President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President
Thank you for your continued patience as we proceed to work through the challenges brought forward by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article will provide some of the latest information provided by our PCA National office, offering guidelines and requirements on moving to our “new normal”. Our plan is to proceed cautiously and make sure an abundance of safety precautions are utilized. This is especially important in light of the fact that many of our members are older and/or have underlying health concerns. Additionally, MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have the majority of COVID-19 cases and deaths in Florida and the tri-county area continues to be a hot bed for risk. At this writing it appears that social distancing, face masks, sanitizer and now Communicable Disease Waivers/releases (CDW) will be with us for awhile. The PCA National office went thru several versions when drafting the CDW and received a lot of positive and constructive feedback from regions, members, medical and legal experts and others in coming up with the final draft which was released in late May. The most recent version of the CDW was tightened up to reduce redundancy and to clarify some language, and was reduced to 1 page. Please know that the intent of the CDW is to allow PCA to get back to events as quickly as practical in a responsible manner. Here are some of the CDW highlights at this time, but know things are constantly changing and things may alter as needed or appropriate. The CDW will only be required at events that are held in controlled access spaces. This eliminates the complication of managing waivers in a public space such as a parking lot at a coffee shop or at a concours. Controlled access events are moving car events or social events where you have pre-registration and collection of registration fees. To give you a heads up, here is the 1st part on the latest CDW. The
full text of the most recent CDW will be made available on the GCR website and other sources. Participants are asked to read and understand the CDW and be willing to sign, provide your address and mobile # on the CDW before they join an event. These CDW forms will be held by the region Secretary for the requisite time period: “COMMUNICABLE DISEASE EXPOSURE AND INFECTION ASSUMPTION OF RISK, HOLD HARMLESS, RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT APPLIES FOR ALL PCA ACTIVITIES ONE YEAR FROM MAY 26, 2020 THROUGH MAY 26, 2021 As lawful consideration for my being granted access to this facility or event (“FACILITY”), and being permitted to participate in its activities, including but not limited to being allowed to drive, compete, crew, officiate, spectate, observe, work, volunteer, participate in any way or otherwise be granted entrance to FACILITY for any reason (“ACTIVITIES”), and by signing below, I acknowledge that I have read, understand, and agree to the following, on my own behalf, on behalf of any minor accompanying me, and on behalf of my personal representatives, heirs and next of kin, agents and principals: “ Additionally here are the most recent PCA Event Participant Guidelines that must be followed: In all things PCA does, first and foremost is the health and safety of our members, employees, sponsors and communities. Federal, State/Provincial and Local guidelines and restrictions supersede these guidelines where there is conflict or ambiguity. Take Steps to Protect Yourself and Others: • Stay home when you are sick (request
a refund). • Stay home if you have been in contact with someone in the last two weeks who has been sick. • Bring your own personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and disinfectant. • Practice social distancing of at least 6 feet between non-cohabitating attendees. • Wear your face mask when in the presence of others. • Physical contact is discouraged. Refrain from shaking hands, fist-bumps and hugs. • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. • Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue into the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. • Use best judgment and common sense regarding your fellow members’ good health. Region Leadership, including the Event Chair, all have the authority to require you to leave if you cannot comply with these community protection measures. Do you have an idea to do an activity within our new guidelines?...and are you willing to lead this effort? If so give me a call and let’s see what we can do to get your idea off the ground. We welcome input and a willingness to explore new normal content. Stay Safe ….Steve

ummer is here and I hope you are able to get out and enjoy a ride in your Porsche while being safe. The board was hoping we would be able to restart our DE program at Homestead but the track was not ready so the date has been changed to late October. Many of our members have been doing Porsche drives in very small groups and enjoying virtual Porsche meetings on line. We have all had to change our way of life from large club activities to a much smaller format. In September we
Roger Fabel- Editor
are planning outdoor activities with added safety and social distancing. The lock down has not all been negative in the publishing world. Without PCA activities to report on, we are limited to members articles and others items such as the PCA crossword puzzle that was very popular with our members and also external regions. Next month we will add a tech quiz. Thanks to the members that have been sharing their Porsche stories. Please continue to share your “From the members” articles.
This month we are spotlighting a very special Automotive Artist, David Chapple. I first met David at our 48 Hours at Sebring event and was blown away with his creative art. The cover is very special and the story behind the painting will show you how it impacted his career. I hope the articles and podcast interview will be enjoyed by others that may be interested in a career of art. David’s art is very powerful and we will be presenting more in the future.

