President’s Corner Ed Kohly - President
This is my final President’s corner as we close out 2016 so does my term as Gold Coast Region’s President. I have enjoyed serving as your President and hopefully I have lived up to your expectations as a club leader. I want to thank all the officers, board of directors, and committee chairs that I have served with for continuing to put on fantastic activities that our members enjoy. I want to thank all the volunteers who have helped over the years during my term; we had a lot of fun. I want to thank all the advertisers and sponsors who contributed when and where it was needed. I want to thank Steve Kidd, Michael Grant, the late Mike Joffee and Lou Gonzalez our past presidents for guiding and mentoring me over the years as I worked my way up as President for our region. I want to thank my wife Beena for being our region’s social chair not only during my term but also throughout the last 8 years; she will be hard act to follow. She has retired from the social committee as well as the board. I want to thank our editor Roger Fabel for his hard work and dedication to produce our incredible monthly newsletter we all know as the Kassette. Thank you to new friends who we have met over the years; it’s been a rewarding experience and blessing to be part of the Gold Coast Region history. I will be continuing my role as Past President and Co-Grid Chair for the PCA Club Race 48 hours at Sebring. I will be passing the torch to Dan Doyle who will serve as President for 2017-18 along with a new group of directors and officers who you all voted for during the recent GCR elections. Porsche Club Gold Coast Region is a vibrant and active region of Porsche Club of America. Our membership has nearly doubled since 2009 when I first got involved with our club to over 2,463 members and we
are currently the largest region of members in PCA Zone-12. Gold Coast Region is the top region in the nation for growth percentage too. I would encourage you to continue to let other Porsche owners that you come across know about our club and invite them to an event or two. As we look forward, our Region is financially stable and viable. We are prepared to run the many and varied events set for 2017 and beyond. The first quarter of 2017 kicks off with a bang with a slew of regional activities including the Rolex 24 hour’s race in Daytona followed by the PCA Club Race 48 hours at Sebring. You wouldn’t want to miss either of them. Heck the weather in Florida is perfect to be outside and enjoy all of the events we have planned for our members. The Club Race 48 Hours attracts professional and amateur drivers from all over the U.S. as well as Canada, South America and Europe. Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions will co-host this great event with hundreds of volunteers from each of our regions. If you have never attended this Club Race you should make it a point to head to Sebring in February and see what the excitement is all about. You will certainly meet new friends and I’m sure you will be back the following year. We will continue to offer safe competitive and non-competitive high per-

formance driving events such as Auto cross (AutoX). The AutoX program will continue to allow our members to learn about their Porsches and drive in competitive events that test the skill and abilities of both drivers and their Porsches. AutoX is a great place to get out and play with your Porsche in a safe environment; it’s a great way to get to learn even more about your car. When it’s time to step it up a notch GCR will continue to host and cohost Driver’s Education (DE) events this year too. DE events will be posted on our website and our region has access to (3) fun tracks. This is where you will have the opportunity to drive your Porsche on a track in a controlled non-competitive environment. These events offer our members the opportunity to drive the dream of no speed limits on local tracks. For those of you who are new at this you’ll have an instructor to guide you through the process of learning about your car and what will make it safely perform at its best. Thank you again Gold Coast Region members for welcoming both Beena and I into this region back in 2009. We will always cherish the camaraderie we all shared with you all over the years and now it’s time to pass the torch. Both Beena and I will continue to be GCR members and wish the new administration best of luck for the upcoming years. Ed Kohly

