President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President
Hello, everyone!! On May 5th and 6th we had a DE at Sebring with our friends at PBOC. Also on May 5th we had a Stone Crab Drive to the west coast of Florida. We also had an AutoX on May 13 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. All in all it was a pretty busy month for our GCR team. As usual, thanks to you all for all the hard work.
Coming up in June we have several events that should be fun for all. On June 16, Porsche of West Broward tentatively has a Le Mans viewing party scheduled at the dealership. That same day is our Pot Luck Social. On June 23rd is our My Big Fat Greek PCA Lunch. Stay tuned for further details via social media and email! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take
the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. We are half way thru 2018 and it seems like we were just at the 24 Hours Rolex race at Daytona. Time flies but I hope you are enjoying every minute. This month our cover and main article are presented by our award winning photojournalist, Alberto Pugliese. We are lucky to have both world class racing venues so close to our region. If you were unable to attend the 66th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring race this year, I hope you enjoy the article with fantastic photos. If you have never attended the race, treat yourself to a trip to this historical event only a few hours away.

This month we are holding the second annual Classic car event renamed Eurofest with many added features. The event will be held at Heritage Park in Plantation. The annual Tuners RS swap meet and Foreign Affairs tech session will also be held at the event. Don’t miss the opportunity to show your Porsche and join with other Gold Coast members. Check out the flyer on page 29. Next month is Parade time in Osage Beach, MO. If you have never attended a Parade, make this your first. The format is like a Zonefest but for all states.

Porsche Club of America (PCA) Club Racing Driveway to Raceway: Dan Martinson Minnesota native Dan Martinson convinced two buddies to sign up for Skip Barber Racing School at Laguna Seca, and the rest is history! After doing an actual event race at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois, Martinson knew he was hooked. "Our first race was against Shelby Blackstock and Tristan Nunez - how funny is that? Tristan is now a factory driver for Mazda and Shelby in in IndyLights. You never know who you'll end up racing against!"
THE APPEAL Although Skip Barber was fun, I wanted to start looking for some other options closer to home. I had met other Porsche drivers in the Twin Cities at one point or another, and asked them for advice about what kind of car I should start racing in. The Porsche 944 came up and I was directed to a guy named Bob Viau at a local shop called Auto Edge. Bob and I talked length about PCA, its members and how much fun it was to race at tracks around the country. He had a ton of experience building and racing 944s and highly recommended that I consider an S2 for my first race car. After rounding up three cars, I did my first HPDE event at Brainerd International Raceway in 2012. I was hooked after that event for sure! In every case, the best racing moments came when I was able to battle it out with a great driver who I could trust and push to the limits with. I've had this opportunity in every car at one time or another. And, at this point, I've decided that the speed of the car really doesn't matter. It's the door-to-door, bumper-to-bumper racing that makes it fun. That's why I'm racing an old 911 currently!

ADVICE TO NEW DRIVERS Racing is expensive. Even if you have the money to spend, you need to find someone with experience to guide you into the sport - jumping into a $200,000 911 Cup Car is not the way to start your hobby. It's just not fun when you ball up that car at 180 mph! And, its not safe for you or anyone else around you. Start in a ridiculously slow car with really good handling and cheap tires that is reliable and fun to drive in big run groups. E Class 911, SP1 944, Spec Boxster, Spec Cayman are a few I would suggest. Find a coach. Period. Day One. Like any sport, figuring it out on your own is a waste of time and, in this case, it's a waste of money. A good coach will make you a safer driver and help you make good decisions in all kinds of conditions and situations. I can't stress that enough.

Great Ads Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
I’ve been almost as mesmerized by Porsche’s print ads and commercials throughout the years as I’ve been by the cars themselves. Having been involved in advertising in my first career I tend to analyze all ads, but more so those from products and services which I use, such as Porsche. I truly admire the simplicity of the messages, which in turn make the ads very powerful. Throughout the years and the many different advertising campaigns and ad agencies, they have been very consistent.
“Nobody’s perfect” If Porsche would have taken all ten places it wouldn’t be as powerful as this one.
Lets take a look at a few print ads from yesteryear: “Dreaming” This one is so true. Most likely, many of us had a poster with a shinny red Porsche and when we showed it off to our friends we’d say: “One day I’ll have one just like that one”.
“LeMans” Porsche was (and is) extremely proud of its racing history and it’s record-setting wins at LeMans.

“Kills bugs” What more can you say about this ad that slightly modified the punch line of very popular commercial from Raid: “Kills bugs dead!”
“World peace” And finally, one of my all-favorites. It’s absurd but probably very, very true, and that’s why it works.

Autocross Update Autocross event #4 was scheduled back at BB&T and while I can’t give you the results (we need to go to press before May 13), I can tell you to check the GCR website/AutoX tab to see how the competition is progressing for end of the year bragging rights. The April event (#3 at Sebring) combined an Auto x school in the morning and a competition autoX in the afternoon. We typically have a lighter turn out at Sebring which means more runs.....unless rain spoils the day. (the rain did come...but not until the mid afternoon, and everyone got 8 dry runs) This year’s AX school went well with 3 students graduating and receiving their traditional “cone recognition award”. 2018 graduates include Joseph Wexler, Alisia Muniz and Solie Cortinez....This was the 1st year we had more ladies than men in the AutoX school. Hoping to continue to attract more Porsche gals to the AutoX ranks in coming months. For those that have never autocrossed on the concrete strip at Sebring, the surface is grippy and the course is easy to follow....While the drive may be a little longer, we typically start the event later in the day, offer more runs and have shorter work sessions.... all good reasons to make the trip to Sebring. The April 7th event attracted some really good Autocrossers and Suncoast regions top gun, Cory Corona, grabbed FTD in his Cayman S. Ladies FTD went to Gold Coast Region’s Wendy Limroth, also driving a Cayman S. Thanks to everyone who helped out when the rains came....covering up the equipment and securing the tent, and especially Chuck and Wendy for picking up the trash can barrier that the rain and wind took out during the storm. Gold Coast Region (GCR) has one of the most progressive autocross programs within PCA. If you have never seen or tried autocrossing come on out and visit an event. We have some of the best and most patient instructors, as well as loaner helmets for 1st timers. Don’t be afraid if you aren’t quite ready to compete....The focus is on being safe and having fun. We all start somewhere on the learning curve, but the key is to keep doing more events and learning. We provide more runs than most clubs and have a reputation for friendliness, safety and efficiency. Here is a listing of our 3 final events for 2018. Event 5 September 15 (or 9/16 or 9/8) at Sebring on the concrete strip for a fast course on really grippy concrete. I wish more folks would make the trip out to Sebring as this location is similar to an airport site (Buckingham field) and we usually get 10+ runs due to smaller turnouts. Registration should open in July on Clubregistration.net.

Event 6 October 13th a Saturday event at BB&T. This will be our 3rd of 4 events at BB&T and our 1st of the fall events at our home lot. This event is typically one of our best attended and participants are advised to register early as we impose a 75 person cap to assure everyone gets maximum runs. Registration is expected to open in August on clubregistration.net Event 7 November 11 a Sunday event at BB&T. This will be our final event of the year and typically our Porsche Ladies go free day. This event typically determines who the class champs for 2018 will be. As always a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100’s of behind the scene details that make these events possible. News, reminders and 2018 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/ novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954946-3196 • For 2018 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will see no increase in price, however those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events to have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.
