Hello, everyone! Welcome to November! I hope you and your families have recovered from Hurricane Irma. We had several “events” in the Gold Coast Region in October that are worth mentioning. On October 14 we celebrated Oktoberfest at Biergarten in Boca Raton. A good time was certainly had by all! We once again proved that large pretzels are, in fact, a meal! On October 14 we also had an AutoX. As usual, driving Porsches is never a bad idea! On October 15, GCR elections opened. My personal thanks to the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and volunteers that helped to put on the events last month.
One cannot discuss events in November without talking about Thanksgiving! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your families and friends. Take some time to give thanks for all that you have – including your Porsche! GCR elections close on November 14 so get your votes in while you can. Please see the Kassette for the candidates and their biographies and vote for those persons that you feel will be good for GCR. Also, on November 19 please join us for Porsches By The Bay. Assuming that the weather cooperates, it should be a fantastic event with spectacular cars! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the
first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. Editor’s Notes Welcome to our winter season in south Florida. I know you are thinking what is the difference in our mostly warm climate with the exception of a few months that are in the 70’s you are correct. From my point of view I am looking at the PCA event calendar and this is a great time of the year. The hurricane caused us to cancel the New Member Picnic in the northern area but we will reschedule that event. Two upcoming events, OctoberFast and Porsches by the Bay have flyers in this issue with more details about these events. This year we will not have an awards banquette but we are planning a central location event for next year.

The 25 anniversary of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race will be celebrated this year the week following the Daytona 24 Hours race. Please review the article by Jerry Daily on the race and how to volunteer for the largest Porsche race in the world. This is a great event to be involved with the support of a Porsche only sports car race at a very historical track. We are adding two new members to the 48 Hour committee from Gold Coast. Paul Raben will be the Volunteer Co-Chair and Jake Kooser will be the new Timing and Scoring chair. If you have never been to this event, please register as a volunteer and come enjoy the event. For those of you

that have volunteered for past races, thank you and I will see you at the track. Two other upcoming PCA events that will be published in the December issue will be the Rolex 24 Hour race at Daytona and the Werks Reunion at Amelia Island. Many of our members enjoyed the tour of the Larry Willson Collection and the lunch and tour of Orbit Racing. More tours of our popular car collections are planned for next year so check the Kassette and our web site for updates to the calendar for 2018. Larry Wilson Collection / Orbit Racing Shop Tour by Steve Kidd, Zone 12 Representative On Saturday, July 29, a group of about 130 lucky members were treated to a spectacular event were 2 great facilities opened their doors to show off some of the most unique and sought-after Porsches ever made. This is the 2nd year Zone 12 has hosted this event and due to its popularity, I’m sure we will do it again every year. We knew the event would sell out quickly, (in less than 1 week with a 30+ person waiting list) and again we offered a guaranteed slot to those that attended Zonefest….. So if want to be sure you have a spot in 2018, attend Zonefest 2018 at a location still TBA. By all accounts, everyone had a great time, and despite the heavy rain encountered by the 2nd group making their way from the Wilson Collection to Orbit Racing, the event was, according to one observer, run with military precision. This year we divided the participants into 2 groups, each arriving at a different time at the Wilson collection and leaving for Orbit Racing/ lunch at different times. This enabled us to handle a larger group with less waiting at check in points. The 1st stop on the agenda was the Larry Wilson Collection of cars, hidden away in a bunker like location near PBIR. The collection contains a street car section with

many rare and desirable cars, including quite a few Porsches. Another section contains race car of which most are Porsche race cars raced by Larry Wilson himself. All have a personal tale and the race cars are rotated in and out of the collection depending on which one is being raced any given weekend. Another section of the collections contains other unique collectables…boats, vans, motorcycles as well as a library of cool books and memorabilia. The collection employs a staff of paint/ body experts, mechanics and a detailer for when a car is going to a car show. Most of the staff was on hand to answer questions and tell great stories. Additionally, most of the cars are driven on a regular basis, and when something breaks, they put it back together, better than new. After a few hours of experiencing the Larry Wilson collection, the 2 groups made the 10 mile run down to Orbit Racing. Here, the groups experienced more Porsche history as well as some of the rarest cars Porsches ever made. For instance, walking into the shop, guests were greeted by a 935 with significant race history as well as the last of a limited run of Carrera Cup race cars, based on the 964. Most would agree the shop is hospital like clean,

and Orbit staff was on hand to answer questions about the cars and services they perform. Lunch was served and everyone continued to view, ask questions and generally share great cars and company. Another area of the Orbit facility housed cars being stored or offered for sale. Here were several 911R’s and other highly sought after cars…..really impressive. Our thanks again to General Manager Dave Pohly, and his team at the Larry Wilson Collection and Rodger Hawley, owner of Orbit Racing and his team for showcasing some of the nicest Porsches ever made and sponsoring this event. A big thanks also to Dottie Kidd for serving as the event registrar and making sure all the administrative tasks were handled. Stay tuned for the same event next year….same weekend and expect to see some of the same cars, but also other cars that are rotated in as others leave. On a final note, while the majority of attendees were from Gold Coast region, many of the other regions in Zone 12 had members attending as well as members from Texas, South Carolina and New England….Hopefully we’ll be able to add more slots next year……..Cheers, Steve & Dottie