Editor’s Notes As I begin writing the last article of the year I reflect back over 2016 and it seems like the year just began. It feels like we packed more events into this year compared to previous years. Truth is that I get the same feeling at this time of the season as we wrap up the scheduled events and get ready to roll out our plan for the coming year. All the years have been fun and as our membership continues to grow we are getting more volunteers to help run and grow our increasing amount of events. New members that help with new ideas have raised the bar. This year we took our popular pot luck social and added live music provided by a Grammy Award winning GCR member. Last month , Peter Olliviere who chairs our water cooled classic cars designed an event to bring about 40 of those cars together inside of Porsches

of West Broward. The event was amazing and enjoyed by all. A full article will be in our January issue. We have prepared the 2017 calendar and you will find it in this issue. Please note that when planning one year in advance changes will take place. Check our web site calendar at www.goldcoastregion. org for updates. Oktoberfest done Porsche-style We all like German cars here. And the funny thing is, once you have become a fan of their cars, it’s only natural that you also start to embrace the German culture and their festivities. Oktoberfest is just that – a time for Dr. Porsche fans, like ourselves, to enjoy a glass of authentic Oktoberfest-brewed beer, slice into a bratwurst, and take pleasure in the company of fellow Gold Coast Region members while chatting it up about our cars. And lucky for us, GCR members didn’t have to make a trip all the way to Theresienwiese in Munich to enjoy Oktoberfest this year. Thanks to the work of our club volunteers, we celebrated this very German festival at the Biergarten Restaurant in Boca Raton, FL on Oct. 15th. It was a great success too – the crowds gathered early outside the Biergarten and members pulled in with a train of Porsches – one

after the other. We have to thank Leo Dodier, Donna Dodier, Jake Kooser, and Bob Varela for their exceptional parking and organizational skills in knowing how to stack ‘em and pack ‘em. Our cars eventually filled the parking area in front of the Biergarten and became the center of attention as patrons of other stores nearby came to view our ‘pop-up concours’ in awe. It was quite a sight. New and old members mingled, while beer taps outside in the courtyard provided all the lubrication everyone needed. A large barbeque smoker outside was also preparing authentic German pork dishes for the crowd. And that wasn’t all, the GCR Club and I had arranged a special treat: the newly renovated second-floor of the Biergarten was completely reserved for us. Call it our little GCR Clubhouse for the day.

With the live band and music playing in full swing, we partied like true Germans until the sun went down. The food and atmosphere was fantastic as usual – a special thanks to the Manager of Biergarten, Eric, and his staff Summer, Rachel, Brent, and Ditmar for their wonderful hospitality and attentiveness. Where else are you going to get an authentic Sauerbraten with a side of traditional potato dumplings and red cabbage served by gals dressed in genuine traditional German outfits with a big smile? A big hand also goes out to Foreign Affairs Motorsport for sponsoring this event; and Max Varela, my son, for running the registration booth welcoming all our members. So there you have it! Be sure to come join us again next year, because there is always extra room in our hearts and our garages to embrace everything German, in Porsche-style.

Porsches and Pancakes - Stuart Veteran and honored speaker Billy Grabowski We had a nice group of 20 at the Stuart Diner for our November breakfast meeting. Our special guest was Billy Grabowski. Billy introduced himself and told us that he received this wonderful trophy for all his years as a PCA member and Porsche race car driver. Billy was a winner of many events and volunteered to help others to further their involvement in PCA. Many years ago Billy won a free Drivers Education certificate at the annual GCR awards banquet and he gave it to a newer member that had just won Rookie of the Year. Billy stated he had many years of racing and the new member was just starting . He was charming and shared a few stories and then amazed all of us when he told us he was 97 years old! Kyle Rathbun, Gold Coast treasurer also attended and shared a story about Billy's incredible years of racing Porsches.

