lived to see his 100th birthday but left us after a series of setbacks. Billy was active in PCA for many years and autocrossed until age 91! Not only did he autocross, he was very competitive and always willing to help in any way he could. One of Billy’s trademarks was to use his age as his car

number….so the last set of numbers Billy used was 91. I’m sure you will hear many more “Billy stories” in future articles, but know he was a great person and sportsman and will be truly missed. Gold Coast Region has had a great relationship with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and for 2019, JDH was our primary “go to charity”. If you went to the Porsche Parade this year it would have been hard to miss the custom PCA surfboards on display and wonder what happened to them. Thanks to PCA National, the surfboards were offered to be auctioned off for a Gold Coast Region

charity. Three of the surfboards were auctioned off at the Parade banquets on Friday and Saturday nights raising a total of $19,100.00 for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. A 4th surf board was donated and later presented to the hospital as an inspiration to the children. A huge thanks to Lana Henning, Shaun Kopczynski and Dennis Halmai as the winning bidders for the surfboards. A “big check presentation” was made and the surfboard will receive a commemorative plaque before it is mounted in a well-traveled area of the hospital. BTW Lana also donated one of the Kiddie Porsche Boxsters the kids
at Joe DiMaggio use to travel from their rooms to treatment areas……A big thanks to Peter Olliviere for chairing the JDH efforts and exceeding the $20,000 donation goal set earlier in the year. In the next few weeks, GCR members will be invited to cast their votes for Officer/Director candidates for 2020. Please review the bios published in the September Kassette and on the website. Members who want to get more involved with supporting the club are encouraged to volunteer their time and skills to help with the running of our various events. As you attend our events you will notice these members taking leadership roles in the events. The nominating committee also looks at these members and recommends members who have shown the commitment and leadership skills that are required for the board or officer positions. Members will be sent a unique invitation to vote electronically to the e-mail address of record from Election Runner, our independent election vendor. It should take less than a minute to vote, so I encourage you to participate. Also, on the ballot will be an opportunity to vote on a major revision to our region’s bylaws. While the look and feel of the proposed by laws is similar to our current bylaws, there are some significant revisions. To start with, PCA National encourages regions to update their bylaws every 5 years and provided a region template to use. This new template was our starting point and provisions unique to GCR were inserted. One of the primary differences is the provision for electronic voting. Some of the other changes involve provisions against conflict of interest as well as standardization of regional committees and term limits. Please review the proposed bylaws on the website. I would like to thank the bylaw review committee consisting of Kyle Rathbun, Chair, and members Roger Fabel, Bob Varela and Christy Brigman for presenting a final product that was approved by the GCR Board of Directors and now needs to be approved by the GCR membership before it can become effective.
The first major “post parade”event was the Sanibel run, which proved to be very popular and included a series of activities that provided fun for all. This event has been getting bigger and more popular every year and now can be counted on as one of our annual summer activities. Check out the article and pictures in this issue of the Kassette. A huge thanks to Rick Veingrad for chairing this event and his team of volunteers for taking care of the details. Also, a huge thanks to Sophia Lopez and Porsche of West Broward. for providing staging and registration areas as well as coffee and donuts. So what’s in store for the rest of the year??? Currently in the planning stages are the following: AutoX...Steve and Dottie have 1 “for sure” AX scheduled for Sept.7 and 2 other events in the maybe stages...All depending on the availability of a site at a reasonable cost. We are working on several options and as a last resort, may do 2 events in one

day at the same site. If that happens the events would be run back to back, with a changing of the course after the first event. Watch your e-mail blasts for more info on future autocross events. Socials...We have several big socials planned (in addition to our Porsches & Pancakes and our Third Thursday happy hour. Look for a new member picnic, a holiday party at a car museum and at least 1 other major social. Charity...GCR will be participating in 2 children’s hospital drives in December... Stay tuned for more on this Concours...Look for information on Porsches-by-the-bay...our premier car show of the year. Tours...A Larry Wilson Museum tour is planned for late September and a multi-day drive to the Fontana dam in the mountains of North Carolina is scheduled for the last week-end in October. Editor’s Notes In the last issue I asked for feedback about your experience at Parade and I received two articles from members about how much fun they had in Boca. We have had three Parades in and near our region. I would like to thank the members for their articles and the volunteers that worked to make Parade a success. This is the first Parade I have seen PCA help the local region with their charity program. Look for more details in the near future on our charity program. I would like to thank our social team who have stepped up our events in all three regions. Many of our members look forward to drive and dine events and this year we have some out of the region and one out of the state. Keep up the good