Porsche Art article by Roger Fabel
ARTWORK by David Chapple
I first met David and his wife Noonie at this year’s 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race event. I found David’s artwork to be many levels above the automotive artwork I had seen in the past and he does not strike you as a business person selling his products but rather an artist sharing his talent and love for automotive fine art. Last year at the 48 Hour charity auction David donated a limited edition print to the Ronald McDonald charity and has offered to do the same next year. After displaying his artwork at Sebring, David traveled to Boca to display his art at the Concourse D’elegance. I asked David to provide more details about his artwork and to share some of his artwork with our members. I hope you enjoy the Porsche Art. David will also be providing future artwork for our newsletter.
Profile Being true to my style while continually developing new ideas it defines my creative journey. My passion is in the details, I love refining my craft. Automotive adrenaline flows through my senses, making the subjects I paint pulse on my canvas. Through my journey, there came a pinnacle; a desire to push myself further. I required more than a twodimensional feeling from my paintings. I was seeking to feel the rush emerge and break through, which in turn has evolved my art into painted sculptures. In my sculptures, I am able to capture the sensual flow and movement that these beautiful subjects possess in an artistic form. The form I created is intended to show the airstream drawn from the movement of the vehicle. The curvature of my sculptures follow the flow of the ride and bring the viewer along. The vibrancy of my color palettes truly bring the experience close as if being right there in the moment. Intense focus on the smooth, perfectly finished output is my ultimate reward. With every incarnation of a new direction of my work, I am invigorated and duly even more inspired. Exhibiting at many Concours D’elegance and fine art events nationally has given me an awareness of the importance of automotive fine art as an integral part of American culture. Graduating from Hope College in 1991, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. As a third year student, I was commissioned to create large paintings that hang in my Alma Mater’s permanent collection today, paving the road to my future with a career painting automobiles as fine art. I have worked my entire life solely as an artist, which has molded me into who I am today. My faith has played a significant role in creating balance in my life as an artist as well as the ability to provide for my beautiful family.

About the cover This is a very important painting in my career. I was living in Dunedin, Florida and I wanted to create a painting that showed my surroundings and what inspired me. I have always been drawn to the Porsches. My inspiration began like many young boys with the dream of someday owning a 911 or 930. I remember going to Giganti Volkswagen in Indianapolis in the mid 80's and seeing Derek Daily's slant nose Porsche sitting out front of the dealership ready for pick up. That experience was impactful. At that time I had only seen slant nose Porsches in magazines or on posters. “Mint was painted 25 years ago. While I was exhibiting at an art show in Florida, I ran into Steve Chapman of DuPont Registry which opened the door for me to create cover art for the magazine in 1996. Once the painting was released as a limited edition, it was picked up by Herrington, The Enthusiasts' Catalog. It was a huge hit. All these years later, I have people tell me they still enjoy their Mint limited edition to this day.