Autocross Update
Our last 2 autoX events of 2016 were both held at BBT center and fun by any standard. As usual, the things that make our events great are more runs ( 8 vs the the usual 4 of most clubs), a cap on the number of registrants at @75 so we don’t have exceeding long work shifts and get more runs and of course our willingness to help newcomers and provide excellent instructors. While our October event had less registrants than usual due to competition from another AutoX club running an event the same day, our November event was filled to capacity. Additionally, our November 6th event was our annual PCA ladies go free day and our charity toy drive to support the Kid’s Cancer Foundation in Palm Beach. Check the Kassette for pictures of our PCA ladies and the toys collected. A huge thanks to the autocrossers that brought new unwrapped toys for a group of needy kids. Thanks to Julianna Samper for finding the charity and delivering the toys. As always, check the website for year end class winners as well as the results of each of our 7 autocrosses. The Oktoberfast AutoX is now history, however I can report it was well attended and run as a 2 day event. Competitors could sign up for Saturday only, Sunday only or both days and get a cool Tshirt and be trophy eligible. Rather than a traditional trophy ,winners received commemorative, engraved wine glasses. Gold coast Region had several class winners, including Steve Kidd, Jake Kooser and JC Munez. FTD went to Cory Corona from Suncoast and ladies FTD went to Heather Hammel of Thoroughbred region. There were at least 6 PCA regions represented and several SCCA chapters, making for intense competition. As indicated last month… BB&T will be raising lot rental fees significantly in 2017.We may need to do less events at BBT and raise the price for events at

BB&T. (Also expect a much heftier price if you wait till the last week to register for one of our autocrosses) In the January issue, we hope to provide a spread sheet with the 2016 class winners who received one of our coveted awards. Want to win some of that cool swag??? Come run the 2017 series & win. Here’s our tentative schedule for 2017, which is subject to change: Saturday and maybe Sunday February 4th and 5th 2017 at the “skid pad” in Sebring …Our traditional 48 hours of Sebring Zone Challenge. Registration is planned to open in late November on Club Registration…I expect all the GCR regulars to compete and win against some really good competition. More on this later. Saturday Feb 25th at Sebring ….Most likely the concrete strip. (In Conjunction with the Gold Coast / Suncoast DE that same weekend. Registration will open on Club Registration in early January) Saturday April (date TBA…possibly the 15th or 22nd) at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Sunday May 28th in conjunction with Zonefest 2017 at a site in the Tallahassee area. Hopefully many of the regulars will mark this date on their calendars and participate not only in the AutoX, but also the whole Zonefest weekend. Saturday Sept 16th…We’re back at Sebring for fall opener…Should be similar to the Feb. 25th event Saturday and/or Sunday in October Possibly in conjunction with Everglades Region at Buckingham Airport….If you never ran here you are in for a treat… hands down the best autoX site in Florida. Saturday or Sunday in November… possibly the 4th or 11th most likely our season finale at BBT. This event is our traditional PCA ladies go free day And don’t forget Zone 12 AX Events…We are working on a Zone

Autocross series. Some of the GCR events will be part of the Zone series. Other events will include, but not limited, the 2 day 2017 Oktoberfast AX in Daytona…. most likely the 4th weekend. We anticipate zone trophies for class winners that do 3 of the 5 Zone events......Hope to see more newcomers and regulars at a 2017 GCR or Zone 12 Autocross. News, reminders and 2016/2017 updates: Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2016 and 2017 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. Tech Corner : More Bang for Your Buck Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
If you’re looking for the most bangfor-your-buck in a used Porsche then look no further than the 2004 Boxster (986) or Carrera (996). These two vehicles are prime examples of undervalued platforms, mainly due to one very real issue inherent to the engines in these vehicles: the IMS bearing.
We have written about the issue in some of our previous Tech Articles, but more importantly we’ve also covered the solution which, after installed, makes these engines very reliable and enjoyable. So, let’s get to the nitty-gritty. Why do I say that they are such great buys? The 2004 model year for both, the Boxster and the Carrera share the same engine block design and architecture. It was the last of it’s run, before Porsche introduced the 987/997 engines, so they are the best of their lot with all of the factory improvements to that date. Aside from the IMS issue, these engines have no other real problems, but because of the IMS problem, widely spread via the Internet, these cars have ben dramatically devalued, making them ripe for the picking.