My First Porsche Parade by Bill Buchalter I am at the stage in life where I can (or should be) able to enjoy the fruits of my physical and financial labors in order to pursue the dream of my retirement, whatever that turns out to be. Even though having owned three Porsches previously, I joined the PCA about 18 months ago with my 2016 Targa 4S because I felt it might enhance my retirement goal of getting involved with something other than the real estate business. Although still working part time in New York, I have a home in Stuart, Florida and my younger partner is assuming more of our business responsibilities, which in turn gives me more time to pursue the pleasures of Porsche ownership and PCA membership.
for some type of contest or show. There was a middle aged man standing next to a vehicle that was propped on front wheel jacks with klieg lights trained upon it for illumination, and a pair of female legs extended from underneath. It was hot and the guy was sweating profusely. I had to ask him what was going on. He replied that his partner was cleaning the wheels and brake calipers with some sort of tiny swap in order that it might pass favorable inspection the next day. As a novice Porsche Club member, this type of detailed preparation was totally foreign to me and it prompted me to sarcastically ask him if his house was kept in such a fastidious condition; and I also asked why he wasn’t under the car doing the work? He stated that “she is better at it and enjoys it as well” and this was their eighth time participating in event like this. Well, this led to a 30 minute friendly discussion about the levels of participation in the concours and how I too could do that. I told him that unfortunately, I don’t think I could get my wife to go under the car. Even so, it was a great introduction of the fellowship for the days to come, and I hadn’t even yet registered. This was definitely the place for Porsche people to gather because there was nothing other than Porsche cars, accessories, equipment and services on display or for show. The seminars guided the novice and the advanced on how to prepare your car for a concours. There were technical discussions regarding engine performance and a seminar on
Having attended several rallies and meetings in the Gold Coast Region, I decided to try the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton this past July. My wife Elizabeth (not being a full-fledged car enthusiast) joined me for two days. The other days I decided to be a volunteer as the best way to learn about the organization and what makes people so crazy about this brand. My first experience as I pulled into the enclosed multi-story garage reserved for attendees at the Boca Resort, and started walking toward the hotel lobby, was the display of Porsche vehicles both old and new being cleaned, polished and prepared

the historic and future potential values for Porsches at which one of the experts stated that “the Porsche you hate today, may turn out to be the darling of the future!” Rally instruction and participation was for anyone who was interested. Radio controlled cars apparently were not just for kids. Can you believe a sand sculpture commemorating the Porsche Parade in the middle of the lobby? There was a great supply of sunglasses, pens and other knick-knacks as vendors sought to have you remember their brand. Lots of give-a-way and door prizes just for attending and participating. Great food was offered at the special evening events if you decided to participate. Otherwise, several hotel restaurants featured some very good fare. Because I live relatively nearby. I did not participate in the many special tours and events outside the hotel designed for adults and children. One evening I went uptown to Boca beer garden for dinner where some of the locals appeared very enthusiastic when they learned about the nearby Porsche Parade; and particularly impressed when seeing the top of my car fold into the trunk! It may have been the beer talking. I had the privilege to work with setting up the display of historic race cars that we unloaded from their carriers just before dawn. In some cases, we pushed these vehicles into the open auditorium doors where one of the experienced show leaders knew exactly where they were to be placed. It was great to meet some of the owners and quite amazing to hear the stories associated with each vehicle. It was probably all the better for the story
teller when they had someone like me who had never heard it before. As part of the volunteer responsibilities, I was to make sure that no one touched the car in the wrong way. It really wasn’t an issue because just about everyone who came into the room had a definite respect and awe for these historic vehicles, as some of the owners stood proudly on the side willing to answer questions about their cars. I also volunteered for the Art Show display which although not heavily attended, showed the enthusiasm and excitement that many PCA members just have for the brand from all age levels and with all types of media. Having been formerly in the art business when I was younger, my first question was “are any of these items for sale?” I was told that it was an amateur event so that it would preclude anyone from getting money from it. But I couldn’t help chatting it up with some of the artists who definitely had salable items in my opinion. I learned that Parade registrants could take advantage of the resort’s health club and a special “mineral bath” for only $25 dollars. That was cheaper than the fee for just using the spa for the day. And I probably ate $25 worth of nuts and candy that they had offered for anyone getting the treatment! Since it was included in the registration fee, I stopped on my way home at the Palm Beach Raceway where Pirelli Tires was allowing 10 minute demonstration rides in Porsches equipped with their brand and a competitor’s brand. It looked like a lot of fun but not sure if you could discern the difference after driving
a lap around the track one time. Everyone seemed to enjoy it though. There were many more programs and events that one could participate in or get involved with. As a “newbie” to a Porsche Parade, I probably could have benefited

from the pre-parade instruction workshop that was given by our local club, but unfortunately I was away. Maybe next time - but I will have to travel to Palm Springs, California where the 2020 Parade will be held.

From the Members: Parade 2019 Report by Alejandro Vazquez
I’ve been a fan of all things Porsche since I was a 10-year old kid watching the Twin Turbo 930s, 935s and then the 962s as they dominated the endurance races in both the 24 hours of Daytona and the 12 hours of Sebring. The cars and their drivers represented the pinnacle of endurance racing. Since then, I’ve raced both cars and motorcycles up until a few years ago when I decided to get to know the finer aspects, elements and events that bring together the great looking Porsche cars of both yesterday and today along with their very friendly and approachable owners. So it was a no brainer that I had to attend the 2019 Porsche Parade being held in our very own back yard for the first time since 1968. If you’ve ever attended a Porsche Parade, you know how overwhelming the registration can be for all of the events offered throughout the week. Thankfully, talking with some of our members that had attended parades of the past along with the informative articles offered in our very own Kassette proved to be very helpful. My wife, Jeazette, along with our 18 and 16-year old kids even got to take in some of the activities being offered. There was definitely something for everyone.