Interview with David Chapple https://carsyeah.com/ourportfolio/1168-david-chapple/ Listed below are highlights from the podcast from Cars Yeah and David Chapple
Mark: David Chapple is an automotive artist who is a painter and sculptor. His career has spanned over 30 years. He describes his painting style as a continual development and refinement that has no limits. He uses a vivid color palette and his goal is to present art with a definite continuity of original concepts that spur momentum and expression in his sculptures and canvas compositions. His art has been featured in numerous prominent magazines and he has received many Concour D’Elegance and fine art awards nationally. David is also a member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society. His art has been displayed at the Pebble Beach Concours, in numerous galleries, commercial settings and in private collections worldwide.
Mark: I’m very happy to say that I’ve met David. I’ve seen his art up-close-andpersonal and is absolutely spectacular. We got to spend a little time together at Rennsport Reunion 6 about a month or so ago down there at Laguna Seca. Today could you fill the audience in more about your career and your very obvious passion for art and automobiles. David: Thanks again Mark for having me on your show, I appreciate it. I have been an artist for over 30 years. My passion started as a young man restoring Volkswagens with my father who is an avid Volkswagen collector. I knew I had a talent at a young age, I would sit in front of the television drawing sports figures and sports cars. My passion was ignited
by my father when he purchased my first car which was a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. The two of us restored it together. I started receiving scholarships and awards for my art as a teenager. So, long story short, 30 years later I am pursuing my passion as an artist and enjoying the journey. I say it’s a journey because being an artist is an interesting life. There are severe highs and lows but being in the car industry it’s a wonderful opportunity. I meet wonderful people and that’s one of the strong benefits of my career.
Mark: Absolutely, you know what I love about your artwork David is it’s very different, very unique and just when I think you’re going down one path with the way you do things you surprise me and you do something else. Check out David’s website www.davidchapple.com. Not only does he paint beautiful wonderful illustrations in paintings of cars but he’s taking his art to a whole other level. He has prints, he does 3D sculptures and you got to just go look at these. For me to try to explain it to you would not do it justice. He creates tables, benches, even thrones I mean there are some really, really cool creative things to date he has created. David I always like to start by asking my guests for a success quote. This is something that has been important to you that perhaps guides you in the way that you create things to do or to get the inspirational tires turning here on cars yeah so David Take The Wheel. David: A slogan I guess I would say “Nothing comes easy, hard work, a strong work ethic and you can achieve anything you want”. Mark: How have you incorporated that concept into becoming a person who can actually make a living doing what you love to do. David: Well when you have the passion to be an artist you have to have vision. Vision is very important because you want to create something different, like my art. I like to see things differently when I come out with a piece of artwork each time I want it to “out do” my last one. There are probably hundreds of paintings that I haven’t created and have in the back of my mind because it’s not the right time or something just isn’t proportionately the way I want to see it . I am hard on myself, I want to come out with art that people look at and say “wow how did you do that?” It’s very challenging being an artist. It has it’s severe ups and downs. Like I said earlier, it’s an interesting career to be in, one minute you can be feasting the next minute it’s famine so it is you have to know how to take the good with the bad. Mark: In your case you’re always coming up with something unique and different I mean that’s what I find about you so compelling. Your work is I should say all over the place because it really isn’t but I look at many of the things you do and I think there’s five different artists.
David: Right, when you find an avenue that you like to go down I say do it. Being unique is key and that’s good and bad because when people haven’t seen something that you’ve created and you go to an event, sure you might have a great response but when you are groundbreaking and coming out with new ideas that people haven’t seen they have to get used to it. Number one: they have to see you more than once. Number two: when someone has seen something before that an artist has done their acclimated to it. When someone hasn’t seen something like my sculptural work that you saw out at Rennsport, when people haven’t seen something like that it takes a moment to digest it, because no one’s done that before. Sure there are sculpture artists out there that have done similar but I actually paint on my sculptural form so it’s almost twice as hard. Mark: I think when the listeners go and look at your artwork on your website they’ll see what we’re talking about because you turn what is typically flat canvas art print whatever that might be into three-dimensional forms. It’s different layers and different surfaces. It moves flat and it goes vertical then it goes in and out back and forth so very very unique things and I like the fact that you’re evolving and pushing yourself all the time that’s how we grow getting uncomfortable. I’ll ask about where that original passion came from in your life growing up with cars having a dad who is into Volkswagens and restoring cars with him what a delight that must have been. Was there a pivotal moment in your life that you knew that you were going to be a car guy just like Dad? David: probably when I was in college painting automobiles. I received a scholarship to go to my alma mater. When I was in my junior year the college commissioned me to paint three 5 by 7 foot paintings for the Student Union. This opened my eyes to a career in art and I could actually really do this. For a young man to be in college and get paid, that was what I needed for my confidence and I was able to take it to that next level. There’s nothing quite like getting a paycheck for doing something that you would have done for free because you love doing it. It’s also a moment of reality. Wait a minute here do you mean I can do what I enjoy the rest of my life and make a living? That’s pretty darn cool I mean amazing.
Mark: I like to ask my guests about a big challenge and a big failure you faced along the way. Now I know being an artist and making a living at it has extreme highs to extreme lows I get that too so let’s take us to one of those low points and walk us through what was going on, what was happening but more importantly what did you learn from that situation so that you could grow out of it and move forward. David: If you want me to go to a dark place and we need to talk about the past, I have to say that the most successful artists in the world I can guarantee you that they’ve hit dark spaces and hard spots in their lives. No one is exempt from difficulties in life that’s something that’s guaranteed to us, it’s how you respond. That’s where my faith in and God comes along. It’s a journey with Him and a journey with my art they go hand-in-hand. I’ve been gifted a wonderful talent by God so I’m a Believer and that has brought me through a lot of dark places in my life. Mark: Thank you for sharing your art with us. Last question. Who is your favorite artist. David: Van Gogh. He was very inspirational in my early career with his color palette in 1800’s. Thank you also for this opportunity.

I
f you think about it - our classics truly are pieces of art, in their own right and within the eyes of the beholder... To maintain and preserve a Porsche in it’s 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th decade of life on the road, requires commitment and a good portion of irrational affection - call it love, if you wish! So here I was last Christmas, unpacking my presents and being completely overwhelmed by this

beautiful stitching piece showing my 1960 356 T5 under a tree in the shape of a heart. It is being showered by the blossoms of this Shower of Gold tree, symbolizing nothing less than all the feelings I have for this precious “Grandmother” of all Porsches! The artist of this unique creation, my loving fiancé Rosario, perfectly captured the emotional aspects of my now 8 year old relationship with my little “Creampuff” with the license plate “1 2 Keep” !