So, the recommendation is find one of these gems by doing some Internet research in your area. You’ll see that with a little patience you will find 2004 Carreras right around $20,000 and Boxsters for $5,000 - $8,000 less. Obviously, the “S” versions will cost a bit more but they also offer more horse power, bigger brakes and some other goodies as well. There’s no big price differential between manual or Tiptronic transmissions, so it’s up to your preference. Obviously, all of the Boxsters will be convertibles and some will be available with the optional hard top. About 60% of the Carreras (in South Florida) are convertibles so you have that option as well. You can find really good examples that have been well taken care of, but have been let go by their previous owners mostly because of fear of the IMS. As you may or may not know, when the IMS bearing fails, the engine is unfixable. With a bit of TLC and an extra $3,000 $4,000 or so you can have an excellent example that will bring you many happy roadmiles which generally become what we call permagrin. And once you take care of the IMS by installing the highly recommended Direct Oil Feed system, the rest is just cosmetic and maintenance. If the leather is a little worn and or scratched, there are products such as LeatherMagic.com or Leatherique.com that allow you to DIY with great results. Then work on the exterior. Bring A Trailer by David Rosenthal You probably know the song “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin Bishop, well that is what happened to me while goofing around on the Bring A Trailer website; yes, I have an un-healthy relationship with inanimate objects (cars). This year I have been trolling on Bring A Trailer (BaT), commenting on Jaguar XKE’s and Porsche 951’s, and then I found the 1987 Porsche 951 I bought, sort of accidentally. http://bringatrailer.com/ listing/1987-porsche-944-turbo-8/ If you are not familiar with BaT, it is an online auction site that has a social component, as once you register as a member, you can not only bid on and/or sell a car, but you can comment on the cars for sale. This format guarantees a car is thoroughly “vetted” as members familiar with the type of car for sale can comment on each car and the seller has the opportunity to respond. Often the seller’s responses determine the final selling price of the car. The other neat feature (unlike ebay) is that the count-down timer resets to two-minutes with each bid occurring during the last 120 seconds of bidding. So a last second bid doesn’t end the auction, it resets the clock to two minutes. This can be very, very dangerous. Another thing to be aware of is any bid you make automatically takes the sales price to your new higher bid (this is different than ebay). I have bid on cars knowing the

eventual selling price would be higher than my bid (I no longer do this due to one particular XKE I almost bought, but luckily someone bid higher). Going into the final minutes of bidding, my maximum bid for this particular 1987 Porsche 951 was $15K, but during the bidding I decided $16K was my new maximum. I fell in love with this car for the rare color (it is not Guards Red), the older Saratoga top, and the one owner family history (and tons of records), as well as the maintenance that was recently performed when the original owner’s son brought the car back to life after the car sat for a few years with his father. The seller’s answers to questions were knowledgable, honest and trustworthy (which turned out to be true). So I ended up the high bidder and won the car. Honestly, I was expecting the car to bid higher, so I was a bit surprised (and happy) I had won the car. Now the fear sets in: is the seller honest in his descriptions or will the car be horrible, I like to drive new purchases home so will it make it (and if not, then what), what will I do with it, can my bank account take the hit, etc. The seller got in touch with me and I quickly planned my flight, travel route, accommodations, and all was set, except my nerves and still wondering why did I buy another 951? Finally Friday came, my ex-wife got up early to take me to the airport, and I flew to Rhode Island. As agreed, the seller picked me up at the airport and drove me to his house