The plan for my first parade in our hometown was to volunteer as much as my work schedule would allow. What better way to learn about all the nuances of the event, as well as help welcome Porsche Fans from all over the U.S. My plan did not disappoint. I even got my wife to volunteer with me for the Kids Parade set-up and registration. I have to say, that was the most enjoyable experience of the week. The time spent volunteering. We met folks from all over the place and got to hear some amazing stories about how long they’ve been attending this event and how meaningful it was to them. We ended up getting along very well with a couple from New Jersey, Phillip and Christine Howley. So much so, that we met them for dinner on Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale and we’ve kept in touch since then. It’s always nice to make new friends. Next, I always make it a point to learn new things so I decided to volunteer for the Parade Concours as a timer and runner for the group of judges evaluating the 914s. The detail that goes into all the aspects of this event cannot be accomplished without all of the volunteers. It was great to see the amazing and beautiful cars and talk to the owners about all of the

prep work that went into their entry but what I found even more special was the level of detail and commitment displayed by the volunteers at this event. That level of pride is, unfortunately, not seen at most jobs these days so it was quite refreshing. To sum it all up, it was a great week, I look forward to doing it again, and I would recommend that everyone who is a Porsche Fan, do this at least once in his or her lifetime. See you next year at Palm Springs, CA for the 2020 Parade.

We are a very active region with many types of events for our members. Events are held from the Florida Keys to and beyond our Northern Region border. When planning an event please contact the Social Chair to check for date availability. All event dates may be found in the Kassette and on the web site calendar. If an event date is canceled or needs to be changed contact the Social Chair so that the update is reflected thru all of the channels.

Porsche Sanibel Run Overnight Rick Veingrad, Sanibel Run Chairman
On Saturday, August 24, approximately 7:30 in the morning, about 70 Porsches began arriving at Porsche West Broward in Davie, Fl commencing the annual drive over to the Southwest Florida Coast to the Ft. Myers Beach/Sanibel Island area. Sophia Lopez with Porsche West Broward provided coffee and donuts and welcome bags to participants. An additional 25 cars met us at lunch in Ft. Myers for this multichapter get together. After driving across Alligator Alley led by Richard Akirmaian’s Blue Porsche, the group drove the scenic beach drive to meet up at Doc Fords Restaurant in Ft. Myers Beach for lunch. The restaurant features waterfront views overlooking the beautiful Estero Bay. After lunch the group made their way to the host hotel, the Sanibel Harbour Marriott, parked in the covered garage parking reserved for us and then spent the afternoon at the resort Pool, Tiki Bar, and Porsche conversations.

That evening, we held a dinner for the approximately 190 guests at the nearby Lighthouse Restaurant located at the Sanibel Harbor Marina filling the restaurant, bar area and waterfront patio too. During the dinner, we held a charity raffle to benefit Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital located in Hollywood, Fl. Proceeds from the raffle go toward funding, for example, the very popular electric Kiddy Porsche Boxster’s. The hospital uses these cars to transport kids to and from medical procedures and around the hospital. Rick Veingrad, Sanibel Run Chairman and MC for the raffle, received over 20 certificates and prizes (just a few examples: two Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance tickets valued at $200, Foreign Affairs oil service coupon, and a Pinnacle Souveran shine kit donated by AutoGeeks valued at $200) that raised almost $2000 for the evenings event

Also helping in pulling the winning tickets for the charity raffle were Zone Rep Lisa Lewis and GCR board member Peter Olliviere. Sunday morning at 10am, the group met at Salty Sams Marina in Ft. Myers Beach for the Sea Racer Boat tour. The special Speed Boat can accommodate up to 130 people. The tour lasted 90 minutes cruising Ft. Myers Beach in the Gulf and watching the dolphins alongside the boat. A lunch was held after the tour at the waterfront Parrot Key restaurant at the same marina. We ended the weekend on our final stop at the popular Sun Harvest for some fresh Florida citrus, fresh juice, bake goods, and of course the orange and vanilla soft served ice cream.

Notice of GCR Election for 2020 PCA/Gold Coast Region will be holding our election for Officers and Directors for next year as well as presenting Bylaw revisions for adoption. Voting will begin on October 15 and conclude on November 15, 2019. The following candidates have been nominated to run for Officers: President Steve Kidd Vice President Kyle Rathbun Peter Olliviere Treasurer Carolynn Ditrichs Dale Huber Secretary Dottie Kidd The following candidates have been nominated to fill two open Director positions for a one-year term at this time: Ed Blair, Roger Fabel, Cynthia Fluhart, Randy Gananathan, Ian Gerada, Ed Kohly, Mike Koller, Rick Veingrad If only one nominee is submitted for any office, then that nominee is deemed to be elected.