I am sure many of us can relate to the scenery shown in this picture. The Florida sun shining through the clouds and onto the tree and the car underneath, with the leaves falling in the wind as it seems to move along the way into a heart of blossoms on the ground. I Wanted to share this piece with all of us who enjoy the fruits of evolution exemplified in any Porsche until today! Juergen

See It, See It Now by Danielle Badler If you haven’t seen it, please see “Ford v Ferrari.” I just saw it, at my local cineplex. But wait, you say. It’s now gone from your local big screen. No matter. Then it’s sure to have moved to Netflix or some pay per view service, now or any minute now. Go, scan, check your local listings. Seek it out, and watch. Watch … the … film. Why am I so emphatic? Yes, yes, the film’s very entertaining. More on that later. But there’s another matter. And it affects us all – anybody who calls himself or herself an enthusiast. The fact is that we need to support cars and racing. And cars and racing films. If we don’t, who will? Read my lips. And then we need to register our support, by buying that ticket at the multiplex, or giving Nielsen a tick on our home viewing patterns. We need to have it aggregated and duly noted. Why? So that, wherever and whenever another cinematic project involving Castrol and burning rubber and turbos and steering wheels is concerned, there’s an acknowledgement among the suits all seated at the conference table that there is, indeed, an audience out there. Want proof? Ok, do you watch racing on TV? Of course you do. And do you ever get hounded by questions like, “how can you just sit there and watch cars go round and round?” And “what are you doing, waiting for a crash to happen?” Of course you do. We’re a fragile minority. Let me tell you a true story. Many years ago, when “Le Mans” came out, I had a summer job as a gopher at CBS headquarters in Manhattan. My actual job is not important. But what was important is that I would get invitations to private screenings of new films. They came from Cinema Center Films, which was a subsidiary or division or whatever of CBS. And, one day, an invite came to view “Le Mans.” It seems Cinema Center Films was a producer. When the day arrived, I got to the screening room maybe a half hour early, lunch and a drink in tow, in order to get properly situated for the screening. Nobody else was there. In fact, the room
didn’t fill up until maybe 30 seconds before the film began. No matter, I was ready. Of course, I was enthralled. I was taken to a higher place. What an experience, I thought, what a ride. Then the lights came up … and I blinked once or twice … I got adjusted to the light … and realized I was the only soul left in the screening room. Seems everyone else had up and left, sometime during the showing. That’s how fragile our world really is. If we don’t support the entertainment that feeds our enthusiasm, who will? When? Remember, “Le Mans” was a bomb at the box office. And it took years for our favorite subject to recover. Years of Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball goofball nothingness. “Ford v Ferrari” is an opportunity that just doesn’t come along very often. I’ve been trying to chronicle the star-making machinery around the film. Of course there’s the late-night TV talk show appearances by Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the leads. But how about them both on “Today?” Matt on “Ellen DeGeneres?” How about Forbes? Forbes! They ran a story under the headline “Ford vs Ferrari: The Real Story Behind the Most Bitter Rivalry in Auto Racing.” And it’s not bad. How about a profile of the sets? In Architectural Digest? How the production designer created the entrance gates to Ferrari in Maranello? Enzo’s office? The Glass House, Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn? Henry Ford II’s office there? And their coup de gras, a “1,000-foot bunker that once sat at the finish line of Le Mans and was torn down in the 1980s. His team rebuilt the entire three-story structure, with the mechanic pits and hallways behind them, the VIP boxes above, the grandstands above those, along with a full Wide World of Sports TV booth….” I should add, by the way, that they also used real, live audio snippets from the one, the only, Jim McKay. Then there are the reviews, in virtually every daily, weekly and monthly publication and broadcast outlet that reviews films, nationwide. Buttressed by a multi-
million-dollar ad campaign for the film in every major market, coast to coast. And the best, of course, comes from the buff books. Especially Autoweek. Autoweek says see the film … then watch these five films: “Williams,” a documentary on the man and the team. I watched it, and liked it; “Grand Prix,” to which I say, duh; “Le Mans,” which I give a double duh; “Rush,” to which I say, well yes; and “Senna,” to which I say, not a bad list! Autoweek also dug up, from their morgue, interviews with Foyt and Gurney, on their win at Le Mans in 1967. They interviewed the director of “Ford v Ferrari” on “what he left out of his new movie.” And they advise us motorheads not to let our knowledge of the actual events interfere too much with our screening the movie. Because, after all, it’s a movie! About “what is among the greatest stories in racing history.” But wait, there’s more. I just got an on-line offer to “Enter now for a chance to win this 427 Cobra seen in “Ford v Ferrari.” It’s from Superformance. And, geesh, I just took a break from my typing and checked e-mail. What did I find? An item from Autoweek’s racing daily which says “You will never be Christian Bale (or Ken Miles), but you can bid on the GT40 he drove in ‘Ford v Ferrari.’” Interested? Go to the auctions in Kissimmee in January. For real. And the film? The film? Ah, c’mon. Just see it. You were meant to. And bring your friends. They’ll enjoy it too, even if they’re not motorheads. Tell the world about it. Let’s keep that wheel rolling! It’s up to us!