Autocross Update As I write this article, Hurricane Irma gets closer to Goldcoast region, possibly changing the course of future PCA events. Hoping everyone stays safe and can put things back together quickly after the storm passes. We will notify folks of event changes via e-mail blasts should activities need to be re-scheduled. By the time you read this article, we hopefully will have completed the September AutoX and are preparing for Event #6 on October 14th. Additionally, we will be gearing up for our 2nd Zone challenge event at Daytona during the Oktoberfast club race. This is a Zone 12 event and we usually get the best autocrossers from around the Zone competing for bragging rights. Last year was the first year Dottie and I ran this event and we were surprised at how cool the go cart track was for an AutoX. Unlike other go cart tracks, this one is big, not so tight and wide enough to put in some sloloms. Daytona International Speedway is really cool, so plan to spend the weekend and take in some club race action on Friday or Sunday. Upon entering the DIS compound, signs will direct you to the far end (Orange campground area) where the go cart track is located. Hoping to see new comers to this event, as the course is easy to follow and Daytona should be on everyone’s bucket list. We plan to have a special Oktoberfast t-shirt for those that register early. There will be a cap of 80 autocrossers. Classes for Porsches are based on PCR’s for midsize regions. Non Porsche members welcome, and must use X class (Generic non Porsche class) Proposed schedule 9:30-10:45 final check in,tech and course walking 10:45-11:00 driver meeting 11:00 First car out

Sometime around noon...we anticipate a hard break to allow those wanting to experience the track, an opportunity to take the track tour. This is a low speed parade lap(s), with a mandatory contribution to a charity to be determined. This will also give participants an opportunity to get a bite to eat or see the track. We anticipate finishing runs between 3:00-400 Here’s our proposed schedule for the second part of 2017, which is subject to change: Saturday Sept. 16 at the “concrete strip” in Sebring …Registration is open now on club registration… also prior to the AutoX, there will be a autoX mini-school from 9:00-11:00 This will be geared toward 1st timers, limited to 10 students and has a separate registration Saturday October 14th at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Usually one of best attended events…Register early to make sure you secure one of the 75 spots. Sunday November 12th at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Our season finale and annual PCA Ladies go free day (must drive a Porsche and be a PCA member or associate member to go free) Saturday October 28th Zone 12 AutoX Zone challenge in conjunction with the Oktoberfast club race 2017 at Daytona. This will be a zone challenge event run at the Daytona kart track. Registration is open now on club registration….(find by date or key word Oktoberfast….it’s under Zone 12 events) We anticipate trophies for class winners at this event so GCR hotshoes should be there in full force.

News, reminders and 2017 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2017 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • Cheers! Around the Zone .By Steve Kidd, Zone 12 Representative
As some of you know, my position on the PCA National staff requires a lot of hours of volunteering, assisting, visiting and of course paperwork. One of the paperwork requirements is to complete a quarterly report summarizing my activities for the proceeding 3 months. This quarter’s report was very brief so I thought I would share it with my home region. For those that may not know, PCA is divided into 14 geographic Zones. Zone 12, our zone, encompasses 10 PCA regions in Florida, parts of Alabama / Mississippi and Puerto Rico/US Virgin Islands. We have many great regions in our Zone, and Gold Coast is the largest. Gold Coast won the actual membership growth award for 2016 which was presented at the 2017 Porsche Parade. I encourage you to check the Zone 12 website (Z12 won 2nd place in our category for the 2016 National website contest) as most of the regions calendars are linked to the Z12 calendar. Plan on visiting another region to get the flavor of other activities, some of which are major, such as the Daytona Rolex PCA Corral, Werks Reunion at Amelia Island, and Porsche Platz at the 12 hours of Sebring. Speaking of National events ….mark your calendars now for Porsche Parade 2019 which is coming to Boca Raton. Yes the Pink Hotel, will be the host hotel...More on this later. Unlike many other zones, our summer months are the least active (real Florida heat and humidity), while our winter months are the most active. Another major deal breaker was a very active hurricane season that in addition to member property damage caused the cancellation of many events in September, including DE’s, autocrosses and socials .Hardest hit were Gold Coast (Florida keys) region with Hurricane Irma and Puerto Rico region with extensive damage to the Islands electric and water systems from Hurricane Maria. A relief effort is planned for Puerto Rico region in the near future. Some of the activities completed this Quarter include, but are not limited to: Participated in 3 Zone rep conference calls Participated in conference calls for both the Sebring and Daytona Club races Attended the Porsche Parade, worked 4 volunteer shifts and participated in 4 competitive events, hosted a party for the 20 members from zone 12 and participated in 2 days of meetings and PCA National Summer board meeting Made visits to 3 regions Hosted a Zone 12 visit to car museum and later to a Porsche race shop. Conducted a Zone 12 presidents conference call and participated in the PCA national call/meeting in late July. Status calls and e-mails to regions after the Hurricanes passed, seeking to assist where possible. Looking forward to cooler weather and the end of Hurricane season. Respectively submitted Steve Kidd