where I finally met the car in person in the seller’s garage. I was so used to the black color of my 951 that I was really stunned and pleased by the deep red (the exact color is still a mystery, the seller says it is Melvin, the option sticker # says Carmine). We went over all the work he had done, I asked a million questions which he patiently answered and then we were off to the bank to notarize the papers and exchange money. This was all going way too smoothly. He had previously dismounted the dry-rotted tires from the original rims (the car has new tires on 17” Boxster rims), so it was a bit of a puzzle to fit the original rims, luggage, two boxes of spare parts, the original metal sunroof, and an under-engine shield in the car in a fashion so as to not ruin the interior. Once all was fitted, I was off into the rain. For my first night I found a “cabin” in a Rhode Island state park and the cabin was really a dumpy garden shed with a roofed porch, but it was also paid for, so it was mine for the night. After checking into the state park, I went out to get fuel and dinner and decided to splurge on dinner at a ocean front restaurant and experienced a little bit of heaven in the form of a “lobster roll”. I highly recommend one and it is officially my new favourite food. Coming back from getting some camping supplies (after losing my credit card somewhere), the car started making horrible noises from the rear end. The seller had told me about replacing parts of the handbrake that had frozen solid and I diagnosed that the handbrake problem were back. I made it to the cabin and discovered I had neighbors in the cabin next door; Three nice college age “kids” and they had a big fire going and offered me burgers and such, but I declined as I was focused on fixing the car. I was able to remove the handbrake lever from inside the car (with the original tool kit and some other tools from my new neighbors) and though I wouldn’t have a hand brake, I hopefully could make it
home. I think they were wondering why someone buying a 30 year old Porsche would be staying in a dumpy cabin during a rain storm, but hey, that’s me. Next morning, I took off early to meet my friend near Hartford, CT for apple picking . On the way, the rain slowed and the car performed flawlessly; no squeeking or groaning from the rear, I was able to enjoy the car, yet always listening for issues that might pop up. Though not as fast as my 1986, I did appreciate the revised gearing as it was much less revvy on the highway. The cruise control worked and though no a/c (broken), the weather was in the 60’s and not humid, so it was comfy. After visiting with my friend, it was westward to the Tappen Zee bridge. Apparently they are replacing the Tappen Zee as the new bridge is under construction next to it. Another 8 hours of driving in sporadic rain and I was in the mountains of West Virginia. Now since I was alone, and not really too good at using my cell phone, I had a difficulty finding my lodge, but more importantly, the pick-up trucks on the curvy, small, 2-lane mountain road in West Virginal drive very fast and my 30-year old car had weak headlights and a driver in it used to flat and straight South Florida roads, so I was driving like a turtle. Once I pulled over to let these folks pass, I found the road actually pretty enjoyable though very scary since I still couldn’t see much. I finally made it to my lodge, checked in, and slept like a baby. The following morning, I was eager to leave as I had a 17 hour trip ahead of me, so I headed out at 8:30 AM. Eating apples for breakfast while driving, I found those same scary roads from last night were now transformed into the most amazing driving experience of my life. I was able to push myself (and maybe the car a little, but I don’t think so) and was saddened to discover I was quickly at the base of the mountain and the fun part of the trip was over. The rest of the trip was under-welming as I had made most of this trip a few times before. The 17 hour journey was a bit slow, as I managed to leave my driver’s license at
the lodge and there was no way I was turning back, so I drove the entire trip at the speed limit so as to not cause trouble. At a gas station, I was getting into the car and happened to look through the windshield and saw the red headlight buckets up and it reminded me of my college Triumph TR7, which I had painted myself Porsche Guards Red. This flashback left me feeling that somehow life comes full circle on this car. Like the TR7, the 951 averaged 27 MPG at about 70 MPH. Since I like to drive a car home to bond with it, I would have to say the trip home was a success as I felt really comfortable with the car and it’s abilities after the trip. The car was pretty much as I imagined it, if not performing better. There are a bunch of little things to do, like reinstall the handbrake and properly adjust it, fix the a/c, replace the front spoiler under-tray, bolt in the intake air-box with OEM parts, replace the windshield washer bottle, etc. but nothing I can’t handle. Bidding on BaT is way too easy and the purchasing process was stressfree, mostly due to a great seller. I always say that you are buying the

previous Owner’s karma with the car, and I have been very fortunate with both of these Porsche’s to have great sellers/ karma. Owning another 951 is a bit of trouble for me (storage, maintenance/ insurance cost, etc.), but I have already learned so much about my current 1986 car through it’s new garage-mate. Since I have slightly performance modified the 1986, I am going to leave the 1987 stock, though temptation is high to modify it, I will resist. Both cars were manufactured in October (though one year apart) and I bought the 1987 exactly 30 years after it was manufactured in 10/1986 (great birthday gift for the car). I am still not sure why I have two 951’s, but I am enjoying them both. I highly recommend bidding at BaT and driving home if you are the daring adventurous type.