Tech Corner : Turboil Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
One of my very first Tech Articles was on Engine Oil. Back then I said it was a slippery subject because there are so many varying opinions on viscosity, brand, etc. It’s an important subject, making sure you use the right oil and that your oil and oil filter is changed on a regular basis and much more so nowadays. Why? Because of the newer engines now on the market. If you have a new Boxster, Cayman or Macan the chances are that it’s turbocharged. Porsche, together with every other car manufacturer has been forced to force more air into the new engines because of the new standards and regulations which have been and are being imposed by governmental agencies worldwide. It is expected that by the year 2021 almost 40% of all new vehicles sold in the US will be turbocharged. These new engines are much more complex than their normallyaspirated ancestors and therefore require keen attention to maintenance in order to operate as designed.
First of all we need to know what a turbocharger is, what it does and how it does it. A turbocharger or turbo is a turbine-driven, forced air induction system that increases an internal combustion engine’s power and efficiency by forcing extra air (oxygen) into the combustion chamber. But how does it work? The turbocharger is placed between the engine and the exhaust and takes advantage of the energy that runs out of the tailpipe and puts it to better use. The turbo has two finned wheels (turbines) that spin together on a common shaft. The “hot” wheel captures the power of the exhaust. The “cold” wheel forces more air back into the engine, then the engine management system or ECU adds extra gas to compensate and you now have the power of a larger-displacement, normallyaspirated engine.

While the turbocharger is in theory a simple mechanical device, many of the newer turbos and in particular many of Porsche’s turbos have variable turbine geometry (VTG) to reduce or eliminate boost-lag, making them marvels of modern materials and manufacturing, but costing a pretty penny. A new replacement turbo costs many thousands of dollars without counting labor to replace it. The way to avoid premature turbo failure is to follow Porsche’s motor oil recommendations to the letter. Turbos can be brutally tough on motor oil. While the engine crankshaft averages about 3,000 rpm at highway speeds, the turbo’s shaft can spin at almost 200,000 rpm and can reach temperatures of 1,000º C (1,800º F). Because of this, engine oil in turbocharged engines can run almost twice as hot (400ºF) as those on normally aspirated engines (200º F) so an oil that’s been tested to handle those conditions is a must and changing it and the filter at the recommended time intervals is just as important.
The first thing that causes rapid wear and stress to a turbocharger is starting the car’s engine and driving off. When the engine is started there is a short delay until the oil being pumped from the oil pan reaches the turbo. In that short time span, the turbines are already spinning many times faster than the engine. Since engine oil is the turbo’s only lubricant it is very important that it be delivered quickly and efficiently to keep the bearings in the turbocharger from wearing prematurely. In this critical time it is best to allow the car to idle for a few minutes before driving off for the first time. When the oil temperature is cold it is thick and flows slower through all of the oil passages, lines and filters so it is critically important to allow the oil to come up to operating temperature before the turbo is put to use. The ideal oil temperature for oil to flow and provide proper lubrication is between 180-210º F and on a cold day it can take an engine up to 20 minutes to reach operating temperature so once you have let your car warm up for a few minutes, it’s best to drive it easy for the next 5 minutes. This will give oil the needed time to properly warm up and do its job of lubricating all of the engine’s vital areas and in particular, the turbocharger. Every Porsche leaves the factory with Mobil1 fullsynthetic oil in the engine. According to Porsche: “This fully-synthetic oil has a solid structure with molecular chains of approximately equal length and molecules of a uniform size. This allows optimum pump and flow performance at low temperatures and extreme stability at high temperatures. Mobil 1 has another advantage over conventional engine oils: contaminants, such as paraffin,
sulphur and reactive hydrocarbons are filtered out of the highperformance oils using a complex process. Added to this is increased age resistance, allowing reliable operation at extended oil change intervals”.

48 HOURS AT Celebrating 25th Anniversary
Calling All PCA Volunteers Jerry Daily, Volunteer Co-chair The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2018 race to be held February 1 thru 4 2018. We have several new members on the 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee but most important for us in that Paul Raben has agreed to take over for Jerry Daily as Gold Coast Volunteer Co-Chairman. Jerry will be with Paul every step of this 25th anniversary event, so please give Paul the help and support that you have given Jerry for over 20 years. It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world!

How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 24th annual event was a great success: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 25th edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night vendor showcase party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race,

or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. What can you do to help? At Track Registration We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the driver’s checked in, this is an indoor siting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person. The Grid, we have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are. 1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring. 2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured.
3. Checking the driver to ensure that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secure. 4. Direct traffic at several locations to assist racers to the grid or back to their paddock area after each run.. Timing and Scoring, we need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race. Tech and Scales, we need a volunteers each day to help check the Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales. The Corners, we need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 profession-
al SCCA corner workers. For each corner, we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!! The responsibilities for the corner are: 1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track; 2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident. Notes. At no time would you go over the wall! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect. Pit Marshalls, This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a

5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro. We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are, 1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials. Miscellaneous Positions. We need other volunteers to help with the Friday and Saturday night activities This is where we raise the most money for the charities.
